BJP leader Naqvi held guilty for poll code violation, gets bail

BJP leader and union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi Wednesday got bail after a court sentenced him to a year in prison for violating the model code of conduct during the 2009 elections.

The chief judicial magistrate in Lucknow ordered the detention of the minister of state for minority affairs and parliamentary affairs but later released him on a personal bond of Rs.20,000.

The Bharatiya Janata Party said the case against Naqvi was registered by the then Uttar Pradesh government out of “political vendetta” and there was no need for the minister to resign.

World Bank: India to be world’s fastest growing big economy by 2017

Fuelled by economic reforms, India is projected to become the world’s fastest growing large economy by 2017 with a growth rate of seven percent, overtaking China along the way, a World Bank report said Tuesday.

According to the Washington-based World Bank’s Global Economic Prospects (GEP) report, India’s gross domestic product (GDP) that grew by 5.6 percent last year, is expected to zoom to 6.4 percent this year before reaching the seven percent mark next year and keep that level in 2017 when China decelerates to 6.9 percent.

SC seeks report on Ganga cleaning

The Supreme Court Wednesday asked if the Narendra Modi government intended to complete the task of cleaning the Ganga river in its present term or carry it to the next term and keep the issue alive.

The court sought details on the status of various sewage treatment plants (STP) that were being set up to prevent untreated effluents from flowing into the Ganga.

Surveillance officers to check swine flu treatment in Delhi

In a bid to tackle the increasing number of swine flu cases in Delhi, the health department has appointed surveillance officers to check the treatment of swine flu at the designated hospitals here.

A total of 17 government hospitals, five private hospitals and 8 laboratories have been designated by the health department to conduct the swine flu test and treatment.

The department also said it was working on adding four more laboratories for testing of swine flu samples.

Visiting Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay Wednesday told External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj that India’s and Bhutan’s security interests were intertwined and assured her of his country’s support against militants.

Omar slams NDA-led Centre over ordinances

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said the Centre issuing ordinances cannot be justified by the fact that the previous government had also done the same.

“Just because ABC issued XYZ number of ordinances doesn’t justify the current lot issued(.) Otherwise campaign saying ‘we will bring no change’,” Omar wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Omar was apparently referring to some BJP leaders defending the ordinances issued by the NDA government on the grounds that the previous UPA government had also issued many ordinances.

36 IS militants killed in Iraq

At least 36 Islamic State (IS) militants were killed in clashes and air strikes across Iraq Wednesday, a security source said.

In Iraq’s Anbar province, US-led coalition warplanes pounded a school building used as IS headquarters, leaving 13 militants dead and six wounded along with four vehicles destroyed, Xinhua quoted a security source as saying.

Also in Anbar, Iraqi security forces and Sunni tribesmen killed 12 IS militants in clashes in the provincial capital city of Ramadi, according to the source.

Denotify bulls as performing animals: Tamil Nadu CM

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam Wednesday urged the central government to denotify bulls from the list of performing animals so that Jallikattu – bull taming sport – could be held in the state during Pongal festival.

Bihar woman says man harassed her via 750 mobile numbers

A woman in Bihar here has claimed that a man called her from 750 mobile phone numbers in the last six years asking her to accept him as her lover.

The woman finally filed a complaint with the women’s helpline, an official said Wednesday.

The woman said in her complaint that she used to block the man’s phone number time and again, and he called by changing his number every time. The man was the woman’s classmate.

The Health Ministry budget is likely to face a massive Rs 6000-crore cut on account of non- utilisation of the entire budgetary allocation even as its Minister J P Nadda on Wednesday maintained that no flagship programme will be affected due to the downsizing.

Disaster-hit states to get NDRF assistance

Three candidates Wednesday submitted their nomination papers for the Delhi assembly polls on the first day of filing of nominations, officials said.

“Nafe Singh, an independent candidate, filed his nomination papers from Burari assembly constituency while D.K. Chopra, also an independent candidate, filed his nomination from Mehrauli assembly constituency,” said a statement from the poll panel.

Gareeb Aadmi Party leader Shyam Bharateey filed his nomination papers from Uttam Nagar constituency.

Army men attack Maharashtra policemen, vandalise police station

In two separate incidents, army men attacked on-duty police personnel, injuring at least three, and vandalised the Upanagar police station here, a top official said Wednesday.

In the first incident, an army lieutenant on two-day casual leave, came to the police station along with a relative to complain about some family dispute, Nashik Additional Commissioner of Police Hemrajsingh Rajput told IANS.

Apparently enraged over some delay in filing the complaint, he and the relative attacked the on-duty police officer and at least two other policemen.

Odisha approves industrial projects worth Rs.846 cr

The Odisha government Wednesday accorded in-principle approval to four companies to set up projects in the state with an investment of Rs.846 crore.

The companies would provide direct employment to more than 1,000 people.

The State Level Single Window Clearance Committee (SLSWCC) headed by Chief Secretary G.C. Pati cleared the four projects.

Uttam Infralogix has proposed to set up a cross country pipe conveyor from Odisha to Chhattisgarh, and a coal unloading and crushing facility at Baliamunda in Sundargarh district with a total investment of Rs.500 crore.
