Blow to Modi, Centre returns Gujrat’s anti terror bill

New Delhi, June 19: The Union Cabinet decided to return the tough anti-terror bill passed by the Gujarat Assembly back to the state government for making amendments in line with central law.

Briefing reporters, Home Minister P Chidambaram said the Cabinet decided to recommend to the President that the GUJCOCA (Gujarat Control of Organised Crime) Bill be returned to the state government for making three amendments.

One of the amendments being suggested to the state government is that the provision that confession before a police officer will be admissible should be dropped.

Pregnant woman thrown out of running train

Lucknow, June 19: A pregnant woman and her three-year-old daughter were allegedly thrown out of a running train in Lakhimpur Kheri district by two constables
of the railway police, official sources said in Lucknow on Friday.

While the woman died, her daughter escaped with minor injuries.

The incident took place on Thursday when Dinesh Kumar boarded the Mailani-Gonda passenger train along with his wife Kavita and the child.

FIR against Shah Rukh for comments against Islam

Mumbai, June 18: A complaint was on Thursday lodged against Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan for allegedly making statements against Islam in a magazine.

“We have registered an FIR against Shah Rukh Khan after we received an application from an advocate who alleged
that the actor made some statements hurting the sentiments of Muslims,” senior police inspector of Bandra police station, Prakash George, told PTI.

The complaint was registered against Shah Rukh and the publisher of the magazine and the writer, he said.

Clinton vows ‘dramatic expansion’ of India-US ties

Thousands mourn Iranians killed in protests

Tehran, June 18: Tens of thousands of Iranians, wearing black and carrying candles, marched on Thursday to mourn those killed in mass protests against a presidential election they and defeated candidate Mirhossein Mousavi say was rigged.

Special fellowship for minority students started

New Delhi, June 18: To attract more students from minority communities to pursue research, the government has announced a fellowship programme for them.

The National Fellowship for Students from Minorities Communities has been instituted by Ministry of Minorities Affairs (MOMA) and will be implemented by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Fellowships will be provided in the range of Rs 12,000 to Rs 14,000 per month to students from minority communities to help them pursue M.Phil and Ph.D, the UGC said today.

Woman raped by former employers

New Delhi, June 18: A 28-year-old woman was allegedly raped by two of her former employers in outer Delhi, police said today.

The victim was called to the factory where she was earlier working by her employers — Pintu Kumar (28) and Hari Ram (35) — on Sunday on the pretext of settling her salary dues and she was then allegedly raped by the duo, they said.

She had left the job after she faced harassment at the work place.

Zardari drops out of NAM summit after PM’s blunt comment

Islamabad, June 18: President Asif Ali Zardari has decided to drop out of a proposed meeting with prime minister Manmohan Singh, apparently unhappy over his blunt public comments telling him that Pakistan’s soil should not be used for terrorist activities against India.

However, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit told the weekly news briefing today that prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani would lead the Pakistani delegation to next month’s NAM summit to be held in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Pilot dies at controls of US-bound passenger jet

Washington, June 18: A Continental airlines pilot died at the controls of a plane en route from Brussels to Newark, New Jersey, Thursday, according to media reports.

CNN quoted a statement from Continental that the 61-year-old captain of the flight died of natural causes while piloting the plane carrying 247 passengers.

The two first officers onboard who have extensive experience flying the Boeing 777, were preparing to land the plane in Newark, WABC-TV reported.

Hyderabad, June 18: Osmania University has released the post graduate courses entrance test results here on Wednesday. Admissions to PG courses of three other universities — Telangana University at Nizamabad, Palamuru University at Mahbubnagar and Mahatma Gandhi University at Nalgonda — will be done through these ranks.

RTC to issue free passes in colleges

Hyderabad, June 17: The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is making arrangements to issue free bus passes to students on the doorstep of colleges. Boy dies as goal post collapses

Chennai, June 17: A playful Class VIII student died when a movable goal post fell on his head in the playground of a private school at Washermenpet here early on Tuesday.

According to police sources, S. Karthik (13) of New Washermenpet had gone to the K.C. Sankaralinga Nadar Higher Secondary School on G.A. Road around 6 a.m. with some of his friends to play.

Enquiries revealed that when Karthik was trying to swing from one of the bars of the goal post, the entire metal frame came down on him.

He bled profusely and lost consciousness almost instantly.
