Taliban attack Afghan soldiers in eastern province, kill 2

A local official says the Taliban have attacked Afghan troops in eastern Laghman province, triggering a gunbattle that killed two soldiers and wounded a third.

The provincial governor’s spokesman Sarhadi Zwak says the attack began around today in Alishing district.

He says there was an explosion during the shootout, possibly from a roadside mine, which might have caused the casualties.

Pak-origin UK man pleads guilty to beheading wife

A Pakistani-born British man on Monday pleaded guilty to beheading his wife in a gruesome attack in which he repeatedly stabbed her and broke both her arms.
Tahira Ahmed, a 38-year-old mother of two, was found by police in May, 2014 after neighbours rang to report a violent row at her home in Northolt in west London.

Her husband Naveed Ahmed, 41, born in Pakistan but now a British citizen, had initially denied the killing when he appeared at the Old Bailey court via video link from prison last October.

Police arrest 4 Pak-trained IS militants in Bangladesh

Four alleged Islamic State militants, including its regional coordinator who frequently travelled to India, Pakistan and other countries, have been arrested here for plotting to attack key installations and turn Bangladesh into a Caliphate State, police said today.

The four, trained in Pakistan, were arrested during overnight raids in the Jatrabari and Khilkhet areas of the capital, Dhaka.

“Yes, the IS coordinator and the three others have been arrested,” a police spokesman told PTI.

USA drone attack kills six militants in Pakistan

At least six militants were killed today in a US drone attack in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region where the military is engaged in an operation against al-Qaeda-linked fighters since June last year.

The CIA-operated pilotless aircraft targeted a compound in the Shahi Khel area of North Waziristan. “Six people were killed and four injured,” a security official said, adding “The identity of those killed is not known.” The area is controlled by al-Qaeda-linked Hafiz Gul

Distressed over the long-wait of 25 years to go back ‘home’, displaced Kashmiri Pandits today staged a protest here demanding immediate steps for their rehabilitation and accused both state and central governments of doing nothing to facilitate their return to the Valley.

Wearing black badges and bands as a mark of the protest at Jantar Mantar, the Kashmiri Pandits also asked the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government to bring a ‘white paper’ on what they have done so far for their rehabilitation.

No alarm bells in Sena over Fadnavis’ “powerful CM” remark

The Shiv Sena does not see anything wrong with Maharashtra Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’ comment that he considers himself a “powerful CM.”

“With Sena joining the government, we have a very good majority and a stable government after many years. That was not the case during the earlier rule,” Sena spokesperson Neelam Gorhe told PTI.

“Many CMs so far have worked with the support of independent MLAs and even if a group of 5 or 10 MLAs took another view, there was an issue,” Gorhe said.

John Kerry to attend anti-IS coalition meeting in London

US Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to London next week to attend a foreign ministers’ meeting that would focus on strategising ways to counter the Islamic State (IS), the State Department announced.

Kerry would be in London Jan 22 “to consult with the UK and other counter-IS coalition partners on our shared efforts to degrade and defeat IS,” Xinhua reported, citing State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki as saying Sunday.

Kerry would also hold talks with his British counterpart, Philip Hammond, who would co-host the meeting, Psaki added.

Tharoor to be questioned by Wednesday

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will be questioned by the Delhi Police in the next two days in connection with the mysterious death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar a year back and a notice has been served on him for it, Police Commissioner B S Bassi said today.

The police chief maintained that all those people relevant in the case are being examined by the Special Investigation Team probing the high-profile case.

Asked when would Tharoor be questioned and whether a notice has been served, Bassi said, “Notice has been issued and he may be questioned today, tomorrow or day after tomorrow.”

HC stays its order to SC registry on data on cases reserved

Delhi High Court today stayed a single judge’s order directing Supreme Court registry to provide information to an RTI activist regarding cases whose judgements have been pending after being reserved.

A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw also issued notice to RTI activist Commodore (retd) Lokesh K Batra, the apex court’s Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) and the Appellate Authority, under the transparency law as they have been made parties in the appeal filed by the apex court registry.

Cybercriminals targeting LinkedIn users, says Symantec

Cybercriminals are now targeting LinkedIn users by scamming them into sharing their credentials by sending out mails claiming to be from the support team of the world’s largest professional networking firm, security software firm Symantec warned today.

Founded in 2003, LinkedIn has over 300 million members globally, of which more than 26 million users are in India (as of June 2014).

Symantec said that over the last week it has observed an increase in phishing emails claiming to be from the US-based firm’s support team.

‘No link between terrorist infiltration bid and Obama’s visit’

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today dismissed reports linking any possible infiltration bid by terrorists from across the border with the up oming visit of US President Barack Obama.

“The reports of terrorists trying to infiltrate from across the border are unnecessarily linked with Obama’s visit. From the information given by northern command this happens every year,” Parrikar told reporters after launching of four vessels of Indian Coast Guard at port town of Vasco.

Obama will be the chief guest at the Republic Day function in Delhi on January 26.

West Bengal rolls out pentavalent vaccine programme

West Bengal has introduced the pentavalent vaccination programme throughout the state to prevent infant mortality, a state health official said Saturday.

The combination of five vaccines in one will act against five diseases — diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus (DPT), Hepatitis B and HIB (meningitis).

It has to be administered in three doses when the infant reaches six, 10 and 14 weeks and a booster dose at one-and-a-half years.

Chennai: Two infants die after vaccination, govt issues clarification

Two infants Saturday died at a government hospital here allegedly after they were administered BCG vaccine, prompting the state government to issue a clarification.

The infants, admitted to Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, died this morning.

The parents alleged that the infants fell sick after they were administered BCG vaccination last week. The children were in the intensive care unit since then.

BCG vaccine is given to a new-born child to give him or her immunity from tuberculosis.

1 billion posts deleted in year-long Internet cleanup in China

Almost one billion pornographic and harmful posts in 2014 have been self-inspected and deleted by Chinese websites in an Internet cleanup operation.

“Authorities also closed down about 2,200 websites and 20 million online forums, blogs and social media accounts that had spread erotic and illegal content,” said Ren Xianliang, deputy head of the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC).

During the operation, all domestic gateway websites have well cooperated.

Star with three planets larger than Earth discovered

NASA’s Kepler space telescope has discovered a star with three planets only slightly larger than Earth.

The star, EPIC 201367065, is a cool red M-dwarf about half the size and mass of our own Sun.

At a distance of 150 light years, the star ranks among the top 10 nearest stars known to have transiting planets.

NASA scientist receives top astrophysics prize

Fiona Harrison, the principal investigator of NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array mission (NuSTAR), has been awarded the top prize in high-energy astrophysics.

The “2015 Rossi Prize” was awarded to Harrison, professor at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena for her “groundbreaking work on supernova remnants, neutron stars and black holes enabled by NuSTAR.”

Harrison’s “assembly and leadership of the extraordinary NuSTAR team has opened a new window on the Universe,” read the citation for the Rossi Prize.
