Saudi Arabia limits family visit visa to six months

The passport department of Saudi Arabia has announced a new regulation that limits the family visitor visas to six months, an official spokesperson said.

The period would start once a visitor arrives in the country and registers on the passport department’s computerised system, Arab News reported citing Lt. Col. Ahmed bin Fahad Al-Luhaidan.

He said the department recently launched a family visa extension service where citizens or residents can extend the visa electronically.

Army to intensify operations in Assam

Army chief Gen. Dalbir Singh Friday said operations will be intensified in violence-hit Assam where Bodo militants massacred dozens of tribals two days before Christmas.

Talking to media after meeting Home Minister Rajnath Singh, he said 66 army columns have been deployed in Assam for counter-insurgency operations.

“We are going to intensify our operations in Assam. I can’t give out any more information,” the army chief told reporters after the meeting.

“The meeting was to review the security situation in Assam,” he said.

P5+1 will be responsible for problems in n-talks: Iran cleric

The P5+1 group of world powers should be held accountable if negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme hit a snag, a senior Iranian cleric said Friday.

“Our foreign minister’s recent letter to the foreign ministers of the world showed that we will never give up our rights, and that the P5+1 would be responsible for any problems that might occur in the nuclear talks,” Ayatollah Mohammed Emami Kashani said during during his address to worshippers at weekly Friday prayers in Tehran, Press TV reported.

SpiceJet scrip zooms 11 percent on back of revival plan

The scrip of cash-strapped budget carrier SpiceJet zoomed up by 11 percent Friday as the airline’s management submitted a new revival plan to the civil aviation ministry, including the infusion of Rs.300 crore.

The company’s scrip at the Bombay Stock Exchange rose to 11.04 percent at Rs.19.60 per equity share from its previous close of Rs.17.65. The stock closed lower at the end of the day’s trade at Rs.19.25, up 9.07 percent or 1.60 point.

Sushma Swaraj to visit South Korea

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will be in Seoul this weekend for a Joint Commission meeting between India and South Korea.

During her two-day visit from Dec 28, the minister will invite Korean industrialists to invest in India to bridge the country’s trade deficit.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said: “Sushma Swaraj’s visit will intensify our exchanges with an important country, which we consider crucial in our East Asian Policy.”

All states in favour of early GST roll-out: Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Friday said that his counterparts in all states favour an early roll-out of the goods and services (GST) bill.

Speaking after the pre-budget meeting with the state finance ministers, Jaitley pointed out that they were in favour of an early roll-out of GST.

The government plans to roll-out GST by April 1, 2016.

Last week the government had tabled the GST Bill in the Lok Sabha. According to the government, it is the single most important tax reform since 1947.

Special police arrangements for New Year’s Eve in Gurgaon

Haryana Police have made special security arrangements for New Year’s Eve celebrations to check incidents of hooliganism in Gurgaon, police said Friday.

Vehicles on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road (MG Road) will not be allowed to move after 6 p.m. Dec 31, police said.

“Vehicles heading toward bars and malls in the city will not be allowed beyond IFFCO Chowk. Special parking for such vehicles will be made available in Leisure Valley Park in sector 29,” a senior police officer told IANS.

Himachal to set up AIIMS in Bilaspur

The Himachal government Friday decided to allocate land for setting up the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Bilaspur district, the home constituency of Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda.

The cabinet, presided over by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, decided to set up AIIMS in Bilaspur as it was located in the proximity of five districts — Solan, Mandi, Hamirpur, Una and Shimla, an official statement said.

It also decided to bring the PTA (grant-in-aid) teachers on contract after completion of seven years of continuous service. Earlier, it was eight years.

Israeli troops shoot at two Palestinians at Gaza fence

The Israeli army said it shot at two Palestinians Friday who approached the Gaza-Israel security fence, slightly wounding one of them.

According to a military announcement, one of the Palestinians ignored calls by the troops to stop and climbed over the fence. He was shot in his leg and taken into military custody while the other turned back to Gaza, Xinhua reported citing the announcement.

On Wednesday, Israel struck Hamas bases in southern Gaza, killing a Hamas militant after a Palestinian sniper seriously injured an Israeli soldier.

Tsunami was like an island sinking: IAF officer

Ten years after the tsunami which killed thousands, memories remain fresh for an Indian Air Force (IAF) officer then posted at Car Nicobar island.

He says the incident felt as if the island was sinking.

Air Commodore B.S.Krishna Kumar was posted at the Air Force Base at Car Nicobar, which is situated at northernmost point of the island chain.

NC offers support to PDP, says Omar

Outgoing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Friday that his National Conference had offered support to the PDP for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir but not given any written commitment.

“Looks like PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) is playing mind games with the BJP (by) leaking about a letter of (National Conference) support that doesn’t exist,” Abdullah tweeted. “Only a verbal offer conveyed.”

Rallies banned, security tightened in Bangladesh

Security has been tightened in Gazipur on the outskirts of Bangladesh capital Dhaka since Friday morning to prevent any untoward incident following the opposition’s decision to hold a pre-scheduled rally defying a police ban.

The local administration has imposed a ban on political rallies in Gazipur district from Friday in the wake of growing tension after the ruling and opposition parties’ announcement of holding rallies at the same venue Saturday, Xinhua reported.

Tibetan parliament-in-exile congratulates Vajpayee, Malviya’s son

The Tibetan parliament-in-exile Friday congratulated former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on being awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, along with late freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malviya.

Malviya’s son was also sent a congratulatory message.

“The parliament-in-exile, on behalf of all the Tibetans, expresses our heartfelt congratulations to you (Vajpayee) on being awarded India’s highest civilian award,” the Tibetan parliament said.

Four killed in Somalia terrorist attack

Three African Union (AU) soldiers and one civilian contractor were killed Thursday when terrorists attacked the base of the AU peacekeeping force known as AMISOM in Mogadishu, an AMISOM statement confirmed Friday.

Terrorists dressed in Somali National Army (SNA) uniforms broke though the base camp around lunch time and tried to gain access to critical infrastructure, during which five of them were killed and three others were captured.

Two more terrorists to be hanged in Pakistan

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Pakistan Friday set Jan 14 as the date for the execution of two terrorists in district jail Faisalabad, The Nation reported.

The Faisalabad jail superintendent submitted an application before ATC Lahore, that terrorist Faiz Ahmad had killed Lance Naik Tariq Mehmood in 2000 at Nankana Sahib and Muhammad Sharif was involved in several terror related incidents at Nankana Sahib.

The ATC rejected the appeals filed by the terrorists against their death sentences.

Four crushed to death under rice sacks in Delhi

Four labourers were buried alive under stacks of rice sacks which fell on them while they were sleeping inside a godown in the capital, police said Friday.

The incident occurred Thursday night in west Delhi’s Alipur area and came to light Friday morning when some other labourers found their associates dead under the weight of the sacks.

All the victims – identified as Pawan, 37, Santosh, 24, Lal Toon, 23, and Manoj, 22 – were rushed to a nearby hospital but doctors declared them dead.

ED questions Punjab minister for four hours

Punjab’s powerful Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials Friday for over four hours with regard to money-laundering links in a multi-million-rupee international synthetic drugs racket busted last year.

Majithia, who is the younger brother of union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, faces allegations of having links with certain non-resident Indians (NRIs) who have been accused of international money laundering related to the massive drugs racket.

Kerala seeks Centre’s support to tackle sea erosion

The Kerala government has urged the Centre to make suitable amendments to rules to bring sea erosion under disaster management, a state minister said Friday.

After a commemorative meeting held near Kollam on the 10th anniversary of the 2004 tsunami, Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash told IANS that the state government had made a request for a change in rules to bring sea erosion under disaster management.

The meeting was organised by Alappatu panchayat in Kollam district.

Tsunami warning system: India to do 3D mapping of coast

India is taking up 3D mapping of coastal areas as part of its efforts to further improve the tsunami early warning system.

On the 10th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami Friday, Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan said under the pilot project 3D Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping of Cuddalore and Nagapattinam (both in Tamil Nadu) was being taken up.

Swine flu claims woman’s life in Delhi

A 51-year-old woman succumbed to swine flu in the national capital, hospital sources said Friday.

The woman passed away two days ago at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, the sources told IANS.

She was shifted to the Delhi hospital Dec 21 after being diagnosed with the deadly virus in a Ghaziabad hospital in Uttar Pradesh.

“The patient at the time of admission was in a critical state. She had lung failure and was on a high frequency ventilator support,” said a statement from the hospital.

Sensex closes flat; FMCG stocks fall

A day after it resumed trading, a benchmark index of the Indian equities markets closed Friday’s session with marginal gains — up 33.17 points or 0.12 percent.

Heavy selling pressure was observed in fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), consumer durables and automobile sectors, while healthy gains were made by information technology (IT), metal and capital goods scrip.

BJP protests fuel price hike in Odisha

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday staged demonstrations in Odisha against the hike in petrol and diesel prices in the state.

Party leaders demanded immediate rollback of the hike imposed by the Odisha government, which increased value added tax (VAT) on the two petroleum products.

“The state government, which had earlier blamed the Centre for raising the fuel price, has raised the price. We demand immediate withdrawal of VAT from petrol and diesel,” told the BJP’s state unit president K.V. Singhdeo to media persons.

However, the government justified the move.

Woman sells 3-month-old baby girl; four held in Andhra Pradesh

Two couples were arrested in connection with the alleged selling of a baby girl in Chilkalguda area here, police said on Thursday.

Shalini, mother of the three-month-old girl, had allegedly sold her daughter for Rs 15,000 to Bhavani, who is childless, after the infant’s birth on October 7. Shalini later demanded more money from Bhavani, they said.

“When Bhavani refused to pay additional amount, Shalini approached the police on December 22 and lodged a complaint stating that her daughter had been kidnapped,” Chilkalguda Police Station Inspector K Srinivasulu told PTI.
