40 killed in car bombings in Yemen

Two car bomb explosions targeting Shiite Houthi gunmen killed 40 people and left dozens wounded in Yemen’s central province of al-Bayda Tuesday evening, a government official said.

One blast took place near a building held by the Shiite Houthi group and the other one hit an education faculty in Radda town of al-Bayda province, Xinhua quoted the official as saying on condition of anonymity.

“The initial reports indicate that the bombings claimed the lives of 40 people, including more than 20 children,” the source added.

No proposal for new security management body: Minister

There is no proposal to set up any new institution for for effective security management as the National Security Council, headed by the prime minister, is there to deliberate on all aspects of the issue, parliament was told Tuesday.

Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary told the Lok Sabha in a written reply that ministers of home, defence, external affairs and finance were members of NSC and the national security advisor was its secretary.

It was an agonising 17-hour wait for the parents of Puspendu Ghosh, who was trapped by a gunman in the hostage drama at the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in Sydney Monday.

“At around 8.15 a.m. Monday I was told by one of his colleagues that my son was in the cafe when the gunman took hostage those inside. He told me to watch the news on television, and said they were in touch with the police in Sidney,” said Puspendu’s father Pushpal Kumar Ghosh.

Surging gold imports cause for concern: Official

Import of a whopping 150 tonnes of gold in November even before curbs were lifted was a cause for concern as a 38 percent jump in a month resulted in widening of the trade deficit to an 18 month high, a senior official said Tuesday.

“Gold imports of 151.58 tonnes in November is a phenomenal rise of 38 percent from 109.55 tonnes in October and an incredible jump of 571 percent over the same month last year despite import restrictions still in place,” Commerce Secretary Rajeev Kher told reporters here.

141, mostly children, killed in Peshawar school attack

In one of the worst acts of human savagery ever perpetrated, the Pakistani Taliban senselessly slaughtered 141 people, 132 of them children, in a brazen terror attack launched by its heavily armed gunmen and suicide bombers on an army-run school in Pakistan’s Peshawar city in retaliation to the army’s operation against extremists in North Waziristan.

The horrifying attack was carried out by a group of paramilitary uniform-wearing terrorists who stormed the Army Public School complex in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan, Pakistani media said.

Acid attack accused will be arrested soon: Kashmir police

Police in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday said investigation into the Dec 11 acid attack on a woman in Srinagar was in progress and the perpetrators of the heinous attack would soon be behind bars.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) A.G. Mir Tuesday chaired a meeting of senior officers to review the investigation, a police statement said here.

The meeting was also attended by officers of the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Police said they have got several leads and investigators were working round the clock to solve the case as soon as possible.

Norms bent to give liquor suppliers Rs 100 cr benefit: BJP

BJP today accused the JD(U)-led Bihar government of providing Rs 100 crore undue benefit to liquor suppliers by increasing base rates of country liquor in violation of tender conditions.

“The state government has revised the base rate of 200 ml country liquor pouches from Rs 2.66 to 3.04, and of 400 ml pouches from Rs 4.49 to Rs 5.26.

SEBI finds 32 companies running illegal investment schemes

Markets regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has found 32 companies to be operating unauthorised investment schemes in the garb of real-estate business, parliament was told Tuesday.

“During the last three years and current year, SEBI has found that 32 companies were operating CIS (Collective Investment Schemes) under the garb of real estate without obtaining certificate of registration from SEBI as a collective investment management company,” Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

NHRC notice to Andhra Pradesh over assault on labourers

The NHRC has issued notice to the Andhra Pradesh government after some forest officers of the state brutally assaulted labourers from the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu, an official statement said Tuesday.

According to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the victims were extremely poor and were felling trees in a forest situated on the border between the two states in order to earn a livelihood.

ED probing beneficiary of Rs 425 cr IPL facilitation fee

The Enforcement Directorate is investigating the “actual beneficiary” of the Rs 425 crore facilitation fee paid for award of 10-year media rights for the IPL cricket matches to World Sports Group in 2009.

The government, in an Action Taken report to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, said the award of media rights by the BCCI to the World Sports Group and also the allegation of payment of facilitation fee by Multi Screen Media Singapore of Rs 425 crore are being investigated.

Pak slams Parrikar on cross-border terrorism

Pakistan has reacted sharply to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s remarks that India will have to give a strong response to cross-border terrorism emanating from this country, saying there must not be any “miscalculation” about its resolve to thwart any “aggression”.

A week after 11 security personnel were killed in terror attacks in Kashmir, Parrikar said, “I feel that there has to be some strong response which will once and for all or at least reduce these blatant attempts. It’s an open secret that they (militants) came from Pakistan.”

Make tax evasion serious crime for black money info: SIT chief

Tax evasion needs to be made a serious ‘criminal offence’ to force foreign countries to reveal names and account details of Indians stashing illicit wealth abroad, the Special Investigation Team on black money has said.

While adding more teeth to India’s pursuit of black money kept abroad, this would also check generation of unaccounted wealth within the country, the SIT Chairman M B Shah said.

At present, tax evasion is a civil offence in India and it is dealt under the Income Tax Act, 1961 while forex violations are dealt under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

Voters defy strike call in Srinagar, other areas

A separatists’ call for a strike in Srinagar and other districts of Kashmir today failed to evoke response from voters who thronged the polling booths, especially in the summer capital which has had a history of low turn out.

24.55 per cent of over 14.73 lakh electorate in 16 assembly constituencies spread across three districts in the Valley and two constituencies of Samba district in Jammu region exercised their franchise till noon in the fourth phase of polling in Jammu and Kashmir.

Muzaffarnagar riots: Six accused in Kutba killings arrested

Six persons have been arrested in connection with communal killings at Kutba village during Muzaffarnagar riots last year, police said.

The accused were arrested yesterday and have been identified as Deshpal, Chatra, Buresh, Jitender, Guddu and Shoki, police said, adding they had been absconding since last year.

They were produced in court here and sent to judicial custody till December 25, police added.

As polling was underway in Sonawar assembly constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who is contesting from the seat, said his thoughts were with his parents who are undergoing an organ transplant in the UK.

Islamic State group shoots down Iraqi helicopter

Islamic State group militants shot down an Iraqi military helicopter, officials said on Saturday, killing the two pilots onboard and raising fresh concerns about the extremists’ ability to attack aircraft amid ongoing US-led coalition airstrikes.

The attack happened late yesterday in the Shiite holy city of Samarra, about 95 kilometres north of Baghdad. A senior Defense Ministry official told The Associated Press the Sunni militants used a shoulder-fired rocket launcher to shoot down the EC635 helicopter on the outskirts of the city.

More flights cancelled in UK after closure of airspace

Several flights were cancelled at Heathrow Airport for the second consecutive day on Saturday after the London’s airspace was temporarily closed due to a computer failure at country’s national air traffic control centre.

Almost 40 flights have been cancelled at Heathrow today.

While none of the airlines flying to India from the airport reported any major disruptions, it has now emerged that the problem may be repeated because software used to control flights by Britain’s controllers dates back to 1960s.

TCS mulls hiking pay offer for freshers
