Taliban chief orders militants to target Nawaz Sharif’s party

Pakistani Taliban chief has ordered militants to hit the leaders of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s ruling party after the government lifted a moratorium on death penalty and set up military courts to try terrorists.

“I urge the Mujahideen to hit them (PML-N leaders) hard, so that either they come to the right path or sent to hell,” Tehreek-e-Taliban chief Mullah Fazlullah said in a video message apparently recorded at his hideout in Afghanistan.

Pak PM Nawaz Sharif among richest Pak lawmakers at Rs 2bn

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is among the richest lawmakers in Pakistan with net assets exceeding Rs 2 billion in a country where millions of people live below the poverty line.

According to Sharif’s statement to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for 2014-15, the total value of assets in his name and that of his wife jumped to Rs 2.36 billion from Rs 1.71 billion.

His shares in Hudaibiya engineering company, Hudaibiya Paper Mills, Muhammad Bakhsh Textile Mills and Ramzan Spinning Mills remained the same.

Sensex jumps 184pts, Infosys shares up 5 pc on robust earnings

Rising for the second session, the benchmark Sensex today jumped by about 184 points, driven by a sharp 5 per cent rally in Infosys shares after the IT major’s December quarter earnings beat market expectations.

The NSE Nifty also rose 49.90 points to end at 8,284.50. Infosys, India’s second-largest IT firm, reported 13 per cent jump in consolidated net profit for the third quarter and maintained revenue outlook for the entire fiscal ending March.

Gains in Infosys (5.02 pc) and TCS (2.80 pc) shares contributed to over 140-points to Sensex’s 183.67 point rise.

Police to seek court permission to probe Haji Yakub case

Uttar Pradesh police today said it would begin a probe into a case against former minister and BSP leader Haji Yakub Qureshi for his controversial comments defending the terror attack on French weekly Charlie Hebdo after seeking the court’s permission.

“We will seek permission of the court before probing the matter”, IG law and Order, A Satish Ganesh told reporters here.

As per provisions, court’s permission is needed to probe such cases, Ganesh said, adding, police would follow the process.

DU to issue notice to Maths professor after harassment probe

Delhi University will be issuing a show cause notice to a Mathematics professor on why her services should not be terminated after a committee found that her allegations of sexual harassment levelled against several varsity officials were false.

“Dr Sapna Jain, working with Department of Mathematics, DU had accused several officials of university of having sexually harassed her. These allegations were not found to be true by the probe committee,” said Abha Dev Habib, member of varsity’s Executive Council (EC).

Around 7,000 solar pump sets to be installed for AP farmers

Andhra Pradesh government has set a target to install 7,000 solar agricultural pump sets in the state during the current financial year to reduce the grid power consumption by farmers, a senior official has said.

The farmers will be provided solar pump sets at a subsidised cost, Kamalakar Babu, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP), told reporters here last evening.

Sarma new Admiral Superintendent of Naval Dockyard

Rear Admiral S R Sarma here Thursday took over as the Admiral Superintendent, Naval Dockyard, from Rear Admiral A K Saxena.

Rear Admiral Sarma was commissioned as an electrical officer in the Indian Navy in August 1983. He holds a Masters Degree in Computer Science and Engineering, according to a Navy release.

The Flag Officer is an alumnus of Naval War College. He has held various important appointments in the Indian Navy, including operational, staff, dockyard and research and development.

His afloat appointments include frontline warships Mysore, Krishna, Rana and Vindhyagiri.

Rahul should get full responsibility of Congress: Digvijaya

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi should be given “poori javabdari” (full responsibility) of the party, its general secretary Digvijaya Singh said Thursday.

“He (Gandhi) has taken responsibility of party vice president. Sonia ji (party president Sonia Gandhi) is urged to give him full responsibility of the All India Congress Committee,” Digvijaya Singh told reporters here.
