How iron in Sun is key to energy transmission

A new study has recently revealed that the iron in Earth’s Sun is a key to how stars transmit energy.

Working at temperatures matching the interior of the sun, researchers at Sandia National Laboratories’ Z machine have been able to determine experimentally, for the first time in history, iron’s role in inhibiting energy transmission from the center of the sun to near the edge of its radiative band, the section of the solar interior between the sun’s core and outer convection zone.

Housing sales likely to rise to 1.92 lakh units this year: JLL

Housing sales are estimated to rise this year to 1.92 lakh units in the country’s top seven cities on expectations of interest rate cut and stable prices, according to property consultant JLL India.

Housing sales fell to 1.75 lakh units in the primary markets of seven major cities in 2014 as compared to nearly 2 lakh units in the previous year.

These seven cities are Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune.
Supply, however, is estimated to decline marginally to 2.18 lakh units this year from 2.2 lakh units in 2014.

Office space absorption rose 10% in 2014: Report

Absorption of office space increased by nearly 10 percent in 2014 to over 33 million square feet compared to the previous year, indicating optimism in the commercial real estate market which is likely to continue in 2015 as well, according to a report.

The report by property consultant CBRE said “enhanced” levels of activity in corporate real estate transactions have led to a total office space take-up of more than 33 million square feet (sq ft) during 2014.

Rupee logs best single-day gain in 3 weeks, up 40 paise at 63.17 Vs USD

Bucking the weak trend in stocks, the Indian rupee on Wednesday bounced back by 40 paise in its sharpest single-day gain in three weeks to end at 63.17 against the Greenback on fresh dollar selling by exporters and some banks.

Besides, talk of foreigners buying domestic debt also helped the local currency snap a two-session downward trend.

The rupee commenced better at 63.51 a dollar from last close of 63.57. However, it fell back to the day’s low of 63.56 on some weakness in local equities amid strong dollar.

Companies line up rights issue worth Rs 4,000 cr

Indian companies including Future Retail and Zee Media Corp have lined up rights issue worth nearly Rs 4,000 crore in 2015 for repayment of loan and to support working capital requirements.

Apart from Future Retail and Zee Media Corp, GMR Infrastructure, CanFin Homes, Wintac and Polson are among the firms that plan to raise funds by issuing equity shares to existing shareholders.

While Future Retail’s rights issue is schedule to open on January 15, other firms are expected to launch their rights issue in the coming months.

ICICI Bank launches contactless debit & credit cards

ICICI Bank on Wednesday launched the country’s first contactless debit and credit cards that use the near-field communication technology, enabling one to make payments by just waving the card near merchant terminals instead of swiping the same.

The near field communication (NFC) technology provides customers improved convenience of speed and security over traditional cards as these cards can complete a transaction faster and be more secured as they remain with customer.

Power Ministry to finalise draft Cabinet note on tariff policy by Jan 15

Aiming to bring another set of reforms in the sector, Power Ministry is drafting a Cabinet note proposing amendments to the Tariff Policy for enabling greater competition in the sector.

The draft Cabinet note is likely to be finalised by next week.

According to sources, the Cabinet note proposing certain amendments to the Tariff Policy, which was incorporated in 2006, is under preparation and the Ministry of Power will be ready with a draft by January 15.

Use post offices to deliver services, info: PM

To leverage the assets of postal network, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said post offices in rural areas can be used to deliver various services and information to the individual households.

He also said the postal network can become a driving force for the economy, similar to the Indian Railways, and the huge assets held by the Postal department across the country can be suitably used for the benefit of the people, he said.

Boat row: Pakistan rejects India’s claims as baseless, preposterous

Pakistan on Tuesday termed as “baseless and preposterous” India’s assertions that the boat, which exploded off the Gujarat coast during an Indian Coast Guard operation, belonged to it.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam also blamed India for escalation of tension on the Line of Control and Working Boundary, alleging it is an attempt to distract Pakistani armed forces from its fight against terrorists.

“The baseless and preposterous allegations by India regarding the so called terror boat from Pakistan are also in the same vein,” she said.

Military presence may deter Sri Lankan voters: Monitors

A monitoring group expressed concerns today that the military presence in the former war zone of northern Sri Lanka may lower voter turnout in the Presidential Election on Thursday.

Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu from the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence said that concerns have been raised about the vote in the north in particular and about the deployment of security forces that could have “an adverse impact on the voter turnout.”

Sri Lanka’s military has been accused of intimidating opposition voters in previous elections and campaigning for President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Two terrorists executed in Pakistan

Two convicted terrorists were hanged till death in Pakistan on Wednesday morning, media reported.

The latest executions have brought the number of those hanged until death to nine.

The executions started as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted the moratorium on capital punishment in the country in the aftermath of the Peshawar carnage that left some 150 people, most of them children, dead, Dawn online reported.

Pakistan PM arrives on two-day Bahrain visit

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Wednesday arrived here on a two-day visit to Bahrain.

He will hold talks with King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, on bilateral ties, the Gulf Daily News reported.

The delegation-level talks and one-on-one meeting with King Hamad will focus on further enhancing bilateral relations in various fields, including energy cooperation, manpower employment, trade, investment and defence.

Police academy attacked in Afghanistan

Suicide bombers Wednesday stormed a police academy in Afghanistan`s Khost city, a police official said.

“One blast rocked the city and a gun battle continues around the police academy,” Xinhua quoted an official as saying.

Witnesses said they saw two injured policeman being taken to hospitals.

Bangladesh HC bans media coverage of Zia’s son

Bangladesh High Court today ordered a ban on broadcast, publication and dissemination of statements of the “fugitive” son of opposition leader Khaleda Zia amid heightened political tension in the country after the deadly violence on the first anniversary of the controversial polls.

“The High Court asked the government to take steps to prohibit publication, broadcast and dissemination of Tarique Rahman’s speeches and statements in print, electronic and social media as long as he remains fugitive,” Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Roy told newsmen.

Afghan provincial judge assassinated in bomb attack

A provincial judge was assassinated in a targeted killing when his car was blown off with a `sticky` magnet bomb in Afghanistan`s Jalalabad city Wednesday, police said.

Judge Mahmud-ul-Hassan was killed in the attack and his two children travelling with him in the car were wounded, police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal said, Xinhua reported.

The attack is the latest in a string of targeted killings, the police spokesman said.

Khaleda Zia skips Bangladesh court appearance in graft cases

Bangladesh opposition leader Khaleda Zia on Wednesday did not appear before a court here in connection with the hearing of graft cases against her, citing illness and confinement by authorities for the past four days.

The counsels of the former prime minister filed a plea seeking more time for her to appear in the court in the ‘Zia Orphanage Trust’ and the ‘Zia Charitable Trust’ graft cases.

The court rejected the petition but exempted Zia from appearing at today’s hearing.

Teenage Delhi girl trampled to death by elephant

A teenage Delhi girl was chased and trampled to death by a wild elephant in Rajaji National Park area after her family decided to take an ancient and heavily forested route to reach Neelkanth temple in Pauri district.

The incident occurred yesterday when the family decided to go on foot to the Shiva temple from Swargashram through a dense forest route which falls in the National Park area known for its substantial population of elephants, Deputy Ranger Forest Ali Hasan said.

Major IAS officers’ reshuffle in Andhra Pradesh

With the cadre allocation of All India Services (AIS) officers more or less finalised following provisional allotment made by the Centre in last week December, the Andhra Pradesh government on Wednesday effected a massive reshuffle of IAS officers, giving postings to many who reported to the state from neighbouring Telangana.

‘Bank unions have not scaled down demands drastically’

The unions in the banking sector have not actually scaled down their initial demands drastically though it may seem so in the light of a 1.5 percent increase in the offer by the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), a union leader said Wednesday.

He said the unions and the IBA Wednesday decided to set up small committees to look into the formers’ demands like five-day banking, bettering pension benefits and others, he added.

On Jan 6, United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) decided to defer their Jan 7 all-India strike after IBA upped its hike offer by 1.5 percent to 12.5 percent.

Bus mishap: AP CM announces ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to deceased

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the next of the kin of 15 persons who were killed in the bus mishap in Anantapur district on Wednesday.

“Expressing condolences over the accident, Naidu also announced an aid of Rs 2 lakh to those seriously injured and Rs one lakh to those who sustained injuries in the accident,” a state government release said.

Videocon Telecom plans to invest over Rs.340 crore in the next one year for rollout of internet service provider (ISP) services in six to seven circles, the company said Wednesday.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) Jan 6 granted to the company a unified license to provide Internet services all over India.

The investment shall include cost of ISP license, cost of Network deployment and investment in hot spots, a company statement said.
