Obama calls USD 80 bln cost-cutting plan “turning point” to overhaul healthcare

Washington, June 21: US President Barack Obama praised a plan to cut costs of prescription drugs for the elderly a “turning point” in the nation’s effort to overhaul health care, in a statement released late Saturday. Obama heralded the agreement reached following negotiations between Democrat Senator Max Baucus from Montana, and the nation’s top drugmakers, which would offer 80 billion dollars over 10 years to help elderly Americans afford medicine and cut the costs of enacting sweeping health care reforms.

Heart attack the biggest killer: survey

New Delhi, June 21: Delhi has always been famous for its street food, but its food habits are now eating into the health of its citizens.

According to the figures released by the Delhi Government’s Economic Survey, heart disease is the single biggest killer in the National Capital, followed by diabetes. According to the survey, released on Friday, heart attacks kill approximately 15,442 people in 2007. In comparison, diabetes kills 3,920 people.

Cancer, though perceived as deadlier, is a distant fourth, killing 2,516 people. A little ahead of cancer, tuberculosis killed 2,597.

Call for stronger effort to protect global refugees

United Nations, June 21: World Refugee Day was observed with a call for greater efforts to protect the more than 42 million people worldwide forced to flee violent conflict and persecution, many lacking basic humanitarian needs, such as shelter, water and food.

”The theme for this year’s observance of World Refugee Day- ‘real people, real needs’ underscores how much refugees have lost and how much the humanitarian community must do to help them,” said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a message for the Day observed yesterday.

Dubai, June 21: Kuwait is toughening its stance against expatriate workers and is likely to arrest and accordingly deport close to one lakh expatriates for being registered with bogus companies.

Fruit and Jelly Trifle

Ingredients :
100 gms orange jelly
200 gms fresh cream
½ slice any sponge cake
450 gms fruit cocktail
3 tbsp powdered sugar
2 tsp orange squash
½ tsp lemon juice
a few drops orange essence
a few drops orange colouring

For garnishing :
Orange wafers

Method :
Melt the jelly in 2½ teacups of boiling water.
Cool and add the orange squash.
Pour a little jelly in a 175 mm (7″) diameter sandwich cake tin and put to set in the refrigerator.
Drain the fruit and keep aside the syrup.
Beat the cream with the sugar until it becomes thick.

Almond Kulfi

Ingredients :

14 oz condensed milk
24 oz ecaporated milk
8 oz cool whip whipping cream
1 cup peeled almonds
pinch of saffron
¼ tsp powdered cardamom
½ cup pista chopped

Method :

Grind almond with 14 oz evaporated milk
Mix all above ingredients except pista in a big bowl, beat it for 2 to 5 minutes, so the kulfi comes very soft.
Pour the mixture in a big square dish
Sprinkle the chopped almonds over it and freeze for 8 to 10 hrs.
Cut it and ready to serve.

New Delhi, June 19: Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh’s humorous streak has often been compared to comedy king Govinda, but the young actor says “there can only be one Govinda” in the industry.

“I have often been compared to Govinda. One needs to understand it’s one of the biggest compliments anyone can ever give me. But there can only be one Govinda,” Riteish told IANS in an interview.

Lieberman rejects settlement freeze

Jeruselam, June 18: Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli foreign minister, has said his country could not accept a “complete” freeze on settlement building in the West Bank, despite US calls to do so.

Lieberman rejected a renewed call by Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, to halt construction on Palestinian land, following talks between the two in Washington on Wednesday.

“We cannot accept this vision about an absolutely complete freezing of settlements,” he told a news conference.
