Researchers have recently developed a map of water vapor distribution in Mars’ atmosphere, it has been reported.

Research from Russian scientists from the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), together with their French and American colleagues, included observations of seasonal variations in atmospheric concentrations using data collected over ten years by the Russian-French SPICAM spectrometer aboard the Mars Express orbiter.

Martian rock reveals new clues about Earth’s history

A new analysis of a Martian rock has revealed a record of our planet’s climate billions of years ago when water likely washed across its surface and any life that ever formed there might have emerged.

“Minerals within the meteorite hold a snapshot of the planet’s ancient chemistry of interactions between water and atmosphere,” said Robina Shaheen, project scientist at the University of California.

The meteorite, which fell on Earth 13,000 years ago, was plucked by hunters from an Antarctic ice-field 30 years ago.

Astronomers have recently spotted a new neighbor for Milky Way galaxy, a tiny and isolated dwarf galaxy almost 7 million light years away

The team, led by Prof Igor Karachentsev of the Special Astrophysical Observatory in Karachai-Cherkessia, Russia, found the new galaxy, named KKs3 , using the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) in August 2014. Kks3 was located in the southern sky in the direction of the constellation of Hydrus and its stars have only one ten-thousandth of the mass of the Milky Way.

Schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to be named after Peshawar attack victims: CM

State-run educational institutions in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would be named after children killed in the Taliban’s deadly assault on an army-run school in Peshawar last week, the provincial government has said.

“The government schools and colleges will be named after the deceased schoolchildren in the areas they belong to,” said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak.

Khattak announced the decision during an event at the provincial assembly yesterday to mourn the victims of the December 16 attak on Army Public School by Taliban militants.

Five Pakistani terrorists were on Wednesday sentenced to death by the high court here for attacking an army camp as the government continued to move ahead swiftly with executions of convicted militants in the aftermath of the grisly Peshawar school attack.

Justice Arshad Mahmood Tabassum of the Rawalpindi bench of Lahore High Court admitted the plea of the government and vacated the stay against the execution of the death-row prisoners involved in the attack on an army camp near River Chenab in Jehlum district and on the ISI office in Multan district of Punjab.

Girl raped as she goes out to relieve herself in Vizag

A 19-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth under the Kothakota police station limits in the Visakhapatnam district, police said.

The incident took place yesterday evening when the girl had gone out to answer nature’s call.

Her family members lodged a police complaint against A Rajasekhar (22), the accused, today.

The girl, native of Ravikamatham, was visiting her relatives’ house. Rajasekhar alleged dragged her to a sugarcane field seeing her alone and raped her, according to the complaint.

Hearing her cries for help, some locals rushed to the spot when the accused fled.

Kurdish rebels threaten renewed violence in Turkey

A Kurdish rebel commander has warned that fighting in Turkey’s southeast could resume by June if efforts to end a 30-year insurgency make no progress by then, news reports said on Wednesday.

Five militants killed, 78 arrested in army raids in Egypt

Egyptian army has killed five militants and arrested 78 others in raids during the last three days in the restive North Sinai governorate, an official on Wednesday said.

Army spokesperson Mohamed Samir said the raids were part of a campaign launched by the military against terrorists in the governorate.

Samir said the militants were killed and arrested between December 21 and 23.

The spokesperson said during the campaign 37 unlicensed motorcycles and vehicles used in terror attacks against army and police personnel were destroyed.

Australian man charged over terror plot

An Australian man was charged on Wednesday in a counter terrorism operation after being found with documents indicating a possible terrorist attack against government targets in Sydney, in the aftermath of a deadly cafe siege in the country’s largest city.

According to media reports here, police said that 20-year-old Sulayman Khalid was charged after he was allegedly found possessing documents designed to facilitate a terrorist attack against potential government targets in Sydney.

BJP’s new membership swells to over 16 lakh in Maharashtra: Bhandari

BJP on Wednesday said it has enrolled more than 16 lakh members in Maharashtra in a period of over a month since it launched a special drive for the purpose.

The initiative, started on November 19, will continue till March 31 next year.

The panchayat in the RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s native village in Bihar’s Gopalganj district has barred girls from using mobile phones and wearing jeans and T-shirts, an official said Wednesday.

A diktat was issued by Phulwaria panchayat that banned girls from wearing jeans and T-shirts, and also imposed a ban on keeping mobile phones.

“It was decided at the panchayat meeting…attended by Mukhiya Savitri Devi and Block Development Committee member Vidyavati Devi,” district official said.
