Supreme Court Justice T.S.Thakur Tuesday said he was amused when his staff asked him when he was going to Varanasi for the Ganga cleaning as Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti wanted to accompany him, and told them to tell her he was merely hearing the matter in court.

He said his office received a call from the minister’s office saying she had has cancelled all her programmes to be with Justice Thakur when he goes to Varanasi for Ganga cleaning programme, and sought to know his schedule.

10 killed in Ukraine violence

At least 10 civilians were killed and 13 injured Tuesday when a shell hit a passenger bus in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. at a checkpoint fortified by Ukrainian forces near Volnovakha town, said Elena Davydovska-Malutina, a spokesperson for the Donetsk Regional Administration, Xinhua reported.

She said the shell came from the insurgent-controlled Dokuchaevsk town, adding that all the injured people were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Suspended Ajmal to undergo `official` biomechanics test on Jan 24 in Chennai

Suspended Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal will undergo an official biomechanics test in order to rectify his illegal bowling action in an Indian laboratory on Jan 24, said a PCB spokesman. In an attempt to get clearance from the International Cricket Council (ICC) on his bowling action, Ajmal had expressed his desire to appear for the test in England. However, the ICC has asked him to undergo the formal test in their accredited laboratory in the Indian city of Chennai, the Dawn reported. According to the report, Ajmal could face a one-year suspension from the game if he fails the test.

Congress leader Ajay Maken, who was on Tuesday named the party campaign committee chief for the Delhi assembly elections, said his party was the only “trusted and tested” option against the AAP, which was “trusted” but not “tested”.

The pharmaceutical solutions division of $750 million conglomerate Piramal Enterprises Limited (PEL) Tuesday said it is planning to invest $40 million on new equipment and modern technologies.

BJP had most crorepati lawmakers in 2013 Delhi assembly

Of the outgoing legislators of the 2013 Delhi assembly, the BJP had the largest number of 30 crorepatis among the 31 elected, as well as the highest number of MLAs with criminal cases registered at 17, according to the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Of the 28 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, 12 were crorepatis while three had criminal cases, ADR said quoting from criminal, financial and other background details of MLAs in the 2013 elctions.

Of the eight Congress MLAs, seven were crorepatis, while two had criminal cases against them.

SC asks Centre, states to list out steps to curb leprosy

Supreme Court today asked the Centre and state governments to apprise it of steps taken to eradicate and curb leprosy, saying it was their responsibility to curb the spread of the disease which is curable.

A bench comprising justices Dipak Misra and Prafulla C Pant sought responses from the Union Health Ministry and state administrations within four weeks.

The bench then fixed March 16 for hearing the PIL filed by advocate Pankaj Sinha in his personal capacity.

SC asks Centre to respond on clinical trial of vaccines

Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to file its response giving details like process of taking consent of persons on whom clinical trial of cervical cancer prevention vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix, have been carried out.

A bench of justices Dipak Misra and Prafulla C Pant asked the Centre to also indicate who would be liable to pay compensation to the persons if the clinical trial of the vaccination caused adverse impact.

Study shows 80 percent of adult internet users own smartphones

A new research has revealed that around 80 percent of adult internet users own a smartphone.

According to Tech Crunch, the research out from the GlobalWebIndex indicates that in a survey of 170,000 adult internet users across 32 markets, only 9 percent report having a smartwatch, and 7 percent said they owned smart wristbands.

However, statistics suggest that the usage of PCs is still high with 91 percent of all online adult using computers.

An investigation has found that certain photographs on Instagram’s private accounts were accessible to anyone with the right link.

According to The Verge, the bug, which was closed as a result of Quartz’s work, meant that photos posted to a public Instagram account would remain available even after the account was made private.

Facebook is the leader of social media, says a new survey, adding that the social networking site has also made inroads into becoming the popular choice among the elderly.

The findings of a survey by a US-based global thinktank Pew Research Centre that involved 1,597 internet users revealed that 71 percent of US adults were hooked to Facebook in 2014 – up significantly from 63 percent in 2013, Forbes magazine reported.

It also showed that 56 percent of Facebook users are in the age bracket of 65 years and older.

E-commerce major Flipkart on Tuesday said it aims to help over 10,000 sellers generate business worth Rs 10 lakh through its platform this year.

“In 2014, Flipkart helped over 2,000 sellers become millionaires through Flipkart sales. December 2014 alone saw over 500 sellers doing an average business of Rs 10 lakh each, while 50 sellers did an average of Rs 1 crore each,” Flipkart said in a statement.

Cipla moves HC against restraint on its Indacaterol-based drug

Cipla on Tuesday moved the Delhi High Court challenging its order temporarily restraining it from manufacturing or selling any drug containing the chemical Indacaterol, used for treating chronic respiratory disease, till it obtains a compulsory license for the medicine.

The matter was mentioned before a bench of Justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Sanjeev Sachdeva who directed that the plea be listed before the appropriate bench tomorrow.

The petition which has been settled by senior advocate Pratibha Singh was mentioned before the bench by advocate Bitika Sharma.

Life insurance major LIC today said it has no plans of exiting LIC Nomura Mutual Fund Asset Management Company as well as reducing its holding in LIC Housing Finance.

“We are neither contemplating nor do we intend to review our present position in relation to LIC Nomura Mutual Fund Asset Management Company or LIC Housing Finance. The media reports yesterday to the contrary are speculative and do not represent the facts,” LIC said in a release issued here.

RBI against broad-basing CRR to include forex, gold

The RBI is against broad-basing CRR, the portion of total bank deposits kept with the Reserve Bank, to include forex and gold reserves as it would entail an additional burden on the lenders.

The Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) is currently at 4 percent and a study by Prof Errol D’Souza has proposed a Gold Monetisation Scheme, under which forex and gold reserves could be allowed as CRR up to 30 percent of the requirement.

‘Indian businesses most optimistic about economy in 2015’

Indian businesses have emerged as being the most optimistic about the economy for 2015, with 98 percent suggesting they are positive about the policies of the new government, way above the global average of 35 percent, says a report by Grant Thornton.

According to assurance, tax and advisory firm Grant Thornton’s International Business Report (IBR), 94 percent of Indian businesses are expecting an increase in revenues and 89 percent expect rise in profits in the next 12 months.

India’s trade deficit with China rose to $37.8 bn in 2014

India’s trade deficit with China rose to a whopping USD 37.8 billion last year even as bilateral trade picked up, totalling USD 70.59 billion, a year on year increase of 7.9 per cent.

According to annual figures released by China’s General Administration of Customs (GAC), the total trade volume went to USD 70.59 billion from last year’s USD 65.57, an increase of USD 5.02 billion amid increasing Chinese exports to India.

India-China trade hit all time high of USD 73.9 billion in 2011 but declined to USD 66.57 billion in 2012 and USD 65.49 billion in 2013.
