Advocate General meets Governor

Advocate General Sudarshan Reddy on Sunday met Governor ESL Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan.

It is believed that he was summoned to advise the Governor on the matter related to the appointment of Information Commissioners. The State Government has sent the four names eelier rejected by the Governor. A legal opinion in this regard was sought, it is understood.

The Governor had earlier rejected four of the eight names and asked the government to reconsider as the four persons have political affiliations. As the government has repeated the same names, legal opinion was sought in the matter.

68,000 rape cases in 2009-11; only 16,000 convicted

Nearly 68,000 rape cases were registered across the country during 2009-11 but only 16,000 rapists were sentenced to prison, presenting a dismal picture of conviction of sexual offenders. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 24,206 rape cases were registered in India in 2011 but only 5,724 people were convicted for the crime.
Similarly, in 2010, 22,172 rape cases were registered while the number of convicted persons for the crime was 5,632.

A total of 21,397 rape cases were registered in 2009 but only 5,316 persons could be convicted.

No threat to Kiran Government, claims Sailajanath

Primary Education Minister S Sailajanath on Sunday claimed that there was no threat to the Kiran Kumar Reddy Government till 2014.

Talking to reporters in Markapuram of Prakasam district, Sailajanath dismissed reports that the Congress Government came in minority due to the expulsion of nine MLAs. He said that the government still enjoys majority in the House and there was no threat to Kiran Kumar Reddy Government.

Telangana people will punish Congress: Harish Rao

Telangana Rashtra Samithi MLA T Harish Rao condemned the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre for delaying the decision on formation of Telangana State.

Talking to reporters here on Sunday, Harish Rao accused the Congress party of ignoring the sentiments of people in the Telangana region. He said that the Congress has shown disrespect towards hundreds of youth who sacrificed their lives for the cause of Telangana.

However, he said that the people would teach Congress a fitting lesson during the next elections.

Haj applications to be recieved from Feb.6 to March 20

Haj application forms for the Haj 2013 will be issued from February 6 to March 20. Filled-in applications, along with all relevant documents like copies of passport, address proof, affidavit, SBI bank pay-in slip of Rs 300 per pilgrim and two photographs should be submitted in the office of the AP State Haj Committee on all working days between 10 am and 3 pm.

Trinamool MP ‘defends’ Mamata’ calls Salman Rushdie ‘Satan’

Trinamool Congress MP Sultan Ahmed on Friday called Salman Rushdie a “satan” and said West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had done the right thing, if she indeed blocked the writer’s visit to Kolkata.

“I have no knowledge of what actually happened. But if the chief minister has indeed ordered the police to block Rushdie’s entry to the city, then she has done the right thing. We don’t have anything to learn from Rushdie,” Ahmed said.

Consultation on separate Telangana is on: Congress

Congress today said consultation process with regard to separate Telangana demand is on at various levels, but refused to set any time-frame for arriving at a decision.

Union Minister Vayalar Ravi, who has been holding talks with agitated Congress leaders from Telangana region for nearly a year now, said the issue was still under discussion and the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and PCC chief would be called here for talks.

CM orders appoints CID chief to probe Shankar Rao’s incident

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy today directed the Director General of Police to order a high-level inquiry headed by Krishna Prasad, Additional Director General of Police, CID to go into all facts and circumstances in Police handling of Dr P. Shankar Rao, MLA during the course of investigation into a case registered against him at Neredmet Police Station of Cyberabad Commissionerate and take follow-up remedial measures based on the findings of inquiry report.

Shankar Rao obstructed cops from conducting probe:DCP

The Alwal Deputy Commissioner of Police has said Cantonment MLA Dr P. Shankar Rao had not only failed to cooperate with the police during investigation but also obstructed the policemen from performing their duties. He said because of his hostile attitude, they have registered a criminal case against the MLA. He also claimed that Shankar Rao was not at all arrested. He said police would start investigation after Shankar Rao’s health improved. Police had served notices on the MLA thrice in a land dispute case, he added.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde was apprised of the “highhanded” behavior of the police in arresting and dragging former minister Dr P. Shankar Rao om Thursday in Hyderabad.

YSRCP dares Congress to face assembly polls

Ridiculing Congress for blowing its own trumpet for getting majority in the heavily rigged cooperative elections, YSR Congress has dared the ruling party to face the assembly elections as the government has drifted into a minority with some of its legislators switching sides.

MIM corporator Khaja Bilal surrenders in communal cases

Khaja Bilal Ahmed, the MIM corporator from Rein Bazaar division, surrendered on Thursday before the 14th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Nampally, in connection with five communal cases that were registered against him in November last year. As the court sent him to 14-day judicial remand he was immediately shifted to Cherlapally jail.

Bilal Ahmed was named as the accused number one in cases that
were reported during the dispute that erupted over the reported expansion of the Bhagyalakshmi temple abutting Charminar.

Asghar Ali Acquitted in Faiyaz Baig escape case

The Seventh Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge at Nampally Criminal Court acquitted Mohammed Asghar Ali and his associate Abdul Bari in the MirzaFayazBaig escape episode on Monday.

Asghar Ali was arrested by the city police soon after he was acquitted by the Gujarat high court in the Haren Pandya murder case in 2011. Abdul Bari was also taken into custody then.

Oscar Fernandes justifies deferment on Telangana issue

Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes today justified the deferment by Congress and the government a decision on Telangana statehood issue saying it is “sensitive” and all stakeholders need to be consulted.

Centre lacks concern for Telangana people: TRS chief

Hitting out at the ruling Congress for not coming out with a favourable decision on the separate Telangana demand, TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday alleged that the Centre lacked even the basic concern for the people of the region.

“Telangana demand has been there since 1966. It has been raised consistently. What further consultations, they will hold? How many committees, meetings have been organised for taking a decision,” he said, speaking at the conclusion of a 36-hour-long ‘samar diksha’ protest here this evening.

Penalties imposed on 100 PIOs for not providing info

The Andhra Pradesh Information Commission has imposed penalties of Rs 6.32 lakh on 100 Public Information Officers (PIOs) over the last six months for not furnishing information to the appellants.

State Information Commissioner S Prabhakar Reddy heard 1,880 appeals from July to December 2012 filed by the appellants, who had not received information sought by them.

Hyderabad bizman moves HC against screening of Viswaroopam

A writ petition was filed in the Andhra Pradesh High Court today seeking ban on screening of actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan’s movie ‘Viswaroopam’ for allegedly “hurting religious sentiments of Muslim community”.

The writ was filed by a city-based businessman Mohammed Haji.

Contending that the movie was “anti-Islamic, blasphemous and hurting to the religious sentiments of Muslim community”, the petitioner has sought ban on screening and suspension of its exhibition.
