Compensation must reach disaster-hit farmers: Uddhav Thackeray

Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray Monday announced that his party would see to it that the recent compensation announced by the state government for the hailstorm hit farmers reaches the affected people.

“We will ensure that the compensation announced by the government reaches the right people…We shall do our best for the farmers,” Thackeray said here.

He observed that the state government has lagged behind in providing relief to the farmers grappling with drought and unseasonal rain, adding that he plans to tour the affected regions again.

Some progress in talks with PDP, no breakthrough yet: BJP

There has been “some progress” in the talks with the PDP for government-formation in Jammu and Kashmir but “no breakthrough” has been reached yet, BJP leader Ram Madhav said Monday.

“The talks will continue,” the party general secretary told media persons here.

Congress attacks government over Pakistani boat incident

The Congress Monday attacked the ruling BJP over the Pakistani boat incident, asserting that every citizen has a right to question the government.

“We request the spokespersons of the BJP to stop making public relation events out of issues of national security,” Congress spokesperson Randip Singh Surjewala told the media here.

“It is our right as the opposition to question the conflicting reports in the media,” he said.

“Every citizen of this country has the right to question the government, the ruling party cannot brand them as Pakistanis,” Surjewala said.

BJP MP sends notice to AAP’s Ashutosh

BJP parliamentarian Ramesh Bidhuri Monday sent a legal notice to AAP leader Ashutosh for maligning his image and blaming him and his family members for a clash after a TV debate show.

Bidhuri said that by blaming him and his relatives for the violence, Ashutosh tried to defame him.

At least five people were injured Saturday in a clash between Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers following the Hindi television channel debate show in Tughlakabad area of south Delhi, which is also the constituency Bidhuri represents in the Lok Sabha.

Manufacturing sector grows gradually in 2014; more growth eyed in 2015

India’s manufacturing sector witnessed a gradual but significant expansion during the year 2014 and ended on a higher note reaching two-year high in December, according to an HSBC survey.

This gradual expansion is expected to continue further this year as well, analysts believe.

India’s manufacturing PMI rose to 54.5 in December, 2014, while in the corresponding period a year ago it stood at 50.7, just above the crucial 50 mark which separates growth from contraction.

Sugar output in Oct-Dec rises by 27.3%: ISMA

The country’s sugar production increased by 27.3 percent to 7.46 million tonnes in the first three months of the current 2014-15 season, but continuous fall in prices is a cause of concern for millers, industry body ISMA said Monday.

Sugar output stood at 5.86 million tonnes in the October-December period of the 2013-14 season. Sugar season runs from October to September.

Two BNP activists killed in clashes with rivals in Bangladesh

Two members of the opposition BNP were shot dead today in clashes with the ruling Awami League supporters, prompting authorities to call out paramilitary forces to control the situation on the first anniversary of the controversial elections boycotted by the opposition.

“Clashes erupted as two processions of rival activists became face-to-face…The two activists from BNP have died instantly in gunshots,” an eyewitness said.

Censor board member says he objected to some scenes in ‘PK’

A film censor board member Monday claimed to have objected to some of the scenes of the Aamir Khan-starrer “PK” ahead of the film’s release but they were ignored.

According to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) member Satish Kalyankar, he had raised the objection over some scenes before the board’s CEO but the latter paid no heed to his concerns.

Shoe thrown at Bihar CM, man arrested

A shoe was hurled at Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi during his weekly ‘Janata Durbar’ here Monday, police said. The shoe missed its target but the man who threw it was arrested.

A smiling Manjhi told the media he failed to understand the intention of the man – identified as Amritosh Kumar, a resident of Saran district.

“The shoe fell four-five feet from Manjhi but it shocked him. He never expected such an incident,” a police officer told IANS.

Youth who slapped Mamata’s nephew faces attempted murder charge

The youth who slapped Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was arrested Monday on various charges including attempt to murder.

The youth, Debasish Acharya, a resident of Tamluk in East Midnapore district, is now under treatment in Tamluk Hospital in serious condition after he was brutally assaulted by Trinamool workers for attacking Banerjee during the public meeting at Chandipur of the district Sunday.

Nepal introduces women-only buses to combat groping

Nepal`s capital has introduced women-only minibuses in a bid to protect female passengers from sexual assault, the transport operator organising the service said on Monday.

Four 17-seater minibuses were flagged off in Kathmandu with large “women-only” signs on Sunday and they will operate on key routes in Kathmandu during morning and evening rush hour.

“Groping and sexual assault is a problem for women who use buses, especially during peak hours when buses are overcrowded,” said Bharat Nepal, president of the Bagmati Federation Transport Union, which introduced the service.

Pakistan cancels 2015’s first anti-polio campaign

Pakistan today cancelled this year’s first anti-polio campaign due to security reasons amid an attack on a polio worker in the restive Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

The anti-polio drive was to begin today in some areas of the Rawalpindi district, the entire Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and parts of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan.

The target of the Short Internal Activity Days (SIAD) campaign, which had to be held in the high-risk union councils of 54 districts, was to vaccinate 8.5 million children.

A former aide to South Korean President Park Geun-Hye has been charged with leaking a document on the president’s personal life which triggered defamation suits against domestic and foreign media, prosecutors said today.

The internal presidential office document claimed that another former Park aide, Jeong Yun-Hoe, meddled in state affairs by receiving regular briefings from presidential officials despite having no official position in the administration.

Criminal tracking network being set up in Tripura

A Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) is being set up in Tripura as part of a nation-wide project to keep tab on criminals and to curb crimes, a top Tripura Police officer said here Monday.

The CCTNS project, launched by union home ministry in 2009, is an advanced software application which would empower police organisations and help policing through the e-governance method.

“All police stations in Tripura have been inter-connected through Internet networks under the CCTNS,” Director General of Tripura Police K. Nagaraj told reporters.

Girl found dead in septic tank in Delhi

A six-year-old girl, presumed missing overnight, was found drowned in the septic tank of her house here Monday morning, police said

The body of Ritika, who was missing since Sunday evening, was spotted by her father in their house in southeast Delhi’s Jaitpur area Monday morning.

No injury marks were found on her body, police said.

We had no clue Dhoni would quit: Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli, who has succeeded Mahendra Singh Dhoni as India captain after he quit playing in Tests, spoke out Monday on what happened just after the third Test against Australia at Melbourne when Dhoni entered the dressing room and announced the shocker.

“We were doing our usual thing after the game, packing our bags and stuff, and then he came in and said he wants to say something. And he just announced it,” Kohli was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

Kohli also added that the whole team was shocked to hear Dhoni’s decision as it came all of a sudden like a bolt from the blue.
