Obama seeks $215 million for unique medical plan

US President Barack Obama has sought $215 million for an effort that will match patients` genetic and physiological data to treat their health conditions more precisely.

Obama proposed the plan, known as the “Precision Medicine Initiativea, in his annual State of the Union address last week.

Details of the plan come as Obama prepares to release his fiscal year 2016 budget request to Congress Feb 2, the scientific journal Nature reported.

Central Bank of India opens first forex hub in Guj at Vadodara

The first forex hub of the Mumbai- headquartered Central Bank of India in Gujarat was opened at Urmi Char rasta here to provide prompt and efficient services to importers and exporters.

Ramesh Singh, General Manager, Treasury & International division, Central Bank of India inaugurated this forex hub here yesterday which is fully equipped with necessary infrastructure such as swift facility, fax Internet etc besides trained staff.

Speaking on the occasion, Singh said it is the first forex hub of the bank in Gujarat after opening of a forex hub in Mumbai in August 2014.

Base year change: Per capita income rises to Rs 6699/month in FY14

India’s per capita income, a gauge for assessing standard of living, for 2013-14 is up at Rs 6,699 per month for 2013-14 as against the earlier estimate of Rs 6,198.33 after the government updated the base year for measuring national accounts.

Government on Friday made changes in the national accounts calculation methodology by revising the base year to 2011-12 from 2004-05.

In 2012-13 and 2011-12, the per capita income per month were estimated at Rs 5,966.08 and Rs 5,359.67 respectively, data released by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MOSPI) showed.

Prabhu pitches for greater investments in Railways

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu here Saturday pitched for greater investments in railways and said development in the sector will help the country grow.

The minister was here to flag off two new trains – Ahmedabad-Chennai bi-weekly express and Ahmedabad-Darbhanga Jansadharan express. He also launched Wi-fi facility at the city railway station.

“It is a matter of pleasure for the country that our economy is on the path of improvement and progress.

With this, responsibility of Railways has also increased. We need to work on many levels,” said Prabhu.

PM Modi reviews progress of LPG subsidy transfer scheme

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reviewed the progress of implementation of the scheme for paying subsidy on cooking gas (LPG) directly into bank accounts of consumers.

The Direct Benefit Transfer Scheme for LPG subsidy, now renamed PAHAL or Pratyaksha Hastaantarit Laabh, covers more than 9.75 crore LPG consumers and is the world’s largest cash transfer programme as compared to similar programmes in other countries such as China, Mexico and Brazil, an official statement said here.

‘Ensure improved climate to protect press freedom in Sri Lanka’

A US-based journalist advocacy group has asked the new Sri Lankan government to ensure improved climate for press freedom and to take concrete and meaningful steps in this regard.

In an open letter to the new Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, the Committee to Protect Journalist (CPG) said, he has the opportunity to write a new chapter in country’s history.

UN concerned over Nepal’s deadlock in drafting Constitution

The UN has expressed concern over Nepal`s deadlock in drafting a new constitution and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on the nation`s leaders to continue their dialogue, according to his spokesman Stéphane Dujarric.

He told reporters here on Friday that Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jens Toyberg-Frandzen “expressed the UN`s increasing concern about the diminishing momentum for inclusive negotiation on the new constitution to be adopted by consensus.”

Pakistan mourns victims of deadly suicide bombing in Shi’íte mosque

Pakistan on Saturday mourned the victims of the deadly suicide bombing in a Shia mosque in southern Sindh province that killed 61 people with many of the injured still in critical condition, officials said.

The blast ripped through the Shia mosque in Lakhi Dar area of Shikarpur district when about 400 worshippers lined up to offer weekly Friday prayers.

Provincial Health Minister Jam Mehtab said that 61 people were killed and over 50 injured in the attack.

SSP Saqib Memon said that a severed head and other body parts of an unidentified bomber were sent for DNA testing.

Electricity, Internet, cable snapped in Khaleda Zia’s office

Hours after the disconnection of power, internet and cable connections have also been severed to former Bangladesh prime minster Khaleda Zia`s office here Saturday.

Khaleda`s Gulshan office staff found the cable network snapped when they turned on the TV around 9:00 a.m, a Bangladesh National Party (BNP) official said.

The internet connection was also severed since that time, the official told The Daily Star.

Earlier, the Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (Desco) had stopped power supply to the office.

Eliminating terror crucial for Pakistan’s economic survival: Nawaz Sharif

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said Pakistan will win the war against terror at any cost, linking it to the country’s “economic survival”, and vowed to overcome the energy crisis.

“All institutions of the country are united against war on terror. We will win this war at any cost as it is the matter of our economic survival. It is also the matter of survival of our future generations. This war is the war of the whole nation,” Sharif said, addressing a passing out parade of the Counter-Terrorism Force of Punjab Police here.

Has compensation been paid to Bilaspur sterilisation camp victims, asks SC

The Supreme Court Friday inquired if families of 14 women who lost their lives Nov 11, 2014, following botched-up sterilisation operations at a Chhattisgarh government-sponsored family planning camp in Bilaspur hospital were paid compensation as directed by its 2005 order.

The social justice bench comprising Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit sought information noting that the apex court by its March 1, 2005 verdict had issued nine directions of which the last provided for compensation to the victim of faulty sterilisation.

Separate OPDs for swine flu patients in Rajasthan

Concerned over the increasing number of swine flu deaths in the state, the Rajasthan government has decided to set up separate out-patient departments (OPD) in government hospitals for patients with symptoms of the disease.

Thirty three persons have died so far in the state due to the disease.

“These OPDs will be set up in all the government hospitals across the state. Besides this, we will start door-to-door screening in and around the areas from where swine flu patients have so far been found,” a senior official of the state medical and health department told IANS Friday.

Building smart cities is challenging but doable: Minister

Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu Friday asked the states to be ready to make their cities and towns “smart” under the central government’s initiative of building 100 smart cities.

Litchi fruit suspected in mystery illness in India

A toxin in litchi fruits may be linked to a mysterious and sometimes fatal brain disease that has afflicted children in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, and neighbouring districts since 1995, US researchers claim.

An association between the illness and litchi fruit has been postulated because Muzaffarpur is a litchi fruit?producing region, according to a report by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Indian National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and CDC investigated outbreaks of the illness in 2013 and 2014.

Fiscal deficit exceeds budget estimates in 9 months

The Indian government’s fiscal deficit has exceeded the budget estimate within the first nine months of the current fiscal, data showed Friday at a time it has recovered ground somewhat by earning over Rs.22,000 crore from disinvestment in Coal India.

Latest data by the Controller General of Accounts shows that deficit during April-December period was over Rs.532,000 crore as against the annual budget estimate of Rs.531,000 crore.

Crossing 100 percent of the estimate in the first nine months compares with the figure of 95.2 percent during corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

Elderly parents held for killing son

An elderly couple, long tormented by violent acts of their 27-year-old alcoholic son, killed him and dumped his body in a drain after chopping it into small pieces and sought to mislead police about his whereabouts but finally confessed to the crime, police said Friday.

Nand Kishore, 68, a mason, and his wife Asha Devi, 60, have been arrested for killing their son Suraj Bhan inside their house Jan 6 night in south Delhi’s Jaitpur.

The victim’s body was found Jan 8 after that police launched an inquiry on finding the behaviour of elderly couple suspicious, a police official said.

More than half a billion people use mobile phones to access Facebook

More than half a billion people reportedly access Facebook from their mobile devices.

It is reported that nearly 526 million of Facebook’s monthly active users access the social network site using mobile phones, marking another milestone in Facebook’s shift to mobile.

According to Tech Crunch, that’s up from 456 million in the previous quarter, and it’s an increase of around 78 percent from the 296 million mobile-only users that Facebook saw during the same period last year. It also includes about 38 percent of Facebook’s 1.39 billion monthly active users.

Facebook testing new ‘Place Tips’ app that shows relevant info about user’s location in News Feed

Facebook is testing a new feature called Place Tips that will put useful and relevant information about the users’ location in their News Feed.

According to the Verge, the Facebook app will try to guess when a user is in a popular or interesting location and surface relevant tips, photos, and posts from the place in question.

Facebook’s product manager Mike LeBeau said that News Feed today is a pretty good tool at connecting one to friends and news, adding that it is Facebook’s job to connect the world.

The latest feature has been rolled out to users in New York as of now.

New 3-D map of nearby supernova remnant reveals its ‘bubbly interior’

Astronomers have recently created a 3-D map of nearby supernova remnant with the help of the astronomical equivalent of a CAT scan, which revealed that it has a “bubbly interior.”

Cassiopeia A, or Cas A for short, is one of the most well studied supernova remnants in our galaxy. But it still holds major surprises. A Harvard-Smithsonian and Dartmouth College astronomer with the help of map found it was composed of a collection of about a half dozen massive cavities or “bubbles.”

The NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope photo of NGC 7714 presents an especially striking view of the galaxy’s smoke-ring-like structure. The golden loop was made of Sun-like stars that have been pulled deep into space, far from the galaxy’s center. The galaxy was located approximately 100 million light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Pisces.

NASA’s Cassini mission has recently found that Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, behaves like Venus and Mars when exposed to raw power of solar wind.

The observations suggest that unmagnetized bodies like Titan might interact with the solar wind in the same basic ways, regardless of their nature or distance from the Sun.

Titan is large enough that it could be considered a planet if it orbited the Sun on its own, and a flyby of the giant moon in Dec. 2013 simulated that scenario, from Cassini’s vantage point.

Bank of Baroda shares slump 11.5% on weak Q3 earnings

Shares of Bank of Baroda (BoB) on Friday tumbled 11.5 percent after the company reported a steep 68 percent decline in net profit for the quarter ended December 31, 2014.

Reacting to the sluggish numbers, shares of BoB plunged 13.58 percent to Rs 187.90 during the day and finally ended at Rs 193.35, down 11.08 percent on the BSE.

At the National Stock Exchange, it slumped 11.49 percent to close at Rs 192.20.

The stock was the top loser among 50 index constituents on the Nifty index.

Economy to be a $4-5 tn economy in 10-12 years: Sinha

Stating its great time to invest in India, Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha on Friday said the Indian economy has potential to become a USD 4-5 trillion economy in the next 10-12 years.

“You might not find a better opportunity to create wealth. It’s great time to invest in India…We are going to take India’s USD 2 trillion economy to USD 4-5 trillion economy in the next 10-12 years,” Sinha said at an event organised by the Indian Private and Venture Capital Association (IVCA) here.

ICICI Q3 Net up 14%; bad loans jump

ICICI Bank Friday reported a 13.7 percent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 3,265.32 crore for three months to December, helped by better performance of subsidiaries even as concerns emerged over bad loans.

It had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 2,872.30 crore for the October-December quarter of last fiscal.

On a standalone basis, the bank’s post-tax net rose by a similar 14 percent to Rs 2,889 crore in the third quarter ended December 2014.
