Pak to share proof of foreign elements behind terror

Islamabad, July 05: Pakistan will share with the international community the evidence of foreign elements supporting terrorists to destabilise the country, a foreign ministry official said on Saturday.

“We have gathered proofs of some anti-Pakistan foreign elements supporting terrorists in our tribal areas to destabilise Pakistan and we would share it with the concerned countries at international level, foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit was quoted as saying by the Online news agency.

British Islamic group plans coup in Pakistan: report

London, July 05: An Islamic militant group based in Britain plans to overthrow the Pakistani government, a British media report said on Sunday.

Followers of the fundamentalist group Hizb ut-Tahrir have called for a “bloodless military coup” in Islamabad and the creation of a caliphate in which strict Islamic laws would be rigorously enforced, The Sunday Times reported.

The group is believed to have been set up in Pakistan in the early 1990s by Imtiaz Malik, a British-born Pakistani who may still be secretly operating as its leader in the country.

SKorea says NKorean missiles can hit key targets

Seoul, July 05: The ballistic missiles that North Korea test-fired this weekend were likely capable of striking key government and military facilities in South Korea, a defense official said Sunday, amid growing concerns over Pyongyang’s firepower.

North Korean state media did not mention the launches but boasted that the country’s military could impose “merciless punishment” on those who provoke it.

Pyongyang launched seven missiles into waters off its east coast Saturday in a show of force that defied U.N. resolutions and drew international condemnation.

Srinagar, July 05: In a confidential report, Jammu & Kashmir Police has accused moderate Hurriyat Conference leader Shabir Ahmed Shah of having links with Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

In the report to the state home department, the police have suggested some pro-active measures to curb the anti-national activities of separatist leaders and also slapped the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against pro-Pakistan leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Morality can’t be a ground to deprive fundamental rights: HC

New Delhi, July 05: The Delhi High Court has ruled a person cannot be deprived of his fundamental rights because of public disapproval of his acts on moral grounds and constitutional morality must dominate over public morality.

“Moral indignation, howsoever, strong, is not a valid basis for overriding individual’s fundamental rights and privacy. In our scheme of things, constitutional morality must outweigh the argument of public morality, even if it be the majoritarian view,” a two-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice A P Shah said.

232 posts of high court judges vacant

New Delhi, July 05: Even as nearly 40 lakh cases are pending, the various high courts in the country are short of 232 judges, according to a latest estimate.

As per June, 2009 estimate, the 21 high courts in the country have a total sanctioned strength of 886 judges. But the actual working strength is 654 judges.

The Allahabad High Court, which has the maximum number of sanctioned strength of 160 judges in the country, has 72 vacancies.

At present, proposals for appointment of 42 judges in various high courts are under consideration by the government, official sources said.

UAE charity to build orphanage in Kerala

Abu Dhabi, July 05: A United Arab Emirates (UAE) based charity plans to build an orphanage in the southern Indian state of Kerala, WAM news agency reported.

The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) will build a three-storey orphanage in the state. The project is part of its efforts to deliver social care to orphans, which are one of the most vulnerable segments in the community.

A visiting team of the RCA laid down the foundation stone of the facility that will accommodate 150 orphans who will also be imparted educational and professional training.

Calif. regulators warn of pot’s cancer capability

San Francisco, July 05: It might take Californians a puff or two to get their heads around an apparent contradiction recently enshrined in state law. The same marijuana smoke that doctors can recommend to ease cancer patients’ suffering must soon come with a warning saying it causes the disease.

State environmental regulators last month voted to place marijuana smoke on its list of hundreds of substances known to cause cancer. The decision could lead to warning signs in medical marijuana dispensaries and labels on packaged pot within a year.

New Delhi, July 05: A Delhi court has sought response from the family of an undertrial, who died under ‘mysterious’ circumstances in Tihar jail, after the CBI filed a closure report in the five-year-old case.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate RK Tripathi issued notice to Bilkis Begum, widow of deceased Mobin alias Momin (35) as the probe agency claimed that investigations did not corroborate the allegation that he was murdered.

Reformists resist Iranian government pressure

Tehran, July 05: The son of an Iranian revolutionary icon called on parliament to dismiss president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from his post, as the country’s conservative political establishment upped pressure Sunday on the reformists.

Ali Reza Beheshti, 47, a close Mousavi ally and son of one of the main leaders of the 1979 Islamic revolution, urged the parliament to reverse the election results, saying that “people expect their representatives to represent them and not to defend authorities by any means.”

Autopsy shows Ranbir shot from close range, bore torture marks

Uttarakhand, July 05: The body of Ranbir Singh, gunned down by Uttarakhand police in an alleged fake encounter, bore 12 marks of bullets fired from close range and 27 other injuries showing that he may have been tortured, according to an autopsy report.

Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank had on Saturday ordered a CB-CID probe into the killing of 22-year-old Singh, an MBA qualified from Uttar Pradesh who police claimed was shot dead on Friday in an encounter after he fled with a sub-inspector’s revolver, but his family on Sunday demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident.

New immigration law in the offing

New Delhi, July 05: A draft of a new immigration law has been prepared by the ministry of overseas Indian affairs, which will now initiate consultations with law and home ministries to finalise the document before tabling it in Parliament.

The draft was prepared after a need was felt to have a new immigration regulation law in the wake of changing global circumstances and growing incidents of Indians being exploited in absence of a more regulative legislation with strictpenal provisions.

BSF investigates blasts near Attari border

Attari (Punjab), July 05: The Border Security Force (BSF) is investigating two blasts that occurred in a village along the fenced border between India and Pakistan Saturday night.

BSF officials said two shells landed on the Indian side of the border in paddy fields of Dande village near the Attari-Wagah land border joint check post, 30 km from Amritsar city.

‘Villagers told our officials that two projectiles landed in the paddy fields last night,’ a BSF official, who visited the spot, told IANS.

India to prepare new rules to save its coastline

New Delhi, July 05: India is set to prepare new rules to save its 7,517 km coastline after deciding to let a controversial notification under attack from the fishing community to lapse.

The decision came after Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh told a delegation of fishermen here Thursday that existing regulations that date from 1991 would not be changed without consulting them. The fishermen’s objection was to the draft of the coastal management zone (CMZ) notification of 2008 which they alleged would displace their settlements along the beaches and halt fishing near the coast.

Hindustan Times contacted Liberhan following a revelation by advocate Anupam Gupta, the commission counsel between 1999 and 2007 that the judge was not even in favour of issuing summons to Advani for appearing before the commission.
