US Secretary of State John Kerry today said no act of terror will ever stop “the march of freedom” and the entire world is with the people of France.

In the deadliest terror attack in France in four decades, heavily-armed gunmen stormed a satirical newspaper’s office in Paris on January 7 and shot dead at least 12 people.

Andhra RTI commissioner seeks action from govt on erring officials

Andhra Pradesh Information Commissioner P Vijaya Babu has sought action by the state government against those officers who have failed to provide information to public sought under the RTI Act.

Though Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has been making persistent efforts to bring e-governance to create transparency and accountability in administration and its working, unfortunately, officials are not supporting his initiatives, Babu told reporters here today.

The officer was in city to attend a RTI awareness programme.

Vohra visits displaced Kashmir villagers

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra Sunday visited a camp in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district where people displaced from border villages following Pakistan shelling are lodged.

Accompanied by senior officials, the governor visited the Hiranagar camp where around 60 families are staying.

“The governor took stock of the problems faced by the families who had to abandon their homes because of shelling by Pakistan Rangers,” an official told IANS, adding Vohra ordered free ration and other facilities for them.

Odisha alerts health institutes on swine flu

The Odisha government has asked all the medical institutions in the state to be vigilant against swine flu, H1N1 virus, after a middle-aged man tested positive.

“We have asked all the district medical officers and medical colleges to take precautionary measures to counter the seasonal disease. Even though it would not be an outbreak-like situation, we have directed them to be alert,” said Public Health director Kailash Das Sunday.

He, however, urged people not to panic as it would not be an epidemic like previous years.

Woman brutalised, murdered in south Delhi

A 30-year-old woman employed with an export company was allegedly gang-raped and murdered and her body dumped in a Delhi Development Authority (DDA) nursery in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area here.

The incident comes almost a month after rape of a 27-year-old woman executive by the driver of a popular taxi service Uber in south Delhi.

The woman went missing yesterday evening and a missing complaint was filed by her husband.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon arrives for Vibrant Gujarat Summit

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Saturday arrived at Ahmedabad city airport ahead of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit which kicks off Sunday.

He is headed for the state capital of Gandhinagar from the airport.

Gujarat government spokesperson and the state minister Saurabh Patel said that Ban was also likely to visit Sabarmati Ashram of Mahatma Gandhi in Ahmedabad and few other places in the state.

The global investor summit would be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi tomorrow.

Healthcare quality should not suffer in quest for more doctors: Nadda

Union Health Minister J P Nadda Saturday said the medical education framework must attend to the “critical requirement” of enhancing clinical skills which he claimed often get ignored due to the pressure of producing more doctors.

The Union minister stressed the need for developing clinical skills in the doctors.

“Due to the pressure of producing more doctors, the clinical skills tend to get ignored. The medical education framework should attend to this critical requirement,” Nadda said.

He was addressing All India Medical and Dental Students Conference at Raipur Chattisgarh today.

Suicide bomb attack in Nigerian market: Police

A woman suicide bomber attack struck at a local market in Maiduguri, capital of northeastern Nigerian state of Borno and headquarters of Boko Haram, police said Saturday but did not disclose casualties.

No official casualties have been reported so far, Borno state police spokesperson Gideon Jibrin told Xinhua.

The extent of damage was still being ascertained and rescue efforts still going on at the place of the explosion, Jibrin said. He said official casualty figure will be given after ongoing rescue operation.

Over 500 arrested in Pak for hate speeches

Pakistani police have arrested over 500 people including clerics for “misusing loudspeakers, holding provocative speeches and possessing hate material” in Punjab province.

According to a handout issued by Punjab police, “The police have registered over 700 cases against those involved in misusing loudspeakers, holding provocative speeches and possessing hate material throughout the province during the last two days”.

Indian-origin man in Canada gets life term for killing wife

An Indian-origin man in Canadas’ Alberta province has been sentenced to life in prison for dragging his wife from a moving vehicle and strangling her to death in 2013, media reports said Saturday.

A Calgary court was told the crime occurred when Gagandeep Sidhu, 34, and his wife Monisha Sidhu, 26, got into an argument while on their way to the Peter Lougheed Centre March 29, 2013 for him to see a doctor, Calgary Herald reported.

French attackers never visited country: Malaysian police

Malaysian Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar Saturday refuted reports that the duo involved in Friday’s terror attacks in France had visited his country.

Khalid said on his Twitter account that according to the result of the checks by Royal Malaysia Police, the two – Amedy Coulibaly and Hayat Boumeddiene – never entered the southeast Asian country, Xinhua reported.

Some foreign media reports said that Coulibaly and Boumeddiene had once traveled to Malaysia for holiday without giving specific dates of their trip.

Sonia seeks blueprint to increase accountability, expand base

In a move aimed at party’s organisational revamp and electoral comeback, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has written to party chiefs in states seeking their opinion on ways to increase accountability and expand their base.

President Pranab Mukherjee Saturday asked all governors to ensure that peace and tranquility of the country is maintained.

Interacting with governors/lt governors through video conferencing from Rashtrapati Bhavan here, the president said: “We have to be ever vigilant against all efforts to disturb peace and tranquility”.

Sunanda murder: Inventory of articles not given to board, says report

The AIIMS board, which had conducted the postmortem of Sunanda Pushkar, the wife of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s wife, were not provided “the inventory of the articles found at the crime scene”, the latest autopsy report said.

The third and latest autopsy report, which was handed over to Delhi Police Dec 29, 2014, has ruled out Pushkar’s natural death and confirmed her cause of death due to poisoning “oral or via injection”.

However, it notes that inventory of articles collected from the spot needed to be placed before the board.

One jawan martyred during Naxal operation in Chhattisgarh

One jawan was killed while four others got injured during a Naxal operation in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district.

“During an operation in Narayanpur district, there was a scuffle with the Naxalites. One jawan has been martyred and four others are injured,” said RK Vij, the ADG of Naxal operations.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had earlier last month asked the Maoists to shun the path of violence, saying there is no space for violence in a democracy.

India to host next World Hindi Conference: Sushma

India will host the next World Hindi Conference later this year as part of efforts to popularize Hindi in the world, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said here Saturday on the occasion of World Hindi Day.

Addressing a gathering, which included Mauritius Vice Prime Minister Showkutally Soodhum and Hindi experts and enthusiasts, she said that the date and place would be decided soon.

The last such conference, the Ninth World Hindi Conference was held in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 2012. The event is held every three years, while the secretariat is in Mauritius.

ISRO scientist chosen for Vikram Sarabhai Award

Distinguished scientist M.Y.S.Prasad, who is director of the India space agency’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre, has been awarded the Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Award for 2014-15, the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) announced Saturday.

In a statement, the ISCA said Prasad of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was chosen for the award, which comprises a gold medal and certificate, in recognition of his outstanding contribution.

BJP has no positive agenda, says Kejriwal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was resorting to personal attacks as the BJP had no positive agenda for the upcoming Delhi assembly polls, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal said after being described as an “anarchist” by Modi.

“The prime minister called me an anarchist, I have never indulged in such personal attacks. It seems that BJP is nervous and have no positive agenda for Delhi polls,” Kejriwal said here at a press conference soon after Modi’s rally where he targeted Kejriwal for his “anarchist” remarks and asked voters to punish the AAP in the assembly elections.

212 Cambodian villagers infected with HIV

At least 212 villagers have been infected with HIV in Cambodia’s Battambang province, the health ministry and the World Health Organisation (WHO) jointly announced Saturday.

“From Dec 8-31, 2014, a total of 1,940 people from Roka commune voluntarily undertook HIV testing and counseling and 212 people tested positive,” a joint statement said.

“Among the 212 HIV carriers, 39 people are below 14 years old, 127 are between 15 to 59 years old and 46 people are 60 years old and above,” Xinhua quoted the statement as saying.

Protein responsible for sepsis identified

Enhanced levels of a protein that induces the creation of fatty acid can lead to sepsis, a leading cause of death for patients in intensive care units, new research has found.

The UCP2 protein is enhanced in patients with sepsis, the findings showed.

“These results identify UCP2 as a potential therapeutic target in inflammatory diseases such as sepsis,” said Augustine Choi from Weill Cornell Medical College, New York.

The excessive systemic inflammation in individuals with sepsis damages organs and can lead to death.

Biopsies do not promote cancer spread: Study

Dispelling the myth that biopsies cause cancer to spread, US researchers have shown that patients who undergo the procedure are likely to live longer than those who do not.

That a biopsy can cause some cancer cells to spread is a long-held belief by a number of patients and even some physicians.

“This study shows that physicians and patients should feel reassured that a biopsy is very safe,” said the study’s senior investigator Michael Wallace, professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Florida.

Chain snatcher wanted in 19 cases arrested

A 27-year-old man, wanted in 19 cases of chain snatching, was arrested here Saturday, police said.

Sandeep was arrested from the Vikas Puri area of West Delhi when he and his accomplice were fleeing on a motorbike after snatching a gold chain from a woman, Sunita Khurana.

“Incidentally the bike slipped and the two fell down,” said police and added that Khurana, who was accompanied by her son, raised an alarm.

“Police constables who were nearby immediately nabbed Sandeep while his accomplice managed to flee. The chain was recovered from Sandeep’s possession,” police said.
