Railways to fill 1.7 lakh vacant posts

New Delhi, July 10: Despite the slowdown that has seen job cuts across sectors, the Indian Railways will fill 1.7 lakh vacant posts after reviewing the recruitment process, Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee said Friday.

The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) will review the hiring process and address regional aspirations and problems witnessed during recruitment in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Assam, Banerjee told the Rajya Sabha.

The vacancies will be filled once the review is over, she added.

The railways have a total sanctioned strength of nearly 15.67 lakh, the minister said.

Obama to visit India next year

L’Aquila (Italy), July 10: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will go to the US later this year while US President Barack Obama will visit India next year.

The invitations were exchanged and accepted by the two leaders at a brief “pull-aside” meeting during the G8-G5 summit meeting in this quake-hit Italian town Thursday, Indian Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon said here.

No dates have been finalised for both visits.

No bilateral meeting between Obama and Manmohan Singh took place during the three-day (July 8-10) summit here.

Satyam Raju’s judicial remand extended till July 22

Hyderabad, July 08: A city court Wednesday extended by two weeks the judicial remand of disgraced founder and former chairman of Satyam Computer Services B. Ramalinga Raju and other accused in the Rs.78 billion accounting fraud case.

The XIV Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate extended the remand of Raju, his brother B. Rama Raju, former chief financial officer Vadlamani Srinivas and five other accused till July 22.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the massive fraud, produced all eight accused in the court as their remand ended Wednesday.

DGP SSP Yadav appears before Human Rights Commission

Hyderabad, July 07:: The Director General of Police (DGP), Mr S S P Yadav, on Tuesday attended before the State Human Rights Commission following a complaint lodged by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) on Monday.

The DSP, Mr Madhava Reddy, a 1974 bath officer, has been in Vacancy Reserve (VR) – a term used for the police officials where they await posting – for the past 20 months. He was not even receiving his salary for the period, 20 months.

Undertrial criminal Habeeb Ahmed escapes from Nampally court premises

Hyderabad, July 07: An undertrial escaped from Nampally court premises where he was to be produced in connection with an attempt to murder case, police
said.

The undertrial identified as Habib Ahmed was arrested in a case of attempt to murder by Mirchowk and Moghalpura police about three months ago and was lodged at Chanchalguda jail, they said.

Ahmed who was brought alongwith three other accused to the court this afternoon was to be produced before an Additional Metropolitan magistrate, but fled immediately after his handcuffs were removed, police said.

Speeding Army Truck kills two in city

Hyderabad, July 06: A speeding Army truck killed two teenagers at Trimulgherry on Monday. Deepak Chahal, 16, a class X student and Abhishek Chowhan, 17, a hotel management student, died on the spot when the truck rammed into their motorcycle. Deepak and Abhishek were on their way to Abhishek’s college, said the Trimulgherry sub-inspector, Mr S. Anand. The bodies have been shifted to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem.

Pakistan still owes India Rs 300 crore as pre-partition debt

New Delhi, July 06: Pakistan is yet to clear a pre-partition debt of Rs 300 crore to India, which has been carrying forward year after year in its Budget
account as a “liability”.

The Budget books refer to this Rs 300 crore as “amount due from Pakistan on account of share of pre-partition debt.”

The amount was entered as a liability in the first Budget of independent India in 1950-51 and has been there ever since.

14-year-old girl killed in accident, residents torch buses

Kolkata, July 06: At least five buses were torched and several others damaged by a mob in West Bengal’s Howrah district after a 14-year-old girl was killed when she came under the wheels of a speeding bus Monday, police said.

“Riya Das, a class-VII student of Darnagar St Thomas High School in the district, was run over by a bus at Domjur locality. Soon after the accident, local residents went on the rampage and started ransacking several buses on the streets,” a police officer said.

The angry locals also set afire five buses and ransacked several roadside shops in the locality.

Jackson wanted to quit music for filmmaking

London, July 06: Pop legend Michael Jackson was desperate to quit music in the months leading to his death as he had picked up an interest in filmmaking, close friend Bryan Michael Stoller has revealed.

Stoller said the superstar, who was addicted to prescription drugs, was “like a bag of bones”, frail and tired, according to mirror.co.uk.

Heavy security for Jackson’s funeral

London, July 06: Michael Jackson fans who try to enter the venue of the King of Pop’s funeral in Los Angeles Tuesday without a ticket will be dealt with strictly, police said Monday.

Officials have warned fans to stay away from the star’s memorial service as they can face a hard response from police if found without a ticket, reports contactmusic.com.

Los Angeles Police Department Assistant chief Jim McDonnell insisted Jackson fans will get no sympathy from officers, who fear the crowds could turn violent.

The WHO says most H1N1 cases are mild, with many people recovering unaided.

As the summit opened, the UK alone was projecting more than 100,000 new cases of H1N1 a day by the end of the summer.

Software engineer held for abusive e-mails

Hyderabad, July 04: A software analyst landed behind the bars for allegedly sending abusive and obscene e-mails to his former lover, who is also a software professional.

Cyber Crime cell officials of the Hyderabad Detective Department arrested the accused, Ravichandra Vaidya, in Bangalore on Friday and brought him to the city. The 27-year-old software professional was remanded in judicial custody.
