Canada court overturns Indian origin man’s sexual assault conviction

A court in the Canadian province of British Columbia Friday set aside the conviction of an Indo-Canadian man in a sexual assault case.

The sexual assault conviction had led to the imprisonment and deportation of Gurdev Singh Dhillon, which the Crown later admitted was a “miscarriage of justice”.

However, the British Columbia Court of Appeal considered the DNA evidence that was not disclosed to the defence counsel before the trial and overturned the 2005 conviction of Dhillon for assault and sexual assault, the South Asian Observer reported.

‘Social Justice Bench’ of SC starts hearing PILs

Newly constituted special ‘Social Justice Bench’ of the Supreme Court on Friday had its first hearings and took up matters of Narmada dam project, shelters for homeless persons, welfare of construction workers and exploitation of children in circuses, among others.

The special bench of justices Madan B Lokur and U U Lalit first took up the 2002 plea of Narmada Bachao Aandolan and asked parties, including NBA activist Medha Patkar, to file short synopsis by December 24 as it did not want to waste time going through records running into thousands of pages.

Pakistan police arrest five militants working for al Qaeda

For the first time, Pakistani police have arrested five militants, including a top commander of the newly formed al Qaeda India (AQI) group, which had carried out the deadly terror attack on the country’s strategic naval dockyard here in September.

The militants were arrested by the anti-extremist cell of the CID police on Thursday.

The five were also behind the deadly terrorist attack on the naval dockyard in Kemari last September and were planning another attack on the naval facility when arrested, senior CID police official Umar Khattab told PTI.

Kiev confirms ceasefire takes hold in eastern Ukraine

Ukraine confirmed Friday the cessation of hostilities between its troops and pro-Russian separatists in the eastern part of the country, as a new truce accord reached earlier this week entered into force.

A spokesman for the Ukraine Security Council, Andriy Lysenko, said the ceasefire was taking hold gradually and mutually in the “anti-terrorism operation zone”.

He noted that there had been no heavy artillery attacks by the separatists in the past 24 hours.

The cabbie, identified as Shiv Kumar Yadav, who had allegedly raped a 27-year-old finance company executive in an Uber cab last week, had submitted a fake character certificate from police to Regional Transport Office (RTO) to get an All India Permit for his car.

Workers sacrificing sleep for long hours: Study

A study has suggested that people are exchanging paid work with their sleeping time and a chronic sleep loss can be prevented with flexible working hours.

The study’s results were collected from responses given by 1,24,517 Americans who completed the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) over eight years. Participants’ responses captured 99.1 percent of the past 24 hours.

“The evidence that time spent working was the most prominent sleep thief was overwhelming,” said Mathias Basner, lead author from the University of Pennsylvania, the US.

EU lauds Bangladesh’s progress

The European Union has lauded Bangladesh’s progress at the third Global Social Responsibility conference in Dhaka by saying that Bangladesh is “willfully moving from aid to trade”.

“Bangladesh proudly stands on its own feet, this is thanks to the hard work,” bdnews24.com Friday quoted head of the EU delegation Pierre Mayaudon as saying.

Israeli security agency Shin Bet has said that the three Jewish suspects arrested for setting fire to a Hebrew-Arabic bilingual school in Jerusalem are members of an extremist anti-assimilation group known as Lehava.

According to Shin Bet, the three suspects confessed their actions during questioning on Thursday, Haaretz reported.

Minor girl raped by father, uncle in Indore

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her father and uncle here for over a month, police said today.

Based on the girl’s complaint, the two accused were arrested yesterday, Aerodrome police station in-charge K L Dangi said.

The girl’s father and maternal uncle had allegedly been sexually assaulting her for the last one-and-a-half month, Dangi said quoting a complaint filed yesterday by the victim in this connection.

The girl, a student of class VII, had been living with her father at Kalani Nagar here as her mother had separated from him some years back.

The study at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health is the first to report a link between prenatal exposure to phthalates and IQ in school-age children.

Bill Cosby sued by new accuser for defamation

Comedian Bill Cosby has been hit with a new lawsuit filed by a woman who accused him of drugging and assaulting her in the 1970s. Tamara Green said in the lawsuit filed in federal court in Massachusetts that Cosby, now 77, defamed her “good name and reputation” when he branded her a liar, reported Ace Showbiz.

Tamara, who first came forward with the sexual assault claims against Cosby in 2005, also alleged the comedian, through his lawyers and publicists, negligently ignored the truth and willfully made “an evil opinion of her.”

Astana retains World Tour cycling licence

Controversial cycling team Astana, whose leading rider was this year’s Tour de France winner Vincenzo Nibali, was granted a World Tour licence for the 2015 season by the International Cycling Union (UCI).

However, the UCI said Wednesday that, while the licence had been granted, Astana would have to agree to conditions, including being audited by the Institute of Sport Sciences of the University of Lausanne, who will “determine whether and to what extent the team and or/its management is responsible of the recent events” relating to doping offences, reports Xinhua.

Facebook launches new publishing tools

In a bid to give more teeth to advertisers and those who want to promote posts on Facebook, the social networking site has launched new tools that allow a greater ability to target posts and promote content.

The biggest tool for advertisers is interest targeting that will use Facebook’s data mine to create areas like locations, celebrities and sports teams to add to posts, Mashable reported.

Social managers will also now be able to put end dates for when posts should stop receiving promotion in News Feeds.

AAP fields Lal Bahadur Shastri’s grandson in Delhi

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Wednesday announced its third list of candidates for the upcoming Delhi assembly polls, fielding former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s grandson Adarsh Shastri from Dwarka.

Adarsh Shastri unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha election on an AAP ticket from Allahabad. He was formerly employed with Apple Inc.

With 10 candidates in the third list, the AAP has so far announced 45 candidates for the 70 assembly seats. In the latest list, none of the candidates has been repeated.

139 complaints of fraud NRI marriages received from US: Minister

The US tops the list of eight countries from where complaints or cases of fraudulent NRI marriages are received, with 25 complaints received so far this year, parliament was told Wednesday.

Minister of State in the ministries of Overseas Indian Affairs and External Affairs Gen V.K. Singh (Retd) said in the Lok Sabha that the Indian missions provide assistance to the complainant in the form of financial help for legal procedures, counselling and taking necessary action as per the need and requirement of the case.

Fadnavis govt opposes PIL against Shiv Sena sharing power

The BJP-led Maharashtra Government today opposed a petition in the Bombay High Court challenging the joining of government by erstwhile opposition party Shiv Sena, saying the PIL was not in keeping with the provisions of Constitution.

State Advocate General Sunil Manohar argued that there was no rule which prevented the opposition party from joining the ruling benches.

Maha govt to ban all web-based cab services

In the wake of the alleged rape of a 27-year-old woman by an Uber cab driver in Delhi, the Maharashtra Government has decided to ban web-based taxi services in the state.

“Orders have been issued to the Transport Commissioner to stop all the web-based cab booking services. He will take the required action immediately. Now, it is only a matter of time before the order is implemented by the Commissioner,” Transport Secretary S K Sharma told PTI here today.

The move comes after the state government received Centre’s advice to ban all web-based taxi services, he said.

Sanctions caused Russia, EU to lose tens of billions of dollars

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev Wednesday admitted that Western sanctions have caused Russia lose tens of billions of dollars, while noting that the European Union (EU) has sustained significant losses as well.

“Our economy, probably, has lost tens of billions of dollars,” Medvedev said in a televised interview with journalists from five different channels.

Medvedev said that sanctions imposed by the US and the EU in retaliation for after Crimea acceded to Russia and support for separatist rebels in the eastern Ukraine has hurt both Russia and those who imposed them.
