Ex-Army chief VK Singh blamed for Mumbai’s Adarsh housing row

Members of scam-hit Adarsh Housing Society on Saturday accused former Army chief VK Singh of being responsible for the controversy surrounding the highrise that stirred a political storm in Maharashtra and claimed there was no illegality in construction of the building here.

Addressing a press conference here, they claimed the prime land in Colaba on which the highrise was built does not belong to Defence Ministry, as alleged, but to the state government, and demanded the structure be regularised.

New health policy: All stakeholders to be involved on, says Nadda

Government will involve all stakeholders, including doctors, before bringing in the new health policy, for which exhaustive consultations are underway, Health Minister JP Nadda said on Saturday.

Addressing doctors at a function at the BJP headquarters here, Nadda said government is committed to bringing early a new health policy while fulfilling the promise made in the party’s manifesto.

Government targets two trillion units electricity output by 2020

The government has set a target of doubling electricity generation from 1 trillion units to 2 trillion units, Power Minister Piyush Goyal said Saturday, a day after the government tabled in the Lok Sabha amendments to the Electricity Act, 2003, initiating the second phase of reforms in the power sector.

“The government is aiming at 2 trillion units of electricity generation by 2020,” Goyal told the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s (Ficci) annual general meeting here.

AIIMS to provide shelter to patients, relatives in winter

With the slump in the temperature and cold winds sweeping across the national capital, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has geared up to provide night shelters to the patients and their relatives who fail to get a bed and have to camp outside the premiere institution.

Keeping in mind the increasing number of patients turning up for treatment, the hospital has started a new 40-bed night shelter outside its dental centre.

AIIMS already has a 160-bed night shelter located on the campus of the trauma centre being run jointly with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Cold conditions persist in Delhi

Cold conditions prevailed in the national capital on Saturday with the maximum temperature settling at five notches below the season’s average at 17.5 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature was recorded a notch below the normal at 7.2 degrees Celsius.

Moderate foggy conditions were witnessed early in the mornings in several parts of the city causing visibility to drop but the situation improved as the day progressed.

The MeT department has predicted overcast conditions for tomorrow.

UN in talks with Afghan Taliban to reduce civilian casualties

The United Nations has been talking to the Afghan Taliban on measures to limit the impact of the conflict on civilians, as it recorded the highest ever number of civilians killed and injured in Afghanistan in 2014.

UN’s top official in Afghanistan Nicholas Haysom told reporters here yesterday that the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is continuing discussions with all parties, including the Taliban, to strengthen mitigating measures to limit the impact of the conflict on civilians.

Gold recovers on fresh demand; silver remains weak

Gold prices recovered by Rs 85 to Rs 27,310 per ten grams at the bullion market in the national capital on emergence of buying by jewellers and retailers at prevailing levels even as the precious metal weakened overseas.

However, silver remained under pressure on sluggish demand from consuming industries and fell by Rs 460 to Rs 36,140 per kg. Traders said emergence of buying by jewellers and retailers at current levels mainly supported the upside in gold prices but a weak trend in gold in global market limited the gains.

Arrest warrant issued against Pakistan Taliban chief

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Pakistan Saturday issued non-bailable arrest warrants against Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Mullah Fazlullah, spokesman Shahidullah Shahid and nine others for storming the Karachi airport in June 2014, Dawn online reported.

At least 30 people, including all 10 attackers, were killed after an all-night gunfight with militants who besieged Karachi airport’s old terminal.

China eases market access for foreign banks

China has eased rules which will provide market access for foreign banks, in a move to further open up the domestic banking sector.

The Chinese cabinet published the amended rules today which will no longer require a specific amount of operating funds to be transferred from the parent foreign bank to its newly-established Chinese branch. Previously, a foreign bank would have to unconditionally allocate at least 100 million yuan (around USD 16.4 million) or the same value in other freely-convertible currencies.

Minor girl gangraped in Chhattisgarh while going to school

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped by three youths, including son of a sarpanch of her village, in Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh, police said today.

“The incident occurred near Mauhadih village on December 17 when the class 8 student was heading towards her school, situated in nearby Gaud village on a bicycle,” ASP Vijay Agrawal told PTI.

The trio, who were apparently lying in wait, waylaid the girl and allegedly raped her at a secluded place by taking turns, he said, adding they also threatened to kill her if she divulged the matter.

Man gets ten-year RI for raping minor girl

A man has been handed down 10- year rigorous imprisonment (RI) by a local court, which found him guilty of raping a minor girl last year.

Nana Tanwar (25) was convicted by a Fast-Track Court, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Savita Singh, yesterday. The court examined eight witnesses in the course of the trial, Additional Public Prosecutor Ravindra Desai told reporters.

India conveyed to Bangladesh that it is willing to work on mutually beneficial projects during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Bangladesh President M. Abdul Hamid here Friday.

12 Talibans killed by Pak forces in Karachi, Balochistan

Two Taliban commanders were among 12 militants, including foreigners, shot dead by Pakistani forces on Friday in Karachi and Ziarat district of troubled neighbouring province of Balochistan, officials said.

Para-military Rangers carried out an early morning raid in Musharraf colony near the beach area of Hawksbye in Karachi and killed four Taliban militants including local commander Abid Muchar.

A spokesman for the Rangers said the raid was carried out on a tip off that militants had set up a safe house in the colony and were planning terrorist acts.

FIFA will not reopen 2018 and 2022 World Cup votes

FIFA will not reopen the vote for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and will publish at least some of the confidential report into the bidding process, President Sepp Blatter said today.

The 78-year-old Blatter, who is seeking a fifth term as president, said there are “no legal grounds to revoke the executive committee’s decision (in 2010) on the award of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.”

Naidu asks Reliance to launch 4G services from April

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu Friday asked Reliance to roll out 4G services in the state by April next year.

He announced that the 4G services will be rolled out in three phases. The first phase will cover all municipalities. He asked the company to ensure that the services begin by April 1, 2015.

The chief minister also directed the officials to grant permission to Reliance to upgrade its 502 cellphone towers to 4G.
