Scientists see potential for ‘another Earth’ among 3 newly discovered exoplanets

NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope has recently discovered a star with three planets only slightly larger than Earth that can help study the atmosphere of the earth-size worlds , which may provide proof of potential alien life.

The outermost planet orbits in the “Goldilocks” zone, a region where surface temperatures could be moderate enough for liquid water and perhaps life, to exist.

Maharashtra seeks extension of subsidy on raw sugar exports

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday met Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan and sought extension of subsidy on raw sugar exports and hike in import duty on the sweetener to 40 percent to help cash-starved mills clear cane arrears to farmers.

“Met with a delegation led by the Maharashtra Chief Minister. We discussed on issues marring the sugar industry,” Paswan told PTI after the meeting.

Japan to contribute to ‘Make in India’: Minister

Japan will contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative to support India in becoming a base of economic growth for the Indo-Pacific region and the world, Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said here Saturday.

Delivering the 15th Sapru House Lecture at the Indian Council for World Affairs (ICWA) here, Kishida said it was important for Japan and India to strengthen their maritime cooperation and both sides should “even more proactively assume” their “responsibilities to protect open and stable seas” under their partnership.

Govt’s role is to facilitate business: Piyush Goyal

Government’s role in business is facilitating it, not micro management, Power Minister Piyush Goyal said Saturday.

“We need to do away with government controls. The government’s job is not to run businesses but facilitate business,” he said at a global business summit here.

“The role of the government is that of an enabler and not to micromanage business. It should provide ease of business,” the minister said.

However, he said that the government and the private sector need to work in tandem as both need to co-exist for better development of the infrastructure sector.

Pak Hindu girl barred from living with husband

A court here has barred a Pakistani Hindu girl from living with her Muslim ‘husband’ due to a controversy over her real age and alleged forced conversion.

Anjali Kumari Meghwar, who is now named Salma and is said to have converted to Islam after falling in love with Muhammad Baksh Anwar Siyal, was disallowed by the court to go with her husband or her parents and instead sent to a women’s shelter home.

Five Peshawar massacre suspects held in Afghanistan

Five people, suspected of involvement in the massacre in the army-run school in Pakistan`s Peshawar, have been arrested in Afghanistan, security officials said Saturday.

The five helped support the assault at the school, reported Pakistan daily The Nation citing officials speaking on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorised to brief journalists about the arrests.

Those arrested – “all foreigners” – were arrested in recent weeks near Afghanistan`s eastern border with Pakistan, they added.

Father of ISIS sympathiser says son did nothing illegal

The father of the city-based youth, arrested by the Cyberabad police when he was allegedly on his way to Dubai to join the Middle East terror group ISIS on Saturday said his son has not done anything illegal.

“There is a difference between thinking and action. He has not done anything illegal. May be on the laptop some sympathy factor may be there for some organisations (in his writing). I don’t deny that. But I have never spoken about politics with my son,” Ahmed Moinuddin, a retired engineer, said.

SATHI launches ‘Swatch Bharat Force’

Social Action Through Integrated Network (SATHI) has launched a Swatch Bharat Force (SBF) initiative to strengthen ‘Clean India’ drive.

Goa Governor Mridula Sinha is the president of SATHI which provides a platform to different voluntary organisations working for the upliftment of general masses.

Smriti Irani lays foundation stone of IIM Visakhapatnam

Union Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani on Saturday said here that a task force would be constituted soon to expedite setting up of Central education institutes, as assured in the state reorganization act, in Andhra Pradesh.

Irani today laid the foundation stone of a new Indian Institute of Management at Gambhiram village in Anandapuram mandal of Visakhapatnam district.

Irani’s assurance came in response to a request made by the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

The NDA government was committed to bring in best of the reforms in the education sector, she said.

Raje discusses possible Rajasthan and UK cooperation

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje met a delegation of UK-India Business Council (UKIBC) led by Patricia Hewitt, chairperson of UKIBC, here Saturday and discussed possible cooperation between the UK and Rajasthan in some sectors, an official statement issued here said.

Media behaving like prosecution, judge, jury: Tharoor

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has hit out at a section of the media for hounding him over the murder of his wife Sunanda Pushkar, saying some anchors were behaving like “prosecution, judge and jury”.

“I been advised not to take any legal action against the media by my lawyers,” Tharoor told CNN-IBN in an interview.

The Congress MP said he enjoys certain rights as a citizen of India and he does not need any special privileges.

The probe into the murder of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor`s wife Sunanda Pushkar will soon reach its conclusion, Delhi Police chief B.S. Bassi said Thursday.

Bassi said many people have been questioned and the remaining will be questioned in the next couple of days.

“Our SIT (Special Investigation Team) is investigating the case and will reach its conclusion soon. They are looking into each and every aspect. They have already questioned several people and the remaining will be questioned in the next couple of days,” Bassi told the media.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Thursday admitted he was “taken aback” when Narendra Modi congratulated him after he won the Lok Sabha elections, especially after a remark the prime minister had made about his wife Sunanda Pushkar.

“I was surprised because apart from the fact that Modi had not shown signs of reconciliation with an opponent before, he and I had also clashed quite clearly and explicitly 6 to 8 months previously when he had said something nasty about my wife and I responded both on Twitter and television,” he said.

60,000 arrested in China anti-drug operation

Police in China arrested 60,500 suspects for drug-related crimes in an operation that saw the seizure of 11.14 tonnes of narcotics, the ministry of public security announced Thursday.

The police have dealt with 52,800 drug crime cases from late September to the end of December last year, amid a nationwide campaign to “ban drugs in hundreds of cities”, the ministry said in a statement. The campaign will last until April this year, Xinhua reported.

13 killed in anti-IS strikes, bomb attacks in Iraq

At least 13 people were killed in Iraq Thursday in bomb attacks and strikes by the US-led coalition against the Sunni radical group Islamic State (IS), a security source said.

In Anbar province, seven IS militants were killed and five others injured in air strikes by US-led coalition warplanes against positions of the extremist militants near the town of al-Baghdadi, some 200 km northwest of Baghdad, Xinhua quoted a security source as saying.

Noida policeman held after daughter-in-law found dead

A police officer posted in Noida has been detained after his daughter-in-law was found dead under mysterious circumstances, a Ghaziabad police official said Thursday.

The woman’s father alleged that the Noida police officer and his family killed his daughter for dowry.

Police said the 26-year-old woman, Neeraj alias Neera, was the daughter of Rookram, a resident of Babrala in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh.

She was married April 1, 2014 to Mohit, the son of sub-inspector Satish Chand Gautam, who is posted in Noida and stays in Pratap Vihar area.

December trade deficit falls to $9.43 bn on global crude dip

India’s trade deficit in December 2014 fell by over 7 percent at $9.43 billion, from $10.18 billion in the corresponding month of 2013, government data showed Monday.

The fall on a month-on-month basis was over 44 percent, the November deficit having been recorded at $16.86 billion, owing mainly to the steep plunge in global crude oil prices.

“The trade deficit for April-December 2014-15 was estimated at $110.05 billion which was higher than the deficit of $107.07 billion during April-December 2013-14,” the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement.

National Billiards: Defending champion Kothari crashes out of last 16

Defending champion Sourav Kothari crashed out of the last-16 after losing to Gujarat’s Dhvaj Haria (PSPB) 1-3 in the National Billiards and Snooker Championship being played here at The Bengal Rowing Club Thursday.

Haria surged ahead with two breaks of 137 and 110 in the first and third game which made his position a formidable one against Kothari.

Kothari, however, could have done better in the fourth game to extend the tie to the decider, but fell short by 9 points.

PM awards certificates of excellence to army officers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday presented certificates of excellence to eight young innovative officers of the Indian Army.

The certificates were presented to the officers for their unique innovations in areas such as reconnaissance, monitoring and greater facilitation for soldiers in combat conditions, said an official statement.

The certificates were presented during the “at-home function” at the residence of the Chief of Army Staff on the occasion of Army Day. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar was also present.
