Aziz Qureshi to take oath as Mizoram governor on Friday

Aziz Qureshi will be sworn-in as the new Governor of Mizoram on Friday, state Protocol Officer David L Pachuau said today.

The decision was made at the meeting of senior officials chaired by the state Chief Secretary Lalmalsawma, Pachuau
said.

Qureshi, transferred to Mizoram from Uttarakhand on December 30, will arrive here on Thursday, he said.

16 killed in Afghan clash

A clash between Afghan security forces and the Taliban left at least 15 militants and a security personnel dead, and seven others injured in Ghazni province Sunday, an official said.

“Security forces launched cleanup operations in Gadakhil area of Muqar district to stabilise security on Kabul-Kandahar highway and killed 15 militants,” Shafiq Nang, spokesman for Ghazni’s provincial government, told Xinhua.

Five militants and two security personnel sustained injuries. The rest of the militants fled leaving 15 bodies behind.

Odisha district takes measures to check water-borne diseases

With jaundice spreading in western Odisha town of Sambalpur, Koraput district administration has initiated precautionary measures to check possible outbreak of waterborne diseases.

“Everyday we are collecting 10 water samples to examine presence of germs in them which could lead to outbreak of waterborne diseases,” additional district medical officer (ADMO), Koraput, Arun Kumar Padhi, said.

“No germ was found in any of the water samples tested so far,” he said

Trinamool may move SC against CBI ‘misuse’

West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress Sunday indicated it might move the Supreme Court against the “misuse” of the CBI by the central government in the Saradha scam probe to “settle political scores” with the party.

“Nothing has been finalised yet. Yes, moving the Supreme Court is definitely an option before us. The centre is using the CBI to settle political scores with us. We can knock on the doors of the apex court,” a minister and Trinamool leader told IANS on condition of anonymity.

Major terror bid foiled in Pakistani city

Pakistani security forces foiled a major terror bid in Balochistan’s Sibi city by defusing a roadside bomb Sunday, the day Eid Milad-un-Nabi was being celebrated across the country, media reported.

Frontier Corps (FC) personnel Sunday evening defused an improvised explosive device (IED) planted in a motorcycle parked by the road where a procession in connection with Eid Milad-un-Nabi was scheduled to pass, Dawn online reported.

Sources in FC told the newspaper that militants had planted four kg of explosives in the motorcycle to target the procession.

Congress to challenge Rajasthan panchayat poll education norm

The Congress and some other parties will Monday file a petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the Rajasthan government’s ordinance on educational qualification for contesting panchayat polls, Congress leader Sachin Pilot said Sunday.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has set a taken a New Year resolution to read a book every two weeks this year wherein he has created a page on the social media website “A Year of Books” inviting 30 million users to like the page.

The reason why Zuckerberg started this page is because he believes that books are “intellectually fulfilling”, reported the Verge.

He said that books allow people to go deeper inside a topic to explore it as compared to most media today.

Quadrantid meteor shower will make this weekend’s night sky sparkle, making it the first meteor shower of 2015.

Quadrantid meteor got its name from a constellation named Quadrans Muralis, the Wall Quadrant, which was incorporated into the constellation Bootes in 1922, CBS News reported.

While the Quadrantid meteor shower can produce as many bright meteors during its peak as the more famous Perseids, the shower’s actual peak time is much narrower, making the chances of seeing a Quadrantid much less than those of seeing a Perseid.

NASA to set test inflatable technology

The US space agency is planning to test inflatable spacecraft technology for future missions to Red Planet.

For this, NASA scientists are considering to use a blow-up heat shield which resembles stacking ring of doughnuts that young children play with, Daily Mail reported.

To begin with, the scientists aim to test how inflatable technology performs upon re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

According to the team, a lightweight, inflatable heat shield could help a future spacecraft slow down enough to enter Mars’ atmosphere at ease.

Elderly couple murdered in Agra

An elderly couple was Sunday found battered to death inside their house here, police said.

The bodies of Harish Chandra Agarwal and his wife Lalita Devi, both 70 years old, were found around noon in their house in Kammu Tola area. Police said a five kg weight was used to hit the two on their heads.

Agarwal was a wholesale cloth merchant. His two sons are settled in Surat, Gujarat.

Jewellery, cash and other valuables were missing from the house. A dog squad searched the house but found no clues.

Extreme bad weather was the “triggering factor” behind the AirAsia plane crash with icing likely causing engine damage, Indonesia’s meteorological agency has said in the first official word on the possible reasons for the horrific incident.

“Based on the available data received on the location of the aircraft’s last contact, the weather was the triggering factor behind the accident,” an initial report on the website of Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.

Singapore cargo ship runs aground, 25-member crew rescued

Twenty-five crew members of a Singapore-registered 51,000-tonne cargo vessel were rescued safely after the vessel ran aground off the Isle of Wight, British Coastguard said on Sunday.

The cargo ship Hoegh Osaka became grounded on Bramble Bank in the Solent, near the Isle of Wight, at around 9.20pm last night and began listing to one side at 45 degrees, official sources said.

UK airport witness chaos after unusual plane error

Thousands of passengers faced delays of over an hour at UK’s Stansted Airport after an unusual security blunder caused chaos in the departure lounge.

A Ryanair plane from Lisbon, Portugal unloaded its passengers at a departure gate instead of one set aside for arrivals.

This meant the arriving passengers passed straight into the departure lounge, mixing with people waiting to catch their flights.

Airport procedure meant that everyone in the departure lounge had to leave and go through security again, causing long queues.

Pak court to hear on Jan 6 govt appeal against 26/11 plotter Lakhvi’s bail

Pakistan government’s appeal against the bail to Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attack, will be heard by a court here on Tuesday, a court official said on Sunday.

“The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has fixed January 6 for hearing of the government’s plea against Lakhvi’s bail on its request. A division bench has been constituted to take up the matter,” the official told PTI.

He said the government had requested the IHC to consider the matter “urgent” and fix the date of hearing at earliest.

Rallies, processions banned in Dhaka amid political tensions

All rallies and processions have been banned in the Bangladeshi capital city in the light of simmering political tensions between the opposition and ruling parties, a media report said Sunday.

The step was taken to curb spiralling tensions between supporters of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the ruling Awami League (AL) ahead of the first anniversary of last year’s controversial general elections held Jan 5, bdnews24.com reported.

The BNP-led opposition alliance had boycotted the general elections and has been pressing for fresh elections since then.
