Clear evidence Pak planned, launched Mumbai attack: India

Mumbai, July 10: Slamming Pakistan for the expanding terrorist footprints on its soil, India has said it had clear evidence that the Mumbai attack was planned and launched by the western neighbour, and this had strained the peace process.

The Defence Ministry, in its annual report for 2008-09 released at New Delhi on Thursday, said: “The terrorist attack on Mumbai in November 2008 and the clear evidence that the attack was planned and launched by Pakistan have thereafter led to a pause in the (peace) process” between New Delhi and Islamabad.

Orissa schoolgirl meets G8 leaders

L’Aquila (Italy) July 10: Fourteen youngsters from countries attending the G8 Summit, including a schoolgirl from India, on Thursday appealed to their leaders to act fast on combating climate change and ensure high-quality education for children.

The representatives of the UNICEF Junior 8 (J8) met leaders of G8 countries and non G-8 nations invited to L’Aquila, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. They presented their recommendations at the meeting.

The 14 youngsters were chosen by their peers — 54 young delegates in the age group of 14 to 17.

Swine flu cases on rise, India’s tally hits 164

New Delhi, July 10: Six new cases of swine flu were reported on Thursday in the country, including three in the Capital, taking the total number of people infected with the influenza A(H1N1) virus to 164 so far, health officials said.

According to the Union Health Ministry, of the six new cases three are from Delhi and one each from Goa, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

Those detected for the flu on Thursday include a four-and-a-half year old girl and a 78-year-old woman.

“About 1,040 people have been tested so far, of whom 164 have tested positive for influenza A (H1N1),” a statement said.

Ahmedabad liquor death toll rises to 105

Ahmedabad, July 10: The death toll in one of Gujarat’s worst moonshine tragedies rose to 105 even as doctors in four hospitals were trying desperately to save scores of other critically ill patients, officials said Friday.

People began dying Monday after having consumed illicit liquor. By midnight Thursday, 105 lives had been lost.

Authorities said 149 patients admitted to the Civil Hospital, L.G. Hospital, Shardaben Hospital and V.S. Hospital were still critically ill.

The joint declaration of the world’s wealthiest and most industrialized countries (G8) and the emerging economies (G5) said: “We will resist protectionism and open markets for trade and investment. We reject all protectionist measures in trade and investment.”

Over 300 injured in China quake

Kunming (China), July 10 : More than 300 people were injured Thursday when a strong earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale jolted the Yunnan province in southwest China, officials said.

The injured were rushed to hospitals.

The local authorities said over 10,000 houses collapsed and about 30,000 houses were damaged in the six counties hit by the earthquake.

The quake occurred at 7.19 p.m., with the epicenter in the Guantun Township, some 200 km from the provincial city of Kunming, the China Earthquake Networks Centre said.

LAPD: Michael Jackson’s drug history to be probed

Los Angeles, July 10: Detectives investigating the death of Michael Jackson are looking at his prescription drug history and trying to talk with his numerous former doctors, the Los Angeles police chief said Thursday.

Chief William Bratton told CNN that police are waiting for the coroner’s report before ruling out any possibilities in their “comprehensive and far-reaching” investigation into the sudden death of the 50-year-old pop star two weeks ago.

The coroner’s report will determine the cause of death and hinges on time-consuming toxicology tests.

New Delhi, july 10: If watching actors smoke on screen attracts youngsters to smoking, playing team sports keeps them away from the butt, says a report in the latest issue of Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

The study said participation in team sports plays a protective role against established smoking, even in the face of exposure to smoking on screen. Parents, teachers, coaches should thus encourage youngsters to participate in team sports to minimise chances of their picking up the stick.

Worst violence since US pullback hits Iraq

Baghdad, July 10: Bombs killed nearly 60 people in Iraq on Thursday in the worst violence since U.S. combat troops withdrew from urban areas last week, and American forces released five Iranian officials suspected of aiding Shiite insurgents.

U.S. officials said they believe the Iranians, detained in northern Iraq in January 2007, had facilitated attacks on American-led forces but handed them over to the Iraqi government at its request because they were obliged to do so under a U.S.-Iraqi security agreement.

Manmohan meets Obama during G8 meeting

L’Aquila (Italy), July 10: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh briefly met with US President Barack Obama during the outreach meeting of G8 and G5 leaders at their summit here Thursday.

Both leaders shook hands and exchanged pleasantries, Indian officials said. No bilateral talks were held.

Obama and Manmohan Singh had a formal meeting in April on the sidelines of the G20 summit in London.

There was no formal meeting scheduled between Obama and Manmohan Singh here though top foreign ministry officials had maintained that they would be ‘in the same room at the same time’.

Pawar says India well-stocked for 13 months

New Delhi, July 10: Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said on Thursday the Centre has enough foodgrains to meet the country’s demand for 13 months but affirmed that the monsoon situation is improving “every alternate day”.

“I (have) about 13 months’ stock (of foodgrains) in the country’s kitty. Moreover, from October onward, I will get paddy from this year’s crop,” Pawar said in New Delhi on Thursday.

Kasab’s sea map produced in court

Mumbai, July 10: The map charting the sea route from Pakistan to Mumbai used by 26/11 terrorists was put on record in the special court on Thursday. The map, along with another one showing the route from Malabar Hill to Mahim, was recovered with 38 other articles inside a backpack allegedly belonging to Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, from the terrace of Cama Hospital by the police.

Thousands protest in Iran, defying crackdown vow

Tehran, July 10: Thousands of protesters streamed down avenues of the capital Thursday, chanting “death to the dictator” and defying security forces who fired tear gas and charged with batons, witnesses said.

Turning garbage bins into burning barricades and darting through choking clouds of tear gas, the opposition made its first foray into the streets in nearly two weeks in an attempt to revive mass demonstrations that were crushed in Iran’s postelection turmoil.

Chinese Prez vows crackdown on rioters

Urumqi, July 10: Chinese President Hu Jintao, in the wake of the worst communal bloodbath in the restive Xinjiang, has vowed to action on perpetrators of the riots that killed 156 people and cast a shadow on his pet concept of a ‘harmonious society.’

The Chinese president was also forced to skip the G-8 summit in Italy due to the occurrence of the riot.

Narendra Modi warns of stern action against culprits

Ahmedabad, July 10: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi said the state government had taken a serious view of the unfortunate hooch tragedy and warned that stern action would be taken against the culprits.

In a statement released tonight, Modi sympathised with the relatives and family members of those who died in the tragedy and appealed to the people to maintain peace in the city.

He said the state government is fully determined to get to the root cause of this tragedy and stern action would be taken against the culprits.

Infosys declares Q1 results, net profit falls by 5.33 pc

New Delhi, July 10: Infosys declared its first quarter results on Friday showing that there has been a five per cent fall over fourth quarter results of 2008-09.

The revenues are down 2.89 per cent quarter-on-quarter to Rs 5,472 crore while net profit fell by 5.33 per cent quarter-on-quarter to Rs 1,527 crore

The results were announced just a day after founder and former co-chairman Nandan Nilekani big goodbye to the IT giant.

The figures also indicate how badly the economic slowdown has hit the infotech sector.

Obama sees G8 climate progress, UN disagrees

L’Aquila (Italy), July 10: US President Barack Obama said on Thursday the world had made “important strides” towards arresting climate change by agreeing to limit warming, but UN chief Ban Ki-moon said it was simply not enough.

“This is politically and morally (an) imperative and historic responsibility … for the future of humanity, even for the future of the planet Earth,” said Ban.

Only Rs.37 a month for an Indian citizen’s healthcare

New Delhi, July 09: India spends a mere Rs.37 per head every month to provide healthcare facilities for its one billion plus citizens, a reply tabled in the Lok Sabha has revealed.

‘The per capita expenditure for the years 2006-07 to 2008-09 is in the range of Rs.300 to Rs. 450,’ Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said in a written reply. At the top end of the scale, this works out to Rs.37 a day.

Swine flu cases total in India stands at 158

New Delhi, July 09: Five new swine flu cases were reported in India Wednesday, taking the total number of people infected with the influenza A(H1N1) virus to 158 in the country, health officials said here.

Of the five new cases, two were reported from Srinagar and one each from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

‘So far, 1,007 people have been tested, of whom 158 have tested positive for Influenza A(H1N1),’ a statement issued here said.

An official said, of the 1,007 people tested for swine flu, 303 were identified through entry screening at the 22 international airports.

Late selling pulls down Sensex, closes flat

Mumbai, July 09: A key index of the Indian equities markets closed on a flat note Thursday as investors booked profits towards the closing bell. It closed about 11.69 points in the red.

The 30-scrip benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, which opened at 13,796.19 points, fell 11.69 points or 0.08 percent to 13,757.46 points.

However, the Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed 0.05 percent higher at 4,080.95 points.

Businessman stabbed to death in Delhi

New Delhi, July 09: A 32-year-old businessman was stabbed to death in the national capital by four men after he refused to give them Rs.400,000, police said. His brother alleged the involvement of his estranged wife in the murder.

Jagmohan Singh Kohli, owner of a rubber factory, was stabbed to death at his Rajouri Garden residence in west Delhi late Wednesday night when he refused to give money to the assailants, a police officer said.

Update: Gujarat liquor toll rises to 84, bedlam in assembly

Ahmedabad, July 09: The death toll caused by moonshine rose to 84 here Thursday in one of Gujarat’s worst such tragedies, as the opposition denounced the government over the deaths in a state where consumption and sale of liquor is officially banned.

Nearly 170 people were still warded in four hospitals of Ahmedabad, some in critical condition, authorities said. From the time people began dying Monday, the number of fatalities has mounted rapidly.
