The study from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute revealed that parasites can rapidly change the proteins on the surface of their host cells during the course of a single infection in order to hide from the immune system.

Bank official rapes woman on pretext of job

A bank official allegedly raped a woman on the pretext of arranging a job for her son, filmed the act and threatened to post it on the internet if she informed the police, police said here today.

According to a complaint lodged yesterday at the Civil Lines police station, the woman had approached the bank official while he was posted at Ram Nagar in Uttarakhand, police said.

Later the official was transfered to Rampur and he called up the woman and demanded Rs 8 lakh for the job. The woman paid him Rs 6 lakh, but he did nothing about the job, they said.

Another bomb hoax call in Gurgaon

A caller kept the Gurgaon police on its toes for the second day Thursday with a call about a bomb planted at a shopping complex here which later turned out to be a hoax.

The Arcadia shopping complex in South City on Sohna road was evacuated after the police received the bomb hoax call. The police confirmed the call was a hoax after a five-hour search.

Police received a similar call about a bomb being planted at a Delhi Metro station and a market in Gurgaon Wednesday which too was found to be a hoax after a four-hour search.

Both the calls were made from the same number.

Three Class VII students kill school teacher

Three students of class VII were today arrested for allegedly killing their school teacher in Tungri Mohalla area in West Singhbhum district, police said.

The three students of St Xavier Boys School allegedly axed their teacher Jasline Topno to death on Tuesday because he had warned them to give up smoking and drinking or he else would complain to their parents, Circle Inspector (sadar) Sudhir Kumar told reporters.

India is taking counter steps to deal with the growing influence of China in neighbouring countries, particularly in their seas, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said in Lok Sabha, noting that modernisation of Navy was going on “quite well”.

“We are responding. India is taking counter measures along maritime areas,” he said during Question Hour.

Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif has reportedly approved the death warrants of six terrorists, pending execution.

The terrorists were convicted by a Field General Court Martial ( FGCM). Sources said that they are expected to be hanged in the next 48 hours, reported the Dawn.

Sri Lankan court extends remand of 38 Indian fishermen till December 31

A Sri Lankan court has extened the remand of 38 Tamil Nadu fishermen to December 31.

They were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy a few months ago.

The Oorkavalthurai Magistrate extended the remand, according to the president of the Rameswaram Fishermen Organization.

The fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on different occasions for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and entering into Sri Lankan waters for poaching near Katchatheevu Island, reports the Lanka Page.

No roll-back of excise duty hike on diesel, petrol: Finance minister

The government on Tuesday said it has no plans to roll-back the recent hike in excise duty on diesel and petrol.

“No, Sir,” minister of state for finance Jayant Sinha said in a written reply when asked whether the government would review and withdraw the increase in central excise duties.

The government recently hiked excise duty in two tranches on diesel as well as petrol in order to garner about Rs 10,500 crore in the current financial year.

Cold wave intensifies in northern, central India

Cold wave conditions and foggy weather disrupted normal life in central and northern India on Tuesday. After New Delhi and Kanpur witnessed light rain showers, the temperature went down, adding to the woes of daily wage labourers and homeless people as they have no alternative to fight the chill.

A resident of Kanpur, Kishan, said due to rains the cold has become unbearable. People of New Delhi also had a tough time dealing with the cold as mercury dipped to 10 degrees Celsius.
