Commonwealth suspends Fiji

London, September 01: Fiji was Tuesday suspended from the Commonwealth after its military rulers failed to commit themselves to staging elections this year.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma said the Pacific island-state stands “fully suspended from membership of the Commonwealth with immediate effect”.

“This is an announcement I make with deep regret – it is a step the Commonwealth is now obliged to take, and one that it takes in sorrow,” said Sharma.

Court dismisses plea of disqualified DUSU candidates

New Delhi, September 01:The Delhi High Court Tuesday dismissed the petition of five candidates who had challenged their disqualification from the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections, saying the Chief Election Officer had taken the decision in accordance with the rules.

Mahindra, TFA win in IFA Shield

Kolkata, September 01: Mahindra United prevailed over George Telegraph 2-0 while Tata Football Academy (TFA) finished 1-1 with United Sporting Club in their opening 114th IFA Shield group matches Tuesday.

Fresh clashes in Pakistan’s Swat valley; dozens killed

Mingora, September 01: Pakistani troops killed 15 militants in fresh clashes in Swat, the army said on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 45 in five days after a lull in the campaign to clear the Taliban out of the northwestern valley.

Security forces also launched an operation to flush out militants in the northwestern tribal region of Khyber, bordering Afghanistan, a government official said.

The army went on the offensive in Swat in late April and says it has killed over 2,000 militants, and lost 312 soldiers in the fighting. Independent casualty estimates are unavailable.

Krishna meets Brazil president ahead of IBSA summit

New Delhi, September 01: External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna Tuesday called on Brazilian President Lula da Silva ahead of the fourth IBSA summit of India, Brazil and South Africa, and stressed the need for accelerating connectivity between the three emerging economies.

Krishna emphasised India’s abiding commitment to IBSA, which symbolises the spirit of South-South cooperation, the external affairs ministry said here.

During his meeting, Krishna stressed the need for improved air links and enhancing investments for IBSA to achieve even more tangible results.

Train journey honours war-era saviour of Jewish children

Prague, September 01:A steam train left Prague Tuesday on a four-day journey to London in honour of Sir Nicholas Winton, a Briton who saved hundreds of Jewish children from deportation to Nazi concentration camps.

Winton, who turned 100 in May, saved 669 Jewish children from former Czechoslovakia on the eve of the World War II. He arranged to bring them to Britain by train and place them in foster families.

The Winton Train, as it is known, retraces the journey that had saved the children’s lives seven decades ago.

Iran ready for talks, make new proposals

Tehran, September 01: Iran is ready to hold a new round of talks with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (5+1), state media reported Tuesday.

Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Saeid Jalili told reporters in Tehran that the Iranian proposals have been updated and are ready to be presented to the 5+1 group.

Jalili added that the package of proposals dealt with political, economic and security issues and hoped that new talks could be resumed on the basis of the proposals.

Four men wanted for 211 murders arrested in Mexico

Ciudad Juarez (Mexico), September 01: Four men suspected of committing 211 murders in northern Mexico have been arrested, authorities said.

The killings occurred in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico’s most violent city, where the Juarez and Sinaloa drug cartels have been waging a turf war.

Cristian Enrique Franco Franco, 22, charged with killing 16 people, Edgar Flores Martinez, 30, who faces 87 murder counts, and Omar Castro Rivera, 28, who is suspected of killing 93 people, were arrested by the security forces.

British Queen to send off high-tech baton on epic journey to India

London, September 01: Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II is to launch a baton relay – one of the longest in history – in the presence of President Pratibha Patil to lift the curtain on the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, organisers said Tuesday.

The Queen’s Baton Relay, a traditional event that has launched every Commonwealth Game since 1958, will be held Oct 29 at Buckingham Palace in London.

BJP to chalk out assembly poll strategy Friday

New Delhi, September 01: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) central election committee will meet here Friday to chalk out a strategy for the assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh.

BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu made the announcement after a meeting of party colleagues including president Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj.

The three Congress-ruled states go to polls Oct 13 and the votes will be counted Oct 22. It will be the first electoral battle since the Congress retained power in the Lok Sabha elections of April-May.

Taiwan’s former first lady, children sentenced for corruption

Taipei, September 01: Four members of former Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian’s family were sentenced on corruption charges Tuesday but Chen himself is not scheduled to be sentenced until next week.

The Taipei district court sentenced ex-first lady Wu Shu-chen to one year in prison and the other three family members were given reduced sentences because they admitted their wrongdoing.

Christian Audigier buys Nicolas Cage’s home

London, September 01: Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage’s famous Bel Air property in Los Angeles has been purchased by fashion designer Christian Audigier.

Cage’s mansion has been in the market for sale since 2007. The actor slashed the asking price by half early this year in a bid to offload the property, reported contactmusic.com.

It is not known exactly what Audigier paid for the house.

“I believe it was a one-to-one deal. Christian knows Nicolas and they did the deal between themselves,” said a source.

Photographer electrocuted at Chaderghat

Hyderabad, Sepetember 01: A private photographer was electrocuted after he reportedly came in contact with a live electric wire at Chaderghat following the heavy rainfall. The photographer, Mujeebullah Khan (35), was returning home after midnight when he was electrocuted. Mujeebullah Khan, a resident of Toli Chowki used to run a photo studio at Dilsukhnagar.

Afzalgunj police said Mujeebullah also opened a ‘Harees’ selling centre in view of Ramzan. Mujeebullah was returning home after closing the Harees centre when he got electrocuted,” Afzalgunj police sub-inspector Razzak said.

Fashion designer Anand Jon sentenced for 59 years in jail

Los Angeles, Sept 01: Celebrity Indian-American fashion designer Anand Jon was sentenced to 59 years in prison by a court here for sexually assaulting aspiring models.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Wesley announced the judgement following a day-long passionate argument by 35-year-old Jon himself seeking a fresh trial.

In his ruling, Wesley said there were no new grounds for granting such a motion.

Jon showed no reaction as Judge Wesley said he should be incarcerated as long as possible for preying upon young girls and women.

Shriram EPC, US firm to make material handling equipment

Chennai, August 31: The city-based Shriram EPC, an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company, has decided to make material handling equipment in partnership with an American company, said a top company official here Monday.

“We have been building the material handling systems ourselves for turnkey contracts executed by us. We now intend to get into this business seriously,” Shriram managing director T. Shivaraman told reporters on the sidelines of the company shareholder’s meeting.

Businessman shot dead in Greater Noida

Greater Noida, August 31: A businessman was shot dead while another was critically injured when two motorcycle borne assailants fired at them here, police said Monday.

The incident occurred late Sunday in the Dadri area of Greater Noida.

“Vinod Goel, president of the Dadri Vyapar Sangh was travelling on a motorcycle with another businessman Manoj Goel, when two motorcycle borne assailants opened fire on them,” a police officer said.

Karzai’s vote shrinks, but he still leads in Afghan election

Kabul, August 31: Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s share of the vote in the hotly disputed Aug 20 presidential election shrank to 45.9 percent Monday, but still ahead of his nearest challenger by more than 12 percent, according to official figures.

Figures posted on the Independent Election Commission’s website showed that former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah garnered 33.3 percent of vote with ballots tallied from 47.8 percent of polling centres in the country.

India puts foreign secretaries talks on hold

New Delhi, August 31: Unhappy with Pakistan’s lack of action against the Mumbai attackers after the Sharm el-Sheikh summit meeting, India has decided to put on hold a meeting between the foreign secretaries who were expected to meet this month.

Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao is unlikely to go to Islamabad for talks with her Pakistani counterpart Salman Basheer before the foreign ministers of the two countries meet in New York later this month, official sources said.
