Five suffer minor injuries after acid spill in local train in Maharashtra

At least five passengers of a suburban local train suffered minor injuries and experienced breathing problems after acid spilled inside one of the compartments near Thane railway station on Friday, officials said.

The incident took place around 1.30 pm when the CST-Ambernath local train was about to reach the Thane railway station, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Central Railway Alok Badkul said.

Overcome dependence on imported defence technology: Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday said the dependence on imported technology in the defence industry should be overcome.

“The Russian industry should produce different types of weapons. It is necessary to overcome the dependence on import of technology,” Putin said at a meeting at the Russian defence ministry Friday.

“It is important not only to place orders at our enterprises and design bureaus but also to organise production, which will exceed foreign analogues,” he said.

In a scathing criticism of the RBI, covering the tenure of previous two governors, the mid-year economic analysis today said that monetary policy lost its credibility between 2007 and 2013.

“For a long time, the Indian economy had been drifting without a credible monetary anchor. Since late 2013, however, this has been laudably reversed,” said the mid-year economic analysis 2014-15 prepared by Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian.

A Delhi court today fixed January 27 for recording statements of five additional CBI witnesses in the 2G spectrum allocation case in which former Telecom Minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and others are facing trial.

Special CBI Judge O P Saini, who had earlier fixed today for hearing final arguments in the case, posted the matter for recording of statements of these five witnesses, including Enforcement Directorate (ED) Deputy Director Rajeshwar Singh.

Missing DLF-Vadra deal info: BJP flogging ‘non-issue’, says Cong

Congress today termed a “non -issue” the matter of pages missing from government records pertaining to the controversial DLF-Robert Vadra deal and charged that “vested interests” in the BJP leadership were flogging it for “malicious political motives”.

“The onus of safe custody of the file is that of the current BJP government in Haryana,” Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said, adding, “Certain vested interests, including those in BJP leadership, have been flogging this issue for malicious political motives.”

Putin reiterates tough stance against western pressure

Kerala tweaks liquor policy

Bowing to pressure from various quarters, the Kerala government on Thursday decided that from now on Sundays will no longer be dry days and 418 bars that have not opened since the beginning of this fiscal would become beer and wine parlours, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

Chandy told reporters that these changes have been made to ensure that the fundamentals of the liquor policy remain intact as the principled stand of the government is to achieve total prohibition in a phased manner.

18 killed in car bomb attack in Yemen

At least 18 people were killed in a suicide car bombing in Yemen’s western port city of al-Hodayda late Thursday, security sorces said.

An Al Qaeda off-shoot, Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), known locally as Ansar al-Sharia, claimed responsibility for the attack against a training institution run by the Shiite Houthi group, security sources told Xinhua.

The sources said that the explosions happened when the Houthis were gathering at the training institution near al-Hodayda airport in the port city, which was taken over by the Shiite group in September.

Bank official rapes woman on pretext of job for son

A bank official allegedly raped a woman on the pretext of arranging a job for her son, filmed the act and threatened to post it on the internet if she informed the police, police said here on Thursday.

According to a complaint lodged yesterday at the Civil Lines police station, the woman had approached the bank official while he was posted at Ram Nagar in Uttarakhand, police said.

Later the official was transfered to Rampur and he called up the woman and demanded Rs 8 lakh for the job. The woman paid him Rs 6 lakh, but he did nothing about the job, they said.

Disabled swimmer Masudur Rahman Baidya, a double amputee below the knee who conquered the English Channel, on Thursday found an admirer in none other than Indian sporting icon Sachin Tendulkar.

“They are the real heroes and their life is like an inspiration to all of us,” Tendulkar, overwhelmed by Baidya’s achievements, said.

Tendulkar was in the city for a private function.

Tendulkar also inquired about Baidya’s achievement of being the only man with amputated legs to cross the English Channel and Strait of Gibraltar.

1149 hotels, gyms under govt’s radar for evading luxury tax

More than 1100 hotels, banquet halls, gyms, health clubs and spa in the city have come under Delhi government’s radar for allegedly evading luxury tax.

Excise department, which is also in charge of luxury tax collection in Delhi, recently conducted a survey on the numbers of such entities to detect luxury tax leakage and found that there are 1149 unregistered banquet halls, gyms, banquet halls, spa and health clubs operating in the national capital.

LS nod to bill to regularise e-rickshaws

Lok Sabha today passed a bill to regularise e-rickshaws and provide for driving licences for these battery-operated vehicles, mostly plying in Delhi, with government promising to incorporate members’ suggestions in rules to be framed once it becomes a law.

“This is an amendment bill. If we pass the bill, I will incorporate rules and regulations suggested by you,” Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari told opposition MPs who demanded that the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill, 2014 be sent to standing committee for a closer scrutiny.

Decision on raw sugar export incentives soon: official

The government will take a decision soon on extending incentives for raw sugar exports, an official said Thursday.

“We will soon consider export incentive for raw sugar,” Food Secretary Sudhir Kumar told a meeting of mill owners here organised by the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA).

The government gave financial incentives of up to Rs.3,371 a tonne for raw sugar exports in the 2013-14 sugar season ended September.

Iraqi premier drops lawsuits against journalists

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi Thursday ordered the withdrawal of all pending government lawsuits against journalists and media outlets that were filed by his predecessor, Nouri al-Maliki.

A statement released by Abadi’s office said the decision not to proceed with the legal action is an indication of the new prime minister’s “keenness to ensure freedom of expression… and his desire that the media have a big role in building the country.”

He urged all media outlets to behave “responsibly” and help in the building of state institutions.

CBI searches BSNL general manager’s house, offices

The CBI Thursday searched the residence and offices of BSNL general manager A.K. Gupta, who was allegedly running three companies without taking permission from the government.

The searches were conducted at two locations in Noida in Uttar Pradesh and one at Hauz Khas in Delhi.

The companies were allegedly being operated by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) official and his wife.

Woman judge’s sexual harassment: SC quashes probe panel

The Supreme Court Thursday quashed a two-judge panel set up by Madhya Pradesh chief justice to probe allegations of sexual harassment levelled by a woman district judge against a high court judge. The woman judge later resigned.

A bench of Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and Justice Arun Mishra quashed the panel, saying the state chief justice constituted it improperly as it was in violation of in-house procedures put in place by the Supreme Court to probe allegations of misconduct against sitting judges of the high courts.

Sonia Gandhi hospitalised, stable

Congress president Sonia Gandhi was Thursday admitted to the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here for an infection in the lower respiratory tract. Her condition was stable, a hospital official said.

“Sonia Gandhi was today (Thursday) admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital around 5 p.m. She has an infection in the lower respiratory tract. Her condition is stable and she is under observation,” hospital spokesperson Ajoy Sehgal told IANS.

The Congress president was admitted under the care of Arup Kumar Basu, senior consultant in the chest medicine department.
