Trust factor: Easier for corporates to fund political parties

New Delhi, July 07: Donations from business houses to political parties through “electoral trusts” would be cent per cent exempt from tax, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in his Budget Speech on Monday.

Donations to parties are already tax-free. The trust route will provide an alternative to corporate houses that wish to finance polls, but don’t want to be identified with a party.

“It is a positive move to ensure transparency in funding political parties,” said former Reserve Bank of India governor Bimal Jalan.

Software engineer from AP shot at in South Africa

Hyderabad, July 07: An Indian software engineer from Andhra Pradesh was shot at by unidentified assailants in South Africa.

B Kiran, a native of Arepalli village near Warangal, was attacked in Johannesburg last Thursday while returning from work, his father B Shankaraiah said on Tuesday.

Two bullets hit Kiran, who was admitted to a hospital and is out of danger now, he said.

Kiran, who has been working in South Africa for the past two years, stayed with his parents last month and left for Johannesburg on June 27, he said.

Obama, Putin meet at last, exchange pleasantries

Moscow, july 07: President Barack Obama and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have shaken hands, commencing a first-time meeting that each said he hoped could ease relations between Washington and Moscow.

Obama showed up at Putin’s home on a clear, sunny day Tuesday morning, thanking his host for arranging the more pleasant weather after several days of cool, rainy conditions in Moscow. He told Putin he “appreciated you taking the time to meet with me,” and said he believes the two countries can deal with each other “with mutual respect and consultation.”

Over 4 lakh people affected by floods in Assam

Guwahati, July 07: Over 4 lakh people have been displaced in floods triggered by heavy rainfall in Assam.

The flood situation in Assam is critical with the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries flowing above the danger mark.

Flooding in the past one week has marooned more than 500 villages in the four upper Assam districts of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat and Naogaon.

Central Assam’s Morigaon, lower Assam’s Barpeta, Guwahati (Kamrup district), Bongaigaon, Dhubri and Baksa have also been affected by floods.

Senior officers on the Indo-Pak border believe that the three rockets fired at the border, two of which landed 2km inside Indian territory at Dande and Beharwal villages in Amritsar district on Saturday night, were either the work of the Pakistani Army or the Taliban. The rockets bore the marks of a Pakistani ordnance factory, the officers said.

Fresh protest erupts in China’s Xinjiang region

Xinjiang, July 07: Ethnic Uighurs scuffled with armed police Tuesday in a fresh protest in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang, where at least 156 people have been killed and more than 1,400 people arrested in the worst ethnic violence there in decades.

Most of the group of about 200 Uighurs were women protesting the arrests of their husbands in the massive crackdown on members of the Muslim minority by Chinese authorities since the violence was sparked Sunday in the Xinjiang provincial capital.

SKorea says suspect North Korean ship likely home

Seoul, July 07: A North Korean ship tracked by the U.S. Navy because it was suspected of carrying illicit cargo has likely arrived back home after reversing course without delivering its load, a South Korean official said Tuesday.

A U.S. admiral said the reversal demonstrates the success of U.N. sanctions aimed at punishing the communist nation for its May 25 nuclear test and curbing any of its efforts to export military technology.

Sarabjit’s new lawyer to file fresh mercy plea

Islamabad, July 07: The lawyer of Sarabjit Singh, the Indian on a death row in Pakistan, will file a fresh mercy petition before the country’s president on Wednesday.

Counsel Owais Sheikh will file the plea before President Asif Ali Zardari in the wake of the Pakistan Supreme Court dismissing his appeal against capital punishment. The petition seeking clemency will include a letter addressed to Zardari by Sarabjit.

13 injured in clashes, grenade attack in Kashmir

Srinagar, July 07: At least 13 persons, including four policemen, were injured in a grenade attack by suspected militants at a police party and clashes with securitymen here today, official sources said.

Three policemen were among five persons who were critically injured when suspected militants lobbed a grenade at the police party, engaged in restoring law and order at Gawkadal which witnessed violence in protest against a student going missing four days back.

Chicken Pockets

Ingredients:
1 1/4 cup – flour
1/2 cup – butter
1/3 cup – cream cheese
1 – egg yolk
salt and pepper
For the Filling:
1 cup – finely chopped chicken pieces
1 – onion
1 tbsp – parsley
1 tbsp – olives
salt, pepper and mustard to taste
mayonnaise

Method

1.Combine flour, butter, cream cheese, egg yolk, salt and pepper. Chill.
2.Roll out and cut into 2” squares.
3.Spread a tsp. of filling on each square, pull corners together and seal.
4.Place on an ungreased baking tray.
5.Bake at 200°C for 12-15 mins. till golden brown.
For the Filling:

Cheese Pops

Ingredients:
3/4 cup – butter
1/2 cup – sifted flour
1/2 cup – water
2 – eggs
3 tbsps – grated cheese
2 tbsps – minced onion
1 tsp – salt
1/4 tsp – pepper
1/2 tsp – mustard

Method

1. Heat water together with butter till the water boils and the butter melts.
2.Add the sifted flour, and using a wooden spoon, beat well over gentle heat till it forms a ball. Take off the fire.
3.Add the eggs, one by one, beating very well.
4.Add the grated cheese, minced onion, salt, pepper and mustard.
5.Shape into small balls.
6.Deep fry in hot oil. Serve hot.

The late-night “fight club” at the Corpus Christi State School — orchestrated, authorities say, for the entertainment of those responsible for protecting the students — was uncovered in March after the images were found on a lost cell phone.

Big push for rural development projects in Union Budget

New Delhi, July 06: Giving a push to its rural development projects, government on Monday announced a 144 per cent jump in the allocation for the flagship job guarantee scheme, NREGA, and 45 per cent hike for the Bharat Nirman programme that seeks to improve infrastructure in villages.

Presenting the 2009-10 Budget, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced an allocation of Rs 39,100 crore for NREGA for 2009-10, an increase of 144 per cent over 2008-09.

Car bomb in Iraq wounds 10, policeman shot

Baghdad, July 06: A car bomb wounded 10 civilians in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul Monday, and gunmen shot dead a traffic policeman, in further violence there after the withdrawal of U.S. troops from cities.

Grenade attacks Sunday killed a policeman and wounded many other people in what seemed like an attempt by insurgents to take advantage of the U.S. absence to ramp up violence in their last urban holdout.

Van with detonators goes missing in Maoist den in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh, July 06: A private van loaded with detonators for industrial use went missing in the Maoist stronghold of Bastar in Chhattisgarh Sunday, leaving police clueless.

“Two Mahindra Max pickup vans loaded with detonators were going from Raipur to Kirandul town in Dantewada district’s iron ore rich Bailadila area when one of them went missing somewhere in Bastar district. A search drive has been launched to locate the vehicle,” Praveer Das, Bastar district superintendent of police, told IANS.

Pak SC rejects pleas against Saeed release

Islamabad, July 06: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday rejected on technical grounds two petitions by the federal and Punjab governments challenging the release of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Mohd Saeed from house arrest, prompting authorities to announce they will file fresh pleas.

Saeed is a key accused in the Mumbai attacks.

The petitions submitted on Saturday though the office of the Supreme Court registrar had not completed formalities for them to be taken up by a bench. The petitions were rejected due to technical flaws, sources said.

Defence budget hike largest in India’s history

New Delhi, July 06: The Indian armed forces got a 34 per cent hike in the defence budget, the largest ever in the country’s history. The hike will help the Indian armed forces pay for new hardware acquisitions this year including a $ 1.2 billion hike in the refit cost of the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov for the navy, artillery for the army and transport aircraft for the IAF besides a slew of coastal defence systems. The budget is also expected to pay the arrears for the sixth Pay Commission.

NKorean launches maybe included new Scud : Report

Seoul, July 06: A barrage of ballistic missiles that North Korea test-fired over the weekend may have included a new type of Scud missile with an extended range and improved accuracy that poses a threat to Japan, a South Korean newspaper reported Monday.

$400m debt killed Michael Jackson, says friend

London, July 06: Lou Ferrigno, the “Incredible Hulk” star who was training Michael Jackson for his gruelling 50-date London tour, has claimed the singer was killed by the weight of his $400 million debt.

He said the only reason Jackson, who died last month in Los Angeles, was going back on stage was to clear his debt.

“He was under tremendous stress, so much (that) I think it killed him. He was $400 million in debt. In the past he had backed out of doing live shows but this time he was under the gun. The debts put a huge strain on him,” mirror.co.uk quoted Ferrigno as saying.

Mexican ruling party admits defeat in legislative elections

Mexico City, July 06: The ruling National Action Party (PAN) of Mexico late Sunday admitted defeat in the country’s legislative elections.

“We recognise the election results and congratulate the Institutional Revolutionary Party with becoming the largest party in the Chamber of Deputies,” PAN Chairman German Martinez told reporters.

PRI Chairwoman Beatriz Paredes pointed out that the result of the vote “confirms that Mexico is a country that wants new proposals and new solutions”.

Caffeine reverses memory loss?

Washington, July 06: Caffeine given daily to ageing mice with Alzheimer’s reversed their memory loss, says a new study.

The new findings provide evidence that caffeine could be a viable ‘treatment’ for established Alzheimer’s disease, and not simply a protective strategy,” said study author Gary Arendash, University of South Florida (USF).

“That’s important because caffeine is a safe drug for most people, it easily enters the brain, and it appears to directly affect the disease process,” he added.
