Girl allegedly killed by her father over love affair

In a case of honour killing, a 19-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her father and other family members on New Year’s Eve following a heated argument,who were opposed to her relationship with a boy belonging to a different community in Baroda village of the district.

The teenager was later buried by the family members.Police recovered the body on Thursday and registered a case of murder against the four family members including her father Hasan, said the police.

While two of the accused identified as Hasan and Sattar have been arrested, two others were absconding.

Oil prices down in thin pre-holiday trade

Crude edged lower in thin pre-holiday trade on Wednesday ahead of the release of a key US supply report, as analysts predicted a rebound in prices in the new year after shedding nearly 50 per cent since June.

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for February delivery fell 38 cents to $53.74 while Brent crude for February eased 49 cents to $57.41 in mid-morning trade.

Trading volumes were thin with many dealers away ahead of the New Year’s Day holiday on Thursday. Financial markets in Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, and Thailand are closed on Tuesday.

Maruti’s December sales jump 20.8 pc; shares up

Country’s largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Thursday reported a 20.8 per cent increase in total sales in December at 1,09,791 units.

The car maker had reported sales of 90,924 units in the same month last year.

Following the release of strong sales numbers, shares of Maruti were trading 0.50 per cent higher at Rs 3,344 in an otherwise weak general market.
The company said its domestic sales increased by 13.3 per cent during the month to 98,109 units as against 86,613 units in December, 2013.

Six Engineering Students died in accident while celebrating new year

Tragedy struck as six engineering students returning after New Year revelry were killed when their car and an LPG tanker collided in the wee hours of the day at nearby Chathannur.

According to police, the victims, all men in third year of B.Tech, were heading to their campus after the New Year celebrations at the beach resort Varkala in neighbouring Thiruvananthapuram District.

All of the six, who died on the spot, were students of a private engineering college here.

School Teacher Held for Molesting 15 Boys in China

A 32-year-old primary school teacher has been detained by police for allegedly molesting 15 boys in southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

Zhang, who taught Chinese language to grade four students at Lima Primary School in Guichao Township, Funing County, confessed to police that he has molested 15 boys in the past two years, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today.

The school’s principal has been dismissed from his post by the county education department.

Medical checkups of the 15 boys suggest none of them suffered physical injury, the report said.

Charges against Amit Shah dropped in Sohrabuddin encounter case

In a major relief to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah, a special CBI court on Tuesday discharged him in the case of Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter killing in 2005.

“I am of the opinion that the inference drawn by CBI is not accepted in totality and he (Shah) cannot be charged as an accused,” special CBI Judge M.B. Gosavi said in a brief order pronounced in the court. Details of the judgement will be available later.

The Rajya Sabha member said, “This sought of discharging is what I would call a real fake encounter where the cases have been dropped despite all the evidence.”

Gang caughtfor duping investors

Six members of an inter-state gang of online fraudsters, who allegedly cheated depositors of money to the tune of Rs five crore by promising higher rate of interest, were arrested from Karnataka by Cyber Crime Police of Cyberabad.

The gang members, who were operating from Goa, were arrested yesterday, police said, adding that around Rs 40 lakh cash and documents of property worth about Rs 1 crore were seized from them.

Swine flu patients are missing

Two swine flu patient who are under treatment in a private hospital went missing. The 53-year-old patient,from Ranga Reddy district, was put on a ventilator on Sunday.

He was one among the six patients who tested positive for the H1N1 virus on Saturday. He remained untraceable despite efforts of the Hyderabad district surveillance team.

Dense fog hits air, train traffic in Delhi, cold wave continues

A massive blanket of fog settled over the national capital this morning, severely disrupting air and rail traffic with 27 flights delayed and nearly 90 trains running late.

Cold weather conditions continued to prevail in the national capital with the minimum temperature being recorded at 4.5 degrees celsius, three notches below normal.

The visibility according by MeT departments officials was 500 meters at 5.30am which decreased significantly to 50 meters at 8.30am.

Sensex gains 82 points in early trade

The benchmark BSE Sensex rose over 82 points in early trade on Tuesday on increased buying by funds and retail investors amid acceleration in economic reforms after the government recommended promulgation of an ordinance making significant changes in the Land Acquisition Act.

Rising for the third straight session, the BSE 30-share barometer rose by 82.57 points, or 0.30 per cent, to 27,478.30.

The National Stock Exchange index Nifty also edged higher by 21.95 points, or 0.26 per cent, to 8,268.25.

Rupee down 10 paise against dollar in early trade

Continuing its slide for the fifth consecutive day, the rupee lost 10 paise to over 13-month low of 63.77 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market due to sustained year-end demand for the American currency from importers.

Forex dealers said the dollar’s strength against other currencies in the global market also put pressure on the rupee but sustained rise in domestic equities capped the fall.

The domestic currency had closed lower by 10 paise to 63.67 against the Greenback following sustained dollar demand from importers.
