Imran, Reham face wrath of Peshawar terror-hit school parents

Imran Khan and his newly-wed wife were today booed by grieving parents of the victims of the Peshawar school massacre, accusing him of politicising the tragedy and being busy with marriage preparations.

The protest took place when the Pakistani cricketer- turned-politician along with his new wife Reham Khan arrived at the Army Public School to meet the students.

The parents of deceased students who lost their children in the school tragedy chanted “Go Imran Go” while holding placards rejecting Khan’s visit.

Munde’s death case: Accused driver appears in court

A taxi driver who has been accused of rash and negligent driving which led to the death of then union minister Gopinath Munde in June last year, appeared in a court here Wednesday.

Accused Gurvinder Singh, 32, appeared before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjay Khanagwal following a summons issued against him by the court Dec 5 last year.

The court posted the matter for April 8 for further hearing after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) supplied charge sheet and other documents related to the case to Singh.

The death of two persons who were summoned as accused along with Directors of Jharkhand Ispat Pvt Ltd R S Rungta and R C Rungta in a coal scam case, today came under scrutiny of the CBI which informed a special court that they were verifying facts regarding their demise.

A new study has revealed that cancer deaths will be eliminated for all except for the people over 80 years of age by 2050.

According to the experts, if recent gains in prevention and treatment carry on apace then it is possible to prevent further deaths and that UK was at a “special point in history” and could set a bold ambition to eradicate cancer-related mortality in people aged under 80 “during the course of the coming 20 to 30 years”, the Independent reported.

Higher sense of autonomy make toddlers smarter

Children with a higher sense of autonomy are likely to possess stronger mental skills, says a study.

Higher cognitive skills are found in the children of mothers who are consistently able to support the development of their baby’s sense of autonomy, the findings showed.

“We have shown that the child’s executive functioning is linked to the mother’s ability to support his or her autonomy,” said lead researcher Celia Matte-Gagne from the University of Montreal in Canada.

Two die of swine flu in Hyderabad; toll rises to 3 this year

Two deaths due to swine flu and other health problems have been reported here, a health official said on Wednesday.

A senior citizen (61-year-old) and a man in his 20s from the city were referred to the state-run Gandhi hospital during the last 48 hours, after being treated in private hospitals, where they succumbed soon after admission, according to Dr Narasimhulu, swine flu coordinator at the Gandhi hospital.

Earlier, a man had died of swine flu and other problems last week, he said.

Hyderabad eye institute achieves 20,000 corneal transplants

The L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) here has said it has become the first in the world to achieve 20,000 corneal transplants.

The not-for-profit and non-government institute crossed the landmark in the 25th year of establishment of its Ramayamma International Eye Bank, the largest eye bank in Asia.

The Cornea Centre of Excellence at LVPEI is the largest and one of the best in the world, institute officials said Wednesday.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan Wednesday felicitated the cornea and eye bank teams and commended LVPEI’s commitment to quality eye care.

The Beagle 2 Mars probe that went missing 11 years may have been found, it has been reported.

The UK Space Agency stated that they would provide an “update” about what happened to the doomed craft which tried to land on the red planet on Christmas Day 2003, the Daily Express reported.

However, experts with access to pictures from space claimed that they have seen images which suggested the Beagle 2 probe has been spotted.

A senior space scientist said NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) showed an object roughly the right shape and in the correct place to be the craft.

Pakistan court indicts Pervez Musharraf in murder case of Nawab Akbar Bugti

Pakistan’s former military ruler Pervez Musharraf was on Wednesday indicted by an anti-terrorism court in the murder case of Baloch nationalist leader Nawaz Akbar Khan Bugti, who was killed in a military operation.

The court in provincial capital Quetta charge-sheeted the 71-year-old leader and adjourned the hearing till February 4.

The judge said that the case would be heard on a daily basis from February 4 onward.

Suspected terrorists held after Afghan police raid

A suicide bomber blew himself up and 17 suspects were detained after Afghan security forces launched an operation in the capital Kabul, police said on Wednesday morning.

“Following a tip-off, the Afghan National Police (ANP) carried out an operation in eastern Kabul at around 7.00 pm on Tuesday,” Xinhua reported.

After security forces entered the targeted house, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest, killing himself on the spot. The ANP found numerous other suicide jackets and detained 17 suspects, the Kabul police said in a statement.

Pakistan’s first-ever high security prison, where dreaded terrorists will be kept, is ready for inauguration in Sahiwal in Punjab province.

The jail has been set up after militants staged spectacular jail-breaks in the previous year to set free hundreds of terrorists.

The jail, constructed on 98 acres with an estimated cost of Rs 930.206 million, will have capacity to hold 1,044 prisoners, the Dawn reported.

Lahore wedding hall collapse kills seven

At least seven people, including the bride, were killed when the roof of a wedding hall collapsed in Pakistan`s Lahore city, the media reported.

The roof came down when a wedding ceremony was on Tuesday night, Dawn online reported. The dead included another woman and two children. Twenty people were injured.

Police said the newly built wedding hall, inaugurated only four days ago, could not withstand the late night downpour and crumbled.

Sri Lanka’s new ruling coalition on Wednesday formed the government in a southeastern province after five members of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s alliance switched their allegiance to the new dispensation, in yet another blow to the besieged former president.

Harin Fernando, of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s United National Party (UNP), was today sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Uva province after he proved a majority in the council, said provincial Governor Nanda Mathew.

The province was earlier controlled by Rajapksa’s United People’s Freedom Allianc (UPFA).

Pak judge hearing Mumbai terror trial changed for 8th time

For the eighth time, the judge of the anti-terrorism court conducting the trial of seven Pakistani suspects charged with involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks was changed on Wednesday as the case was transferred to another court.

Judge Kausar Abbas Zaidi of the Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad, who had granted bail to Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi – the 2008 Mumbai terror attack mastermind – had been conducting the trial for the last three months.

Unemployed youth sets himself ablaze at Akali Dal rally

An unemployed youth Wednesday set himself afire at the rally venue of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab’s Muktsar district.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was present at the rally.

The youth – identified as Hitesh Kumar of Ferozepur district – attempted to immolate himself in the presence of thousands of people who had come for the rally on the occasion of the religious Maghi Mela in Muktsar district, about 250 km from here.

Police officials present at the venue and some other people immediately tried to put out the fire.

Himachal approves industrial proposals worth Rs.2,500 crore

Himachal Pradesh Wednesday approved industrial proposals amounting to approximately Rs.2,500 crore, a development that would provide employment opportunities to more than 7,800 people, an official said.

The state-level Single Window Clearance and Monitoring Authority, presided over by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, approved 28 new proposals. It also gave approval to expansion proposals of 32 existing units.

The police in China have arrested a woman after she severed her husband’s genital a second time and threw it out of the window of the hospital where he was admitted after she cut it the first time following the discovery that he had been unfaithful, media reports said Wednesday.

Fan Lung, father of five children, had used his wife’s mobile phone to send erotic messages to his 21-year-old lover, Zhang Hung, according to Chinese news portal Ying Xiang.

In a slip-up, Fan, 32, forgot to sign out of the account he was using to send the messages and his wife discovered his secret.
