Jaitley hopes states will vie for investments

Amidst Vibrant Gujarat Summit attracting proposals worth a staggering Rs 25 lakh crore, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday expressed hope that states would consistently pursue business-friendly policies and compete with each other to attract investments.

Appreciating efforts of West Bengal to attract investments, the Finance Minister said the Centre would extend all support to the Trinamool-government to promote industry and boost growth in the state.

Pakistan hangs seven more convicts

Seven more convicts were hanged in Pakistan Tuesday taking the total number of executions to 17 since December last year, a media report said.

The hangings took place in Karachi, Sukkur, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi jails, Dawn online reported.

The executed terrorists were Behram Khan, Shahid Haneef, Muhammad Talha, Khaleel Ahmed, Zulfikar Ali, Mushtaq Ahmed and Nawazish Ali.

Behram Khan was found guilty of killing an advocate in a courtroom of the Sindh High Court in April 2003.

Prime minister greets nation on Lohri, Sankranti

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday greeted people on the occasion of Lohri and Makar Sankranti.

“Lohri greetings to everyone! May this festival brighten your lives with abundant happiness, prosperity and good health,” the prime minister tweeted.

Lohri is a winter solstice festival celebrated in many parts of north India.

Modi described Sankranti as a festival which has a relationship with nature and the energy of the sun.

10 terrorists, kidnapped policeman killed in Egypt

Ten terrorists were killed during an army operation to find a kidnapped police officer in Egypt’s north Sinai, hub of Islamist militants, authorities said Tuesday.

The kidnapped police officer was also found killed in a village early Tuesday.

The policeman was travelling Sunday in a bus from the north Sinai city of Rafah to Al-Arish when gunmen stopped the vehicle and took him away, Xinhua news agency reported.

US to provide Pakistan $250 mn in aid: Kerry

The US will provide Pakistan $250 million in addition to the billions of dollars of military aid already spent, Secretary of State John Kerry said here Tuesday

He said the amount will come in the form of food, shelter and other assistance to help people displaced by the conflict in tribal areas, The News International reported.

Pakistan must fight militant groups that threaten Afghan, Indian and US interests, the US secretary of state said.

Blanchett trusts Emu oil for skin

Actress Cate Blanchett, 45, says she swears by the power of Emu oil for keeping her skin in check.

“I tend to use really basic creams, and I like to put an oil on, like an emu oil from Australia. It’s from the Emu (bird) and it’s really nourishing. I prefer an oil to a cream,” dailymail.co.uk quoted her as saying.

“In indigenous Australian culture, that’s the first oil they put on a baby because it’s so hydrating. It’s all pretty basic,” she added.

The product is made from oil taken from the fatty tissue on an Emu’s back.

DMK announces candidate for Srirangam

DMK today announced its candidate for the February 13 bypoll for the Srirangam seat, vacated by AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa following her conviction in a graft case.

Party chief M Karunanidhi announced N Anand’s for the bypoll. He had unsuccessfully contested from the same constituency against Jayalalithaa in 2011.

The election could well turn out to be the report card for the ruling AIADMK and an exercise of self-assessment for opposition parties, including the BJP, which has announced its intentions to contest it, making it a three-cornered fight as on date.

Rajasthan schools to SMS to parents on children

The government-run schools in Rajasthan will now inform parents about their children’s performance and attendance in schools on their cell-phones through short message service (SMS).

“This SMS system is going to be implemented in over 2,000 government schools across the state. As per the plan, the schools will inform the parents about attendance of their children and their performance in examination,” said a senior educational department official.

He said the new system will help the parents to know if their children are bunking schools and how they are performing in examinations.

India taking action against Pakistan’s proxy war: Parrikar

Action is being taken against the proxy war waged by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir, and results will be visible in six-months, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said Tuesday.

“The government is very clear what is happening in Jammu and Kashmir. We have taken a stand…” Parrikar told reporters at a press conference here.

“I don’t want to tell exactly action we are taking but the results will be visible in next six months,” he said.

Iran urges nuclear negotiators to adopt logical attitude

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani Tuesday said it would be against the interests of Western nuclear negotiators if they failed to pursue a reasonable and quick approach towards Iran.

The president made the remarks while addressing a large gathering at a stadium in the southern provincial capital city of Bushehr, state run media IRNA reported.

“Western countries think they have succeeded to create a new problem for Iran by reducing the price of oil but this will not put Iran under any pressure,” he said while commenting on the present situation of oil price in the world market.

In the dock, Sakshi says it is BJP’s ‘internal matter’

Controversial BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj today said he was unaware of any show-cause notice against him from the party over his remarks and termed it as an “internal matter” of BJP.

“I have no information about any notice. If the party has issued any notice, my office must have received it. I have no information.

“This is an internal matter of the BJP and it has nothing to do with the media. If I have said anything wrong, my party might have given a notice to me. I will reply to it,” Maharaj, who represents Unnao in Lok Sabha, told reporters here.

NRIs in UAE welcome SC directive on e-voting

Around 2.6 million Indians who form one of the largest expatriate communities in the UAE have welcomed the Supreme Court of India’s directive to the central government that NRI voting through e-postal system is implemented in eight weeks.

The Supreme Court Monday asked the government to take steps, within eight weeks, for implementation of e-voting by NRIs after being told that the government has accepted the poll panel’s recommendation to this effect.

CBI handed over probe into trust run by Khurshids: Minister

CBI has been handed over the probe into alleged irregularities by a trust run by Congress leader Salman Khurshid and his wife, according to Union minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot.

“The probe into alleged discrepancies in holding camps for handicapped persons by the trust has been handed over to CBI. The officers of districts have said in Economic Offence Wing (EOW) probe that their signatures were forged,” the Minister for social justice and empowerment told reporters here yesterday.

“Legal action will be taken against those found guilty,” he added.

Morocco concerned over escalating violence in Yemen

Morocco has “strongly” condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Yemen and noted with concern the “dangerous escalation of violence” in the Arab nation.

“Morocco strongly condemns these vile terrorist and destruction acts that can only further deteriorate the situation and undermine the positive spirit of consensus and cooperation that has enabled the conclusion of the national dialogue pact,” MAP news agency quoted the foreign ministry as saying in a statement.

CWC raps Modi government for taking ordinance route

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) Tuesday strongly criticised the Narendra Modi government for taking the ordinance route and bypassing parliament on all crucial matters, said senior Congress leader Ambika Soni.

Emerging from a four-hour-long CWC meeting, attended by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi as well as former prime minister Manmohan Singh among others, Soni said: “There was an in-depth discussion on the wrong policies of the NDA (government) that is adopting the ordinance route.”

11 Zimbabweans killed in Botswana accident

At least 11 Zimbabwean immigrants died in a road accident in Botswana after the vehicle they were travelling in hit a tree early Monday, police said.

Botswana Police spokesperson Christopher Mbulawa said all the deceased were travelling in the same vehicle when the accident occurred near the town of Palapye, about 300 km north of here. Seven other passengers, also believed to be Zimbabweans were admitted at Palapye primary hospital.

SC not for liquor vends on highways

The Supreme Court Monday asked all the stake-holders to sit and decided on a “reasonable policy” on the location of liquor shops along the national and the state highways as it said that it did not favour people drinking travelling long distances.

“It is a social issue. We don’t want anybody should lose. All should sit together and have a reasonable policy. We don’t want people to drink while travelling,” said a bench of Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and Justice S.A. Bobde.

PIB launches webpage on Vivekananda

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Monday launched a webpage to mark the 152nd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, which is also celebrated as National Youth Day.

The webpage contains rare archival photographs of Vivekananda and audio recordings of his famous speech at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago Sep 11, 1893.

It also shows Vivekananda’s journey in a chronological way, from early childhood to his meeting with Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, his tour across India and the world, and his experience at the Parliament of Religions.

Odisha chit fund scam: CBI interrogates BJD MP

In yet another jolt to the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha, the CBI Monday interrogated party MP Rabindra Kumar Jena over his alleged link with the multi-crore-rupee chit fund scam in the state.

According to sources in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Jena was questioned for about three hours for his alleged link with the Seashore Group, a major chit fund player in the state.

The Lok Sabha member from Balasore appeared at the CBI office here at 7.50 p.m. He is the second BJD MP to be interrogated by the investigating agency in the chit fund scam.

Two policemen attacked while checking vehicles

Two Delhi Police personnel were attacked by a group of youths during a vehicle checking drive here, officials said Monday.

Head constable Dharamveer, 50, and constable Bunty Chaudhary, 30, were attacked with sticks by four youths in a car in Seelampur area of east Delhi Sunday night.

Dharmveer had signalled the car to stop, but the occupants did not stop and sped away.

In a few minutes, they returned carrying sticks in their hands and attacked both the policemen. They hit Dharamveer on his head and ran away.

Jessica murder case: Warrant against Shyan Munshi cancelled

A court Monday cancelled the non-bailable warrants (NBW) issued against Bollywood actor Shayan Munshi after he appeared before it on a complaint seeking his prosecution for retracting from the testimony in the Jessica Lall murder trial.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate(CMM) Pooran Chand cancelled the warrant on Munshi’s appearance in the court and directed him to be careful in future. Munshi has been out on bail and now the court fixed April 28 for hearing arguments on framing of charges in the case.

The court had issued NBW against Munshi after he failed to appear before the court.

Supreme Court orders status quo on cock fights in Andhra

The Supreme Court Monday directed status quo to be maintained on the traditional cock fight games during the Sankranti festival in Andhra Pradesh.

Asking the Andhra Pradesh High Court to review the case and hear all sides, including the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), a division bench of Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice A.K. Sikri ruled that the status quo be maintained till the high court finally disposes of the matter.

Singapore appoints two firms to plan Andhra capital

Singapore has appointed two firms – Surbana International Consultants and Jurong International – to prepare a master-plan of the new capital of Andhra Pradesh in Vijayawada-Guntur region, it was announced here Monday.

S. Iswaran, minister in the Singapore prime minister’s office, made the announcement at a joint news conference with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Japan, India to hold strategic dialogue

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida is visiting India Jan 16-18 during which both countries will hold the eighth round of the strategic dialogue, after a gap of nearly two years.

Both sides will also review the outcomes since the “pathbreaking” visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Japan last year, a statement said.

During the strategic dialogue, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Kishida will review all aspects of the bilateral relations and also the status of outcomes, including on agreeing to double Japanese investment in India in five years.
