Dhaka to develop two ports as regional trade hubs

Dhaka, July 8 : Bangladesh will offer Chittagong and Mongla ports for use to its South Asian neighbours, developing them as regional trade hubs, a minister has said.

“There is no reason why cotton from Pakistan could not be directly brought or trucks laden with goods from Nepal could not directly be imported to Bangladesh or why north east Indian states will remain landlocked when we have the Chittagong port,” Commerce Minister, Col. (retd.) Faruk Khan said Tuesday.

Over 200,000 people displaced in Somalia conflict

Somalia, July 08: The number of people displaced by the escalating conflict in Mogadishu has reached 204,000, making it the biggest exodus from the troubled Somali capital since the Ethiopian intervention in 2007, the UN refugee agency has said. The eight-week-long offensive led by the Al-Shabab and Hisb-ul-Islam militia against government forces “is having a devastating impact on the city s population, causing enormous suffering and massive displacement”, Ron Redmond, spokesman of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told a news briefing in Geneva Tuesday.

Heavy rains in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 08: Normal life was thrown out of gear in the financial capital today by heavy rains that led to waterlogging in several areas and hit movement of air and rail traffic.

The metropolis experienced incessant downpour since the wee hours inundating many areas across the city, civic officials said.

Traffic at the airport was affected with the Air Traffic Control stopping runway operations due to poor visibility at around 0946 hours, a spokesperson of the Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) said.

Australian premier rapped for lobbying pope

Melbourne, July 08: Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd should not be pressuring Pope Benedict XVI to make Australian nun Mary MacKillop a saint, a prominent Jesuit priest said Wednesday.

Frank Brennan joined other leading Catholics in criticising Rudd for arranging a meeting Wednesday with the pope at which Rudd said he would encourage the pontiff to have MacKillop canonised. “I think it would not be appropriate for him to attempt to lobby,” Father Brennan told the national broadcaster ABC.

Update: Mumbai doc a habitual rapist: Police

Mumbai, july 08: The Mumbai doctor arrested on rape charges on Tuesday will be produced in court on Wednesday.

Police suspect the 30-year-old orthopaedic doctor has been a habitual offender. Not just because he allegedly raped the victim several times, but because the police recovered nude photos of at least nine other girls from his laptop.

Rahul Deswal, the RMO of St George’s Hospital in Mumbai has been accused of rape by his junior, a third-year medico.

He had even promised to marry the victim in exchange for her silence.

Google unveil plans for light-weight open source operating system

New Delhi, July 08: Google have announced their plans of creating an operating system which will be an extension of their browser, Chrome.

“Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks,” a post on the official Google blog said.

“Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010.”

The post said the company is already in talks with partners, and reached out to the open source community to help them build the system.

Ramdev to challenge HC order on gay sex

New Delhi, July 08: Baba Ramdev will on Wednesday approach the Supreme Court to challenge the Delhi High Court’s recent verdict on homosexuality. He has been openly critical of the court order legalising gay sex among consenting adults.

The yoga guru believes the judgement will have an adverse effect on the moral and cultural values of Indian society at large. He will also pray for the stay on the HC verdict till the final disposal of the petition.

Ramdev has been pleading that gay sex violates the law of nature.

MJ’s death certificate ‘defers’ cause

Los Angeles, July 08: The authorities in Los Angeles issued Michael Jackson’s death certificate. As the mystery shrouded the reason of his death, the certificate mentioned “deferred” on the space provided to mention the popstar’s cause of death.

Moreover, the death certificate listed Forest Lawn Cemetery as a temporary burial place for Jackson. According to reports, Jackson’s body was yet to be buried, while the place and the time were still unknown.

The final burial day was also still tentative and the location was yet to be known.

UN relief chief seeks more aid for refugees in Pakistan

New York, July 08: The United Nations top humanitarian relief official has sought more international aid for the internationally displaced persons (IDPs) in Pakistan resulting due to military operation against the Taliban in the Swat Valley and adjoining areas of the country.

“While it is not the largest crisis in the world, needs in Pakistan are the most immediate of any crisis in the world. The upcoming monsoon season makes meeting those needs an even more urgent priority,” said John Holms, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

Medical student alleges rape by Mumbai doctor

Mumbai, July 08: A third year MBBS student from Mumbai’s St George Hospital has accused Dr Rahul Deswal, a junior doctor at the same hospital of raping her.

Dr Rahul was a senior of the victim and was on deputation to St George Hospital while he was completing his final year of Master of Surgery.

Karnataka Minister in trouble for rebuking engineer

Bangalore, July 08: An assistant engineer of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike fainted and was hospitalised after a minister allegedly scolded him. There are also allegations that the minister hit the engineer.

The incident comes just days after an Andhra Pradesh MP slapped a bank manager.

Race a factor in cancer deaths gap: Study

Washington, July 08: African-Americans tend to die earlier from breast, ovarian and prostate cancer than patients of other races due to biological and genetic factors, not socioeconomic ones, a study said.

The analysis was the first to find that the disparities remain even when African-American patients receive identical medical treatment and other socioeconomic factors are controlled, said the authors of the study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

16 killed in fire mishap in cracker factory in TN

Madurai, July 08: Sixteen people were burnt to death and more than 25 others suffered serious injuries when a major fire raged through a fireworks factory and godown at Vadakkampatti near Madurai on Wednesday.

Eight persons died on the spot while others succumbed to the burn injuries either on way to or at hospitals, officials told PTI.

Eight fire tenders battled the fire for around four hours to control the raging blaze. It was brought under control at around 11 p.m.

New flu virus found at Canadian hog farm

Ottawa, July 08: A “novel” influenza type A virus was confirmed in two hog farm workers in the central Canadian province of Saskatchewan, according to health authorities who stressed the virus was “non-pandemic.”

“A novel non-pandemic influenza A virus has been confirmed in two hog farm workers in Saskatchewan and a third case is under investigation,” the provincial authorities said, noting the workers had fully recovered.

Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq said: “We are working closely with the province of Saskatchewan to learn as much as we can about this new flu virus.
