Kandhamal riot victims get Rs 1.05 cr

New Delhi, July 08: The government said it has disbursed Rs 1.05 crore as assistance among 35 families affected during last year’s communal violence in Kandhamal district of Orissa.

Under the Central Scheme of ‘Assistance To Victims Of Terrorist and Communal Violence’, which came into effect from April 1, 2008, an amount of Rs 3 lakh is given to the next of kin of the deceased, a home ministry spokesperson said.

The Central scheme aims at providing assistance to the next of kin of victims of terrorist, including militancy and insurgency, and communal violence.

New Delhi, July 08: Former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad came under fire from all quarters for allegedly “fudging” figures to show a turnaround in the railway accounts during his five-year tenure.

Current railway minister Mamata Banerjee’s decision to come out with a white paper of last year’s railway accounts provided fodder to the opposition who demanded it should be tabled in Parliament during the winter session. Lalu, however, challenged the move.

Over 1,400 arrested in China as fresh protests erupt

Urumqi(China), July 07: Fresh unrest broke out today in China’s restive northwestern region of Xinjiang, where at least 156 people died in the worst communal flare up in decades leading to the arrest of over 1,400 people, including 55 women, in a massive crackdown.

A crowd of around 300 people staged a fresh protest in the regional capital Urumqi as a group of Beijing-based foreign journalists arrived in the city for reporting on the deadly riots between the ethnic Muslim Uygur community and the majority Han Chinese.

Court frames charges of extortion against Abu Salem

New Delhi, July 07: A Delhi court today framed charges of extortion and criminal conspiracy against underworld don Abu Salem, paving the way for his trial in a 7-year-old case.

Salem, who was brought to the capital from Bhopal amid tight security arrangements, was produced before chief metropolitan magistrate Kaveri Baweja who framed criminal charges against the extradited gangster.

Arvind Shukla, counsel for Salem, claimed that there was insufficient evidence to frame charges against the accused.

Mumbai, July 07: Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kambakkht Ishq has registered a stupendous opening grossing over Rs 46 crore at the box office in its opening weekend, Eros International, the film’s co-producer and distributor has said.

The film, directed by debutant Sabbir Khan with Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor in the lead roles has grossed over Rs 32 crore in India and Rs 14 crore overseas.

The film, which released worldwide on July 3, has also touched the number eight position in UK in the same period.

Pranab meets India Inc, says deficit a strategy to spur growth

New Delhi, July 07: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said the government has taken the calculated risk of high fiscal deficit to help stimulate growth, but would strive hard to bring it down to 4 per cent in the next two fiscals.

Noting that a fiscal deficit of 6.8 per cent was on the higher side, the minister said: “The global economic slowdown is likely to continue in the current financial year… (but) we must come back to growth path as fast as possible.”

“No doubt, I have taken a risk… We cannot say we are out of the economic slowdown as yet,” he said.

Grenade attack in Afghanistan kills 1, wounds 28

Kabul, July 07: A hand grenade thrown at a police vehicle in eastern Afghanistan exploded in a crowd Tuesday, killing one civilian and wounding 28 others, officials said, a day after 10 foreign troops died amid escalating violence across the country.

The grenade attack in Khost province targeted policemen passing through the provincial capital, but the victims were mostly civilians, said Tahir Khan Sabari, the provincial deputy governor.

Four police and five children were among those wounded, said Abdul Majid Mangal, the deputy hospital director.

India not Pakistan’s enemy, says Miliband

Washington, July 07: India is not a threat to Pakistan, and New Delhi has “better things to do” than end up in a standoff with its neighbour, British foreign secretary David Miliband has said.

Shopian rape victims’ kin reject J&K HC order

Srinagar, July 07: The families of Shopian rape victims on Tuesday rejected a court order to exhume their bodies for a fresh autopsy.

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court had ordered that bodies of the Shopian rape victims be exhumed for DNA test and a fresh post-mortem examination.

But the victims’ families said it was unacceptable to them. They want that the police officials and doctors who fudged the autopsy report be punished first.

The Shopian coordination committee spearheading the campaign for justice made this announcement in Srinagar on Tuesday.

34 per cent hike in defence budget

New Delhi, July 07: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee hiked this year’s (2009-10) defence budget by a generous 34 per cent, a thumping allocation for the defence establishment.

From the soldier at the borders to retired veterans, from India’s armament laboratories to its war chest for foreign weapons, everything stands to gain.

Overall, defence has been allocated Rs 1,41,703 crore this year – a good 34 per cent increase over last year.

While the defence ministry spent Rs 41,000 crore last year for new equipment purchases, it has been given a generous Rs 54,824 crore this year.

Obama: US, Russia not destined to be adversaries

Moscow, July 07: President Barack Obama, working to drastically reshape U.S. relations with a skeptical Russia, said Tuesday the two countries are not “destined to be antagonists.”

“The pursuit of power is no longer a zero-sum game,” Obama said, speaking in the Russian capital to graduates of the New Economic School but also hoping to reach the whole nation. “Progress must be shared.”

Obama used his speech to further define his view of the United States’ place in the world and, specifically, to argue that his country shares compelling interests with Russia.

Taiwan rejects China air route request

Taiwan, July 07: Taiwan rejected on Tuesday a Chinese request to allow commercial planes to fly over the Taiwan Strait dividing the island and China to help ease commercial air congestion between the two sides.

The Defense Ministry said commercial planes should continue to fly either north or south of the 100-mile (160-kilometer) wide strait, reserving the area to the east of the median line for Taiwanese warplane training.

Slain SC serial killing suspect had long rap sheet

South Carolina, July 07: The serial killer who terrorized a South Carolina community by shooting five people to death before police killed him Monday was a career criminal paroled just two months ago, authorities said.

Patrick Burris, 41, was shot to death by officers investigating a burglary complaint at a home in Gastonia, N.C., 30 miles from where the killing spree started June 27. Ballistics tests showed his gun matched the one used to kill residents in and around Gaffney over six days last week, said State Law Enforcement Division Chief Reggie Lloyd.

HC to decide on ownership of Ramjanmabhumi

Lucknow, July 07: The Babri Masjid demolition has come to haunt the BJP yet again. The matter will be taken up in the Allahabad High Court on Tuesday.

The court had earlier ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to submit the title deed relating to the disputed land.

The state chief secretary and the principal secretary (Home) will also depose in court on Tuesday. The court hearing comes in the wake of Justice Liberhan submitting his report after a 17-year-long probe.
