Indian CEOs are the most optimistic lot across the world for their own business as well as for the global economy, even as the overall optimism among business chiefs globally has come down for growth in the next one year.

Indian CEOs also top the list in terms of confidence in their hiring plans, longer-term growth outlook and on availability of growth opportunities present today, as per the annual CEO survey of global consultancy PwC, released here on the first day of WEF Annual Meeting 2015.

Pak calls US warning report to country against terror attacks in India baseless

Pakistani government has stressed that the Indian report that says that the US warned Pakistan against launching any terror attack in India during President Barack Obama`s visit is baseless.

According to Dawn News, Pakistan`s Ambassador to the US, Jalil Abbas Jilani, said that the report by Indian media was exaggerated and that the country`s media had a tendency to “invent and exaggerate things”.

Jilani said that US Secretary of State John Kerry had also appreciated Pakistan`s actions taken against terrorism and extremism.

Lawmakers’ phones not tapped: Pakistani official

Pakistan`s top civilian intelligence agency – Intelligence Bureau (IB) – has said that the phone calls of lawmakers and politicians are not being tapped, media reported Tuesday.

The intelligence agency said this following reports that surveillance is being carried out.

Man jailed in UAE for trying to force ex-girlfriend into marriage

A Sri Lankan man in United Arb Emirates (UAE) has been jailed for six months for attempting to force his former Indian girlfriend into marriage after blackmailing her with nude photos.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted Sri Lankan swimming instructor, A.P., 34, of blackmailing and threatening to publish the 23-year-old woman`s nude photos for financial gains, the Gulf News reported Monday.

A.P. had an affair with the woman during which he took her pictures in compromising positions.

CBI questions Madan Mitra in jail

CBI officials today interrogated West Bengal minister Madan Mitra at Alipore Correctional Home where he is lodged after his arrest in connection with the Saradha scam probe.

Sources in CBI told PTI that Mitra was interrogated after obtaining the court’s permission when he was produced before it.

The CBI counsel had maintained in the court that interrogation of Mitra was necessary for stitching the loose ends in the probe.

Novelist moves HC accusing ‘PK’ makers of plagiarism

Novelist Kapil Isapuri has approached the Delhi High Court, accusing the makers of Aamir Khan’s film “PK” of plagiarism.

He said certain portions from his Hindi novel “Farishta” published in 2013 were “stolen and copied” and used in the film.

Isapuri has sought punitive damages of Rs.1 crore from the filmmakers along with credit for his work.

The Rajkumar Hirani directorial, which raises questions about religion and people’s blind faith in godmen, has been co-produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Hirani. The movie also stars Anushka Sharma and Sanjay Dutt.

15 more marine police stations along Andhra coast: Rajappa

Andhra Pradesh government will set up 15 more marine police stations along the coast in the state, Deputy Chief Minister N Chinna Rajappa said on Tuesday.

“Fifteen more marine police stations will be set up soon in addition to the existing 21 such police stations in the state,” he told reporters after launching the I-CLIK (Instant Complaint Login Internet Kiosk) and mobile app ‘Abhayam’ for safety of citizens, particularly women.

I-CLIK enables citizens to log their grievances through an online kiosk. It focuses specifically on women’s problems and issues.

Raje seeks central support in power sector

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Monday met union Power Minister Piyush Goyal and senior officials in New Delhi to seek central government support for power projects in the state, an official statement said.

“Raje discussed various issues concerning the power sector and different aspects with the ministry officials at length,” the statement said.

After cut, RBI asks banks to review lending rate quarterly

Following its interest rate cut last week after nearly two years, the Reserve Bank (RBI) Monday asked banks to notify the base, or minimum, lending rate at least once every three months based on cost of funds.

“As hitherto, banks are required to review the Base Rate at least once in a quarter with the approval of the board or the Asset Liability Management Committee (ALCO) as per the bank’s practice,” the RBI said, issuing new guidelines on interest rates on advances.

New device lets deaf ‘hear’ through their tongues

Researchers are developing an electric retainer that could allow the hearing-impaired to ‘listen’ through their tongues.

The retainer will eliminate the need for expensive cochlear implants for those with hearing loss, researchers said.

The technology relies on a Bluetooth-enabled earpiece to detect sound and send electrical impulses to the electrode-packed retainer that wearers press their tongue against to ‘hear’.

The Folding@home mobile app is an extension of the Folding@home distributed computing project launched by Vijay Pande, a professor of chemistry at Stanford University, in collaboration with Japanese corporate giant Sony in 2007.

4 die due to swine flu in Haryana: Officials

Swine flu has claimed four lives in Haryana even as ten more patients were tested positive for the virus, officials said here Monday.

“In Haryana, 14 positive cases of swine flu have come to light in the past few days, of which four casualties have been reported,” Additional Chief Secretary, Health Ram Niwas said after a video conferencing with all the civil surgeons of the state.

He, however, said that Haryana Health Department has made adequate arrangements for the treatment of patients suffering from swine flu.

Probability of death by NCDs has gone up in India: WHO

The probability of dying pre- maturely from a non-communicable disease like cancer has gone up in India between 2010-2012 and it has emerged as the leading cause of fatalities globally, a WHO report said Monday.

The latest global status report on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) states that the four main NCDs are cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes or chronic respiratory diseases.

The report is the second in a triennial series tracking worldwide progress in prevention and control of NCDs.

Indian scientists design morphine replacement for pain therapy

In a breakthrough that could impact the blurring realms of pain and pleasure, Indian scientists have designed a potential morphine replacement, sans the side effects of addiction, but loaded with pain-killing power.

For nearly four millennia, morphine and its cousin compounds (opioids) have ruled the roost in terms of their extraordinary prowess to dull pain (analgesics).

Morphine (sulphate) is a by-product of opium which is extracted from poppy plants. India grows poppy under licence in three states – Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Pakistan occupies top slot in Google’s list of most porn-searching countries

Pakistan tops the list of most porn-searching countries and leads the way in porn searches for animals like pigs, donkeys, dogs, cats and snakes, according to the data released by Google.

The data also showed that six of the top eight porn-searching countries were Muslim states with Egypt ranking second in the list followed by Iran, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Turkey at numbers four, five, seven and eight, respectively, reported The Express Tribune.

The sale of pornographic material is prohibited in nearly every Arab country except Lebanon and Turkey, the report said.

24 million Twitter users never tweet

Nearly 24 million out of 284 million Twitter users do not tweet at all, reveals the latest data filed by the micro-blogging site with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

This means that nearly 8.5 percent of Twitter users could be robots who never use the service, ValueWalk reported.

The document pointed to mobile applications that the users connect “with no discernible user action involved”.

How stars, galaxies formed in early Universe

A new study has provided a deeper insight into how stars and massive galaxies formed in the infancy of our Universe.

Two teams of astronomers led by researchers at the University of Cambridge have looked back nearly 13 billion years, when the Universe was less than 10 percent its present age, to determine how quasars – extremely luminous objects powered by supermassive black holes with the mass of a billion suns – regulate the formation of stars and the build-up of the most massive galaxies.

Researchers to send seeds to Mars

A team of young researchers will send seeds to Mars in 2018 to grow the first plant on the Red planet.

The Seed team has won a contest on the best designs for experiments on Mars organised by Dutch non-profit Mars One.

“We are excited to announce the winner of the Mars One University Competition: Seed. The winning payload will fly to the surface of Mars on Mars One’s 2018 unmanned lander mission,” the company said.

India’s growth to reach 6.3% in 2016: UN report

India will see a gradual growth acceleration with its GDP expected to reach 5.9 percent this year and 6.3 percent in 2016, the UN said Monday while partly crediting the recovery to improved market sentiment after the new government took office and announced key reforms.

“India’s economy expanded by an estimated 5.4 percent in 2014, an improvement from growth of 5 percent recorded in 2013, but still significantly below the 8 percent pace of the pre-crisis period,” said the United Nations World Economic Situation and Prospects 2015 (WESP) report, launched today.

Oil Min moots introduction of ‘save fuel’ lessons in textbooks

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has mooted the idea of introducing lessons in fuel conservation in textbooks on the lines of environment studies to instill the habit of saving the scarce resource.

“I have written to the Ministry of Human Resource Development to make oil conservation part of syllabus in primary and secondary education,” he said at signing of an agreement between ONGC and seven IITs for collaboration between academia and industry.

Railways invites suggestions from public on managing finances

Facing huge financial crunch, Railways has invited suggestions from the general public to increase its revenue and reduce expenditure ahead of the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament.

Suggestions have also been sought to reduce purchase cost of fuel and finding new avenue streams for the public transporter, Railway Ministry officials said.

The written suggestion can be posted on its official website in not more than 1000 words.

Cash-strapped railways require Rs 1.18 lakh crore for 359 ongoing projects.

Government to ’empower’ consumer protection bodies: Paswan

The government plans to amend the Consumer Protection Act to make the redressal mechanism easy and universally accessible, Consumer Affairs, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said Monday.

A broadbased consumer protection authority which would be empowered to take suo moto action against violating companies would be set up, Paswan said at a review meeting of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) here.

IS regional coordinator among 4 arrested in Bangladesh

Bangladesh police has arrested four alleged members of Islamic State militant group, including its regional coordinator who frequently travelled to India, Pakistan and other countries, and seized laptops and jihadi leaflets from their possession.

The four were arrested during overnight raids in the Jatrabari and Khilkhet areas of the capital, Dhaka.

“Yes, the IS coordinator and the three others have been arrested,” a police spokesman told PTI.
