Mumbai encounter specialist Daya Nayak back on duty

Police sub-inspector and ‘encounter specialist’ Daya Nayak, who was under suspension for nearly six-and-a-half years in a disproportionate assets case, was on Saturday reinstated and posted in a local arms wing of the department, police said.

Soon after receiving the order of reinstatement, Nayak took charge Saturday itself.
He had been suspended from the service in January 2006 and was arrested by the Maharashtra Anti Corruption Bureau after a court rejected his anticipatory bail plea in the case.

Manmohan calls Chandrababu seeking support for Pranab

With the UPA announcing Pranab Mukherjee as its Presidential nominee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday reached out to Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu requesting him to support the veteran Congress leader.

While Singh sought support for Pranab, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik, who also got on phone with Chandrababu, urged him to endorse the candidature of former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma for the July 19 Presidential election, party sources said.

CM greets Pranab and says he is the excellent choice

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday congratulated Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on being named as the Presidential candidate by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The Chief Minister described Pranab as the most suitable choice for the nation’s highest post since “he is the senior most politician, able administrator, man of unparalleled experience of over 50 years in public life with a rare distinction of handling all the top portfolios in the Union Cabinet”. He said Pranab Mukherjee was the excellent choice and was admired by all alike.

YSRCP victory not permanent: Lagadapati

Congress MP from Vijayawada Lagadapati Rajagopal on Saturday said that the victory achieved by the YSR Congress party in the by-elections was not permanent.

Talking to media persons, Lagadapati Rajagopal said that the victory was caused due to the sympathy wave over the arrest of YSR Congress president Jaganmohan Reddy by the CBI and tears of Y S Vijayamma. If the CBI would not have arrested Jagan before the by-elections, he said that the Congress party would have won at least eight Assembly constituencies in the State.

Naidu admits failure in by-polls

Admitting the failure of Telugu Desam in the by-elections, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday said that the party suffered a major defeat despite making sincere efforts in the by-elections.

Konda Surekha blames cross-voting for defeat

YSR Congress candidate from Parkal Assembly constituency Konda Surekha attributed her defeat to cross-voting.

Talking to media persons after the announcement of by-elections results on Friday, Konda Surekha said that she has given a tough fight to Telangana Rashtra Samithi candidate M Bhikshapathi and lost with a thin margin of votes. “Though many people worked against me, my sincere efforts towards the people of constituency yielded good results,” she said.

YSRC issues show-cause notice to Rahman

YSR Congress has slapped a show-cause notice on the party minority cell convener HA Rahman for his disorderly behaviour in the party office premises during the by-poll victory celebrations here on Friday.

“We have issued a show-cause notice to Rahman and asked him to reply as to why action should not be taken for the way he conducted himself at the Party office while the cadre was celebrating the victory in by-polls,” Party General Secretary and Political Affairs Committee member Bajireddy Goverdhan said.

SC lays guidelines for extra-judicial confessions

A person can be convicted on the basis of extra-judicial confession only if such evidence inspire confidence and is corroborated by other materials, the Supreme Court has ruled, acquitting three life convicts in a murder case.

A bench of justices A K Patnaik and Swatanter Kumar while laying down guidelines on extra-judicial confession also held that the apex court can acquit a convict even if he/she has not filed any appeal against the conviction.

CM orders probe into VSP mishap

Taking a serious view over the explosion at oxygen plant in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, which claimed 11 lives and critically injured 9 others, the state government on Thursday ordered an inquiry and sought a comprehensive report over the mishap.

Expressing shock and grief over the incident, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy directed the authorities concerned to conduct an inquiry under the Factories Act and submit a report immediately.

The joint chief inspector of factories will conduct the inquiry while the Director of Factories will also take stock of the situation

Court rejects Gali’s PA PT warrant

The CBI Special Court at Nampally on Thursday refused to grant permission to the CBI seeking to bring former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy’s personal assistant Ali Khan on Prisoner Transit (PT) warrant to Hyderabad from Bangalore in connection with the Obulapuram Mining Corporation illegal mining case.

While refusing permission to CBI, the special court observed that the CBI can file charges against Ali Khan from Hyderabad.

However, the CBI stated Ali Khan’s presence was needed to get further information in the Obulapuram Mining Corporation illegal mining case.

Inflation can’t be curbed without sacrificing growth: RBI governor

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor D. Subbarao Thursday said inflation can’t be controlled without sacrificing some growth.

Delivering the Obayya memorial lecture here, he said that a short-term sacrifice of growth was a small price to pay for bringing down inflation so that in the medium term, the growth is secured.

“You cannot control inflation without sacrificing some growth. After all, you have to contain demand. When you contain demand, growth comes down. So there is no way of bringing down inflation without sacrificing some growth,” he said.

Full-proof arrangements for counting of votes: CEO

Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal has stated that the Election Commission made full-proof arrangements for counting of votes in 18 Assembly constituencies and Nellore Lok Sabha constituency on Friday.

Talking to media persons at the State Secretariat after emerging out of meeting conducted through video-conference with District Collectors and Superintendents of Police to discuss over the arrangements for counting votes, the Chief Electoral Officer said that the counting of votes would begin from morning 8 am in all centres.

Court extends judicial remand of Nimmagadda, KVB till June 21

The CBI Special Court, Nampally, on Tuesday extended the judicial remand of noted industrialist Nimmagadda Prasad, the promoter of VANPIC and a senior bureaucrat K V Brahmananda Reddy till June 21.

The Special Court gave these directions when they were produced in the court through video conference following expiry of their custody. Following directions of the court, both were shifted to the Chanchalguda Central Jail under tight police security.

Goa CM orders probe into Hyd rave party

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday said he would ask the state police to probe the busted rave party at Hyderabad for which drugs was reportedly smuggled from Goa.

“I will ask the police to give me details. They will be inquiring with their counterparts in Andhra Pradesh,” Parrikar, who is also the state Home Minister, said.

He said he would be able to comment further on the issue only after going through the details collected by police in the case.

By-polls passed off peacefully: DGP

Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy on Tuesday stated that the by-elections to 18-Assembly Constituencies and one Parliamentary Constituency in the State passed off peacefully, barring a few sporadic incidents and group clashes, pelting of stones and damage to a Police vehicle in Warangal Urban Police District.

In a media statement, the DGP stated that no major incident related to elections took place and the police acted timely and dealt with all situations firmly to ensure that the polls are conducted in a fair and free manner.

YSR Congress will win 12-16 Assembly segments: Lagadapati

Vijayawada MP Lagadapathi Rajagopal on Tuesday predicted that the YSR Congress Party would emerge victorious in the ensuing by-elections.

Talking to media persons, Lagadapathi Rajagopal said that the YSR Congress Party would win in 12-16 assembly constituencies, the ruling Congress in three segments and Opposition Telugu Desam party would win in two assembly constituencies.

Court seeks valuation certificates of Gali’s chopper

A special CBI court here on Tuesday sought for valuation certificates of a chopper and some luxury cars owned by former Karnataka Tourism minister Gali Janardhana Reddy and OMC’s Managing Director B V Srinivas Reddy, that were seized by CBI after their arrest from Bellary in September last year.

The Reddy brothers, who have been chargesheeted along with three others in the OMC case last year had earlier approached the
Special court for CBI cases here seeking release of the helicopter and some cars that were seized by the investigating agency.
