Woman killed in road accident in city

A woman died on the spot and another person received severe injuries when an unidentified vehicle hit the two
wheeler on which they were travelling here on Monday morning hours at Lotus Hospital at Lakdikapool.

The woman, who died in the accident, was a pillion rider and the person received severe injuries was driving the two wheeler. Police shifted the person who received severe injuries to the nearby hospital. The traffic halted for hours due to the accident on the Lakdikapool and Khairathabad road.

Man held for raping 61-year-old woman

A courier staff was today arrested for allegedly raping a 61-year-old woman at her flat at Powai in suburban Mumbai, police said.

Ashok Kumar (42) had gone to the victim’s apartment at around 12:30 pm yesterday and allegedly raped her before fleeing, they said.

The accused was known to the woman and used to frequent her residence at Military Road, police said.

Constable kills wife, daughter for dowry in AP

A police constable allegedly killed his wife and daughter here over dowry demand, police said on Sunday.

Constable T Venkatesh, attached to Tadwai police station under Kamareddy sub-division, hit his 28-year-old wife Vanaja and seven-year-old daughter with a blunt weapon at their house late last night causing multiple head-injuries following which both of them died on the spot.

Arms supplier among two arrested

A suspected illegal arms supplier and a buyer were arrested from Chirang district of lower Assam today.

The two were held by the district police and army personnel on a tip off.

The arms supplier hailed from Bihar and had come to Assam to sell a 9 mm pistol. The men were apprehended from Dhalgaon town while finalising the deal, police said.

Protests mark third anniversary of Telangana announcement

Protests in all three regions of Andhra Pradesh Sunday marked the third anniversary of the central government’s announcement to initiate the process of forming a separate state of Telangana.

While parties fighting for a Telangana state took out rallies in Hyderabad and nine other districts of the region, demanding the central government fulfill its word, some groups in parts of Seemandhra (Rayalaseema and Andhra regions) observed a black day, opposing any move to bifurcate the state.

Ninety percent of Indians are “idiots” who can easily be misled by mischievous elements in the name of religion, Press Council of India (PCI) chairperson Justice Markandey Katju claimed today.

Abstaining from voting on FDI in RS a ‘mistake’: TDP MP

Telugu Desam MP Y Sujana Choudary on Saturday apologised to the party workers even as he admitted that abstaining from voting in Rajya Sabha on FDI on Friday was a “mistake”.

“It was an unexpected mistake but a costly mistake. It should not have happened,” Choudary told newsmen after meeting TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu at Adilabad on Saturday evening.

The MP said he handed over a letter to Chandrababu explaining the reason for his absence from the House at the crucial time of voting.

Unknown burglars broke into the store room of Archaeological department and decamped with the Qutub Shahi era’s cannonballs (Top Ka Golas).

According to the sources one of the staff member of Archaeological Department went to store room located in BadaBazaar in Golconda Fort,to his surprise he found the door broken and the Iron made antique Cannonballs belonging to the Qutub Shahi rule went missing.

When the news of the burglary spread,locals gathered and informed the matter to the Golconda Police station.

AP High Court judge’s appointment comes under SC scanner

The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to scrutinise the appointment of an Andhra Pradesh High Court judge, Justice NV Ramana, despite pendency of a criminal case against him during his appointment, and sought from the Attorney General all documents pertaining to his elevation.

A bench of justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana Desai also expressed surprise that he was appointed on the advice of erstwhile Union Law Minister Ram Jethmalani, who, appearing as an advocate for the petitioner, was now seeking quashing of his elevation.

Concern over construction of temple within Charminar premises

A DMK member on Friday expressed concern in the Lok Sabha over construction of a temple within the premises of the famous Charminar in Hyderabad through alleged encroachment and asked the Centre to take appropriate action to prevent any communal tension.

Walmart under ED lens for alleged FEMA violation

The government on Thursday said the Enforcement Directorate is probing alleged violation of FDI regulations by cash and carry chain Walmart.

“Directorate of Enforcement has taken appropriate action to examine alleged contravention of provisions of Foreign Exchange

Management Act, 1999, (FEMA) by Walmart, on the basis of reference received from RBI,” Minister of State for Finance S S Palanimanickam said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

City Police arrest two more accused in mosque arson case

The City Police on Wednesday arrested two more persons who were allegedly involved in an arson case of Jamia Masjid at Chintal Bazar in Bollaram.

According to police, on December 2, a complaint was lodged by Jamia Masjid Committee’s president Nazeer Khan stating that some unknown persons set fire to the main door of the Chintal Bazar mosque by pouring diesel. The police began investigation after registering a case.
