Troops pile into China’s restive Urumqi, some calm returns

Urumqi (China), July 09: Vehicles packed with Chinese security forces rolled back into Urumqi on Thursday, but there were tentative signs of life returning to normal in the restive city, AFP reporters witnessed.

Long convoys of trucks emblazoned with slogans such as “Smash the separatists” and “Bring peace to the city” rumbled through the main streets of northwest Xinjiang’s regional capital, where at least 156 people died in unrest here on Sunday.

Cong, BJP bicker over MCD Games projects’ deadline

New Delhi, July 09: Congress councillors on Wednesday alleged that none of the Commonwealth Games projects under Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) would be able to meet their deadline due to the slow progress of work.

These include 16 multi-level parking sites and 24 conventional ones, beautification and streetscaping of roads, Chandni Chowk redevelopment plan among others.

Meanwhile, MCD commissioner KS Mehra said the civic body was carrying out its work on war footing and would finish all the projects before deadline.

Aarushi-Hemraj case: CBI to send affidavit to SC

New Delhi, July 09: Directed by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has undertaken an internal brainstorming exercise to submit an affidavit/status report in the Aarushi-Hemraj murder case within a month.

The 13-month-old case being probed by the CBI still remains unsolved.

Though the CBI is yet to receive the court’s order, the agency is expected to “submit the facts of the case and its findings so far”, said a senior agency official, who requested anonymity.

Aussie team in India to woo students, parents

Ahmedabad, July 09: With the recent attacks on Indians threatening to impact the flow of students into Australia this year, and in turn affect foreign revenue, a high-level delegation from down under is on a nation-wide tour to instill confidence among Indian students and parents.

Reports have suggested that a large number of students aspiring to go to Australia cancelled their plans in the wake of the recent attacks. The process of application for the January-February session starts in July. In the last 10 years the country has become a hub for Indian students.

Separatists call 3-day bandh in J&K

Srinagar, july 09: Separatist groups in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday called for a three-day shutdown in the Valley demanding the arrest of those involved in the killing of 20-year-old Israr Ahmad whose body was found on Wednesday.

Violent protests broke out in the city following the recovery of Ahmad’s partly decomposed body at Rainawari. Ahmad had been missing for four days.

As news of Israr’s death spread, protesters took to the streets, chanting slogans and pelting stones at police. The mob also set a couple of police vehicles on fire.

Worst could be over for India Inc, outlook brighter: Analysts

MJ memorial cost LA $1.4 million

Los Angeles,July 09:A whopping $1.4 million was spent during the memorial service of pop star Michael Jackson, city officials have revealed.

The amount was spent in providing security, controlling traffic and other services during the event.

Over 4,000 police officers had worked overtime to secure the memorial premises.

Judge thrashed in courtroom

New Delhi, July 09: In an unprecedented incident, a Delhi judge was physically assaulted on Wednesday by a group of lawyers inside his courtroom at Rohini district court complex, after he asked them not to interrupt the proceedings.

Additional District Judge (ADJ) Pankaj Gupta, who presides over a family court hearing matrimonial cases, was made to stand against the wall, slapped and beaten.

The “unidentified lawyers”, as the FIR put it who beat him up, also thrashed the court staff when they tried to stop the lawyers from reaching the judge on the dais.

Burger King ad draws flak from Hindus

Washington, July 09: A US-based Hindu advocacy group has asked American fast food chain Burger King to immediately remove an advertisement campaign featuring goddess Lakshmi, which it says is “offensive” to the people of the faith.

Washington-based Hindu American Foundation said Burger King is running a print advertisement in Spain that depicts an image of the goddess seated atop a meat sandwich and other foodstuffs with the catch phrase, A snack thats sacred, in Spanish.

No quick fix for India’s coastal security

Abortion pill used in a quarter of US abortions

Washington, July 09: Roughly a fourth of American women getting early abortions last year did so with drugs rather than surgery, statistics show, as a new study reported improved safety in using the so-called “abortion pill.”

Some experts predict the percentage of such “medical abortions,” which offer more privacy than surgical termination at an abortion clinic or hospital, will rise even more due to the new study.

House Dems eye surtax on wealthy for health bill

Washington, July 09: An income tax surcharge on highly paid Americans emerged as the leading option Wednesday night as House Democrats sought ways to pay for health care legislation that President Barack Obama favors, several officials said.

As discussed in the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, the surtax would apply to individuals with adjusted gross income of more than $200,000 and couples over $250,000, they added.

In addition, key lawmakers are expected to call for a tax or fee equal to a percentage of a worker’s salary on employers who do not offer health benefits.

US officials eye North Korea in cyber attack

Washington, July 09: U.S. authorities on Wednesday eyed North Korea as the origin of the widespread cyber attack that overwhelmed government Web sites in the United States and South Korea, although they warned it would be difficult to definitively identify the attackers quickly.

The powerful attack that targeted dozens of government and private sites underscored how unevenly prepared the U.S. government is to block such multipronged assaults.

New US envoy in India next week

Washington, July 09: The new US ambassador to India, Timothy Roemer, is expected to arrive in New Delhi sometime next week, at least a few days ahead of the visit of the secretary of state, Hillary Clinton.

The nomination of Roemer, 53, was confirmed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday. It now goes to the Senate floor, which is expected to formally confirm the nomination as early as this week.

Calif. drug dealer guilty of murdering 15-year-old

Washington, July 09: Marijuana dealer Jesse James Hollywood was convicted Wednesday of kidnapping and murdering a 15-year-old boy over an escalating drug debt, a crime that inspired the 2007 movie “Alpha Dog.”

After deliberating about four days, a Santa Barbara Superior Court jury also found Hollywood, 29, guilty of the special circumstance allegation of being a principal in a murder committed in the course of a kidnapping and being involved in a crime in which an assault weapon or machine gun was used, making him eligible for the death penalty.

Chinese troops flood streets after riots

Urumqi, China, July 09: Thousands of Chinese troops flooded into this city Wednesday to separate feuding ethnic groups after three days of communal violence left 156 people dead, and a senior Communist Party official vowed to execute those guilty of murder in the rioting in western China.

Long convoys of armored cars and green troop trucks with riot police rumbled through Urumqi, a city of 2.3 million people. Other security forces carrying automatic rifles with bayonets formed cordons to defend Muslim neighborhoods from marauding groups of vigilantes with sticks.

Iran president declares new era for country

Tehran, July 08: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sought to disperse the clouds of doubt surrounding his re-election in his first major television address. But even as he spoke, opponents went to their rooftops shouting “death to the dictator” — a sign of continuing defiance.

In his half-hour address late Tuesday, Ahmadinejad insisted that the June 12 elections were fair and that his government was legitimate. His staunch line gave no ground to opponents who claim the vote results were fraudulent and launched a wave of mass protests in recent weeks.

G8 sees continued perils for world economy

Rome, july 08: G8 leaders believe the world economy still faces “significant risks” and may need further help, according to summit draft documents that also reflect failure to agree climate change goals for 2050.

Discord over environmental measures was underlined by withdrawal from the meeting of Chinese President Hu Jintao, who returned to Beijing because of unrest in northwestern China in which 156 people have been killed.
