Sushma meets South Korean president, invites ‘bold investments’

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj Monday called on South Korean President Park Geun-hye and invited “bold investments” to benefit from the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ programme.

Official sources said that during the discussions, Sushma Swaraj invited Korean companies to build on their success in India.

She said the Make in India programme was aimed at providing necessary policy and other incentives to encourage manufacturing in India.

NIA probe can be ordered in Bengaluru blast: Rajnath Singh

In the wake of the low intensity blast in Bengaluru, Home Minister Rajnath Singh Monday said if required the case could be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Rajnath Singh said that the central government is waiting for details about the incident from the state government.

“Intelligence agencies are working on this case. If required, the case could be handed over to the NIA,” he said.

A woman died and three persons were injured in the blast near a restaurant in Bengaluru Sunday.

Coast guard, navy to lease AAI land for surveillance units

The government Monday approved leasing of land owned by the state-run Airports Authority of India (AAI) to the coast guard and navy for establishing surveillance facilities.

The cabinet which met here said that owing to the illegal activities along the coast line, surveillance facilities are being developed by the coast guard which require land at various locations.

According to a statement issued by the cabinet, four locations where identified for lease transfer of land to the coast guard and one facility was cited where the land will be leased to the navy.

Israeli troops kill Palestinian teenager in West Bank

Israeli troops Monday shot dead a Palestinian teenager in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus, witnesses said.

Israeli soldiers at Za’tara roadblock, south of Nablus, opened fire on a group of Palestinian teenagers, killing the 16-year-old boy, Xinhua reported citing the witnesses.

Israeli Radio quoted the army as saying that a group of Palestinian teenagers were throwing stones at the roadblock when the soldiers opened fire.

The army added that one of the boys was injured and died later.

The boy’s identity is unknown and his body is still in the hands of the Israeli army.

Cabinet nod to making IFCI government firm with fund infusion

The union cabinet Monday approved infusion of Rs.60 crore in Industrial Finance Corporation of India (IFCI) Ltd. to make it a government company by way of acquisition of preference shares from existing share holders, an official statement said.

“The union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today approved the infusion of RS. 60 crore in Industrial Finance Corporation of India (IFCI) Ltd. to make it a government company by way of acquisition of preference shares from existing share holder(s),” it said.

Viom Networks plans African expansion; plans to raise Rs.1,500 crore

Telecommunications infrastructure major Viom Networks, an over Rs.20,000 crore company, is considering expanding its overseas footprint by entering Africa to provide consultancy and managed services, a top official said.

“We are evaluating Nigeria and Kenya in Africa. We would like to look internationally, said company vice chairman and managing director Sunil Kanoria.

The telecom infrastructure company is keen to focus on its overseas business but is not considering overseas investment.

Cabinet likely to discuss Land Acquisition Act today

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA Government is reportedly scheduled to clear a proposal to take the ordinance route to amend the Land Acquisition Act on Monday. The Land Act, 2013, which came into force on January 1 this year, specifically says that 13 laws — seen as anti-industry — have to be amended within a year or they would come under the purview of the act. The Centre had earlier failed to pass the amendments in the winter session. The Union Cabinet is reportedly meeting from 3 p.m. today.

`International community should pressurise Pakistan to arrest Dawood Ibrahim`

Security expert Qamar Agha on Saturday urged the international community to mount pressure on Pakistan to arrest Dawood Ibrahim and hand him over to India.

“It is high time that Pakistan arrests him and hands over to India. There is a need for the international community to mount pressure on Pakistan to arrest him,” Agha told a news agency here.

Earlier this week, a western intelligence agency had revealed that it had taped a conversation between Dawood and a real estate agent of Dubai, which proves that the underworld don is based in Karachi.

Floods, landslides kill 17, maroon 1 million in Sri Lanka

Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Sri Lanka have killed at least 17 people and marooned nearly a million in the past four days, officials said on Saturday.

Lal Sarath Kumara, a top disaster management official, said 980,095 people from over 270,000 families are affected in 17 districts in the country.

“There were 17 deaths with 15 more disappearances. Twelve more are wounded”, Kumara said.

Of the 17 deaths, nine died due to landslides at worst-hit Rilpola in the central Badulla district.

Draft amendments for trial of militants presented to Sharif

24 prisoners shifted from Pak’s Quetta in fear of jail break

Twenty four high-profile death row prisoners have been shifted from a jail in Quetta to another prison in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province, fearing a possible jail break.

The decision to shift the high-profile prisoners from District Jail Quetta to Central Jail Mach was made at a meeting held at the Home and Tribal Affairs Department of Balochistan.

Senior officers from Home and Prison departments participated in the meeting, which discussed possible attacks on prisons in the province.

Two suicide bombers killed in Pak operation

One suicide bomber was killed while another blew himself up on Saturday during a security forces’ operation in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan’s province.

Security forces and militants also exchanged fire during the operation launched in Northern Zhob district’s Gawal Ismailzai area this morning.

“One suicide bomber blew himself up while the other one was killed by security forces,” a security official was quoted as saying by Dawn online.

Security forces also recovered 500 bombs, 200 kg of explosives, 50 jackets, 13 rocket launchers and other weapons during the operation.

Thailand marks 10th anniversary of Indian Ocean tsunami

The Thai government Friday hosted a remembrance ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami which caused heavy casualties.

The ceremony, “Ten Years on: Remembering the Indian Ocean Tsunami”, was held in the resort town of Khao Lak in southern Phang-nga province, the very place where the worst of Thailand’s tsunami damage was concentrated.

“I take this opportunity to pay respect to those Thai and foreign nationals who lost their lives in the tsunami,” Xinua quoted Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha as saying at the ceremony.

Emirates to close 2014 as world’s largest operator of wide-body jets

Dubai-based Emirates Airline Friday said that it will round-off 2014 as the world’s largest operator of wide-body passenger jets in the world with a fleet of 218 aircraft, in addition to 14 freighters.

“This year we have navigated through an 80-day period of reduced operations due to upgrade works at our hub airport, regional conflicts which impacted our operations and flight routes, the Ebola outbreak, fluctuations in oil prices and currency exchange rates, and economic uncertainty in many markets worldwide,” Emirates Airline president Tim Clark said.

Fog affects over 60 trains in Delhi, no respite Saturday

The national capital experienced a chilly Friday with the maximum temperature four notches below the seaon’s average at 17 degrees Celsius while a foggy morning affected movement of over 60 trains. Similar weather is likely Saturday, the Met Office said.

According to an official of Northern Railway, 31 trains coming to the city were delayed while 30 trains departing from Delhi had to be recheduled and four had to be cancelled due to dense fog.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the weather to remain similar Saturday with no repite from the dense fog.

Pakistan government, PTI to finalise ordinance

The Pakistan government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are meeting Friday to finalise the draft for the judicial commission ordinance which will probe allegations of rigging during the 2013 general election.

The meeting is being held at the residence of Jehangir Khan Tareen, PTI general secretary, after the Imran Khan-led party earlier rejected a draft for the judicial commission ordinance.

The draft was handed to him by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar during the all-party conference Dec 24.

Gas leak kills three at South Korean n-reactor’s construction site

Three workers have been confirmed dead, while another one was wounded, in a gas leakage accident Friday in southeastern South Korea where a new nuclear reactor is under construction.

The workers were suffocated at about 5.18 p.m. at the construction site for the Shin Gori No.3 reactor in the country’s southeastern city of Ulsan, Xinhua reported citing Yonhap news agency. The reactor is scheduled to begin operation in June next year.

Nitrogen gas was believed to be leaked underground at an auxiliary building of the reactor, but the exact cause was under investigation.

Hamas to stick to August truce with Israel

The Islamic Hamas movement informed Egypt and other parties Friday that it is committed to the ceasefire agreement reached with Israel in August, a senior official said.

“We held contacts with Egypt and other parties and informed them that Hamas is committed to the ceasefire agreement reached in Cairo Aug 26,” Xinhua quoted Hamas deputy chief Ismail Haneya as telling reporters in Gaza.

He added that Hamas would be committed to the agreement reached in Cairo “as long as and as much as the occupation is committed to it”.

The Zambia national football team has shifted its camp to South Africa to intensify preparations ahead of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the country’s governing body for the sport said Friday.

Actor Arjun Kapoor, who is busy promoting his forthcoming action thriller “Tevar”, says he has been ignorant about his health for a long time and will take more care in the New Year.

The 29-year-old, who faced a severe back injury while shooting for “Tevar”, took to the social media Friday to share his concern about his heath.
