Musharraf gets approval to run in Pak election

Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf was today given approval to run in the May 11 general elections from a seat in northern Pakistan after his nomination papers from two other constituencies in the country were rejected.

Election officials accepted 69-year-old Musharraf’s nomination papers for parliamentary constituency at Chitral in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. The former President enjoys considerable support in Chitral as several development projects were started in the region during his regime.

Man arrested for repeatedly raping 14-yr-old daughter

A 14-year-old girl has alleged that she was repeatedly raped by her father and his friend in Kanjhawla area of the national capital, police said today.

The victim’s father has been arrested while a hunt is on to nab the other accused, police said.

The incident came to light when the girl approached police, they said.

The victim was taken to a government hospital for medical examination which confirmed rape, they said.

Narendra Modi to campaign in five districts in Karnataka: Jagadish Shettar

Narendra Modi will campaign in five districts for Karnataka assembly elections, Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said today amid speculation on the extent of the Gujarat Chief Minister’s role in the canvassing.

“The party will utilise Modi’s services…,” Shettar told reporters after the party’s foundation day celebrations here.

Modi will campaign in five districts, the Chief Minister said without elaborating. There are 30 districts in the state.

AP paves way for ED probe in Satyam case

Paving the way for Enforcement Directorate to proceed with the Satyam scam case, the Andhra Pradesh government has issued an order designating a local court trying the multi-crore accounting scandal as the sessions court for the purpose.

As per the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), courts lower than sessions court can not try cases filed by the Enforcement Directorate.

Urdu does not belong to any particular community, Markandey Katju says

P ress Council of India chairman Justice (retd) Markandey Katju today said that Urdu belonged to all and not restricted to any particular community.

“A misconception has been created that Hindi and Urdu belonged to particular communities…Urdu belonged to all,” Katju said.

He was speaking at a function organised by the Urdu Journalists Association here in his felicitation.

Katju also appealed to Andhra Pradesh government to look into the problems faced by small newspapers and Urdu publications.

TDP demands probe into Nag’s land deals

Two brothers electrocuted

Two brothers were electrocuted today while they were trying to switch on their submersible pump, police said.

The incident took place this afternoon, leading to the death of Kamlesh (25) and Ajay (18) on the spot, they said.

The bodies have been sent for post mortem examination while the further probes are on, police added.

Pension scheme for journalists on anvil: Tarun Gogoi

With a view to provide financial help to retiring scribes, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said his govermment is thinking of implementing a pension scheme for journalists.

Addressing a ceremony during the launch of logo for journalists of Assam at the Central Hall of Legislative Assembly here, Gogoi also announced a hike in the amount sanctioned under the Journalists’ Welfare Medical Scheme to Rs 10 crore from the existing Rs one crore.

Food poisoning suspected as 34 girls hospitalised

As many as 34 girl inmates of a private hostel at Rangapuram village in Krishna district were hospitalised after they developed symptoms of food poisoning, a health official said on Wednesday.

“Around 50 out of 80 girls of Kasturba Girls Hostel started complaining of gastroenteritis today after consuming food last night”, said District Medical and Health Officer J. Sarasajakshi.

She said around 34 girls were admitted in Nuzvid Area Hospital. “They are out of danger and recuperating”, she added.

Chiranjeevi seeks Sanjay Dutt’s pardon

Sanjay Dutt has one more supporter in the form of Union Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi who said that the Bollywood star should be pardoned.

“He has suffered enough trauma all these years and he has agreed his mistake,” Chiranjeevi told reporters here on Wednesday.

Chiranjeevi, the popular star of Tollywood, has expressed his support to Sanjay Dutt who was sentenced to jail term in the Mumbai bomb blast case. There have been divergent opinions on whether Sanjay should be granted pardon or not. Most of the film fraternity has supported his clemency.

Siblings arrested for theft; stolen jewellery recovered

A 22-year-old woman was arrested along with her brother for allegedly stealing jewellery from her employer’s residence, police said today.

Jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh was recovered allegedly from Manita and Ranbir (33), who allegedly stole it from from her employer’s house in Ashok Vihar, P Karunakaran, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West), said.

Manita was interrogated by the police after her employer Rajni Mittal reported the theft to police.

For the second time in two weeks, Mulayam Singh Yadav today praised BJP veteran L K Advani who was earlier lauded by the Samajwadi Party supremo as the “tallest leader” of the country.
