Courts Can’t Ask States to Provide Quota in Promotions: SC

The Constitution enables governments to provide for reservation of SC/ST category employees even in promotions but courts cannot direct them to make such a provision, the Supreme Court has ruled.

A bench of justices J Chelameswar and A K Sikri, however, said the aggrieved employees, belonging to SC/ST categories, can themselves seek redressal from the court if they are denied the rightful promotions.

10-year-old suicide bomber attacks Nigerian market

At least 16 people were killed in a bomb attack in Nigerian city of Maiduguri on Saturday, media reports said.

According to reports, the suicide bomber, who triggerred the blast, was a 10-year-old girl. No group has so far claimed responsibility for Saturdays attack, BBC reported.

The extent of damage was still being ascertained and rescue efforts still going on at the place of the explosion, Jibrin said. He said official casualty figure will be given after ongoing rescue operation.
“Security operatives have cordoned off the area,” the police spokesman added.

Saudi Blogger Gets 1000 Whip Lashes in Public for ‘Insulting Islam’

Saudi Arabia today publicly flogged a blogger sentenced to 1,000 lashes for insulting Islam, with Amnesty International condemning his punishment as a “vicious act of cruelty”.

A Saudi court in September upheld a sentence of 10 years in prison as well as the flogging for Raef Badawi, who has been behind bars since June 2012.

The 30-year-old received a first instalment of 50 lashes today and is expected to have 20 weekly whipping sessions until his punishment is complete.

Major disinvestments before March 31: Jaitley

The government will go for major disinvestment in the next two-and-a-half months and will strive to stick to the fiscal deficit target of 4.1 per cent in the current year, finance minister Arun Jaitley said on Friday.

“As far as disinvestment figures are concerned, we still have close to three months left. And I can only tell you this is going to be period of great activity as far as disinvestment is concerned,” he said at a CNBC-TV18 award function.

Brother-in-law throws acid on woman after failed rape attempt

A woman sustained burn injuries when her brother-in-law allegedly threw acid on her after a failed rape attempt at Khudda village in Chapar area of the district, police said on Friday.

The woman, who sustained burn injuries, was admitted to the district hospital, said Deputy SP Arun Kumar.

In her statement to the police, the woman has alleged that her brother-in-law identified as Jahangir, tried to rape her when they were returning to the village on a bike.

Upon resisting, he allegedly threw acid on her and fled from the spot, police said.

The Forum for IT Employees (FITE) on Wednesday filed a petition to the Labour Commissioner and asked him to bring justice to the unfairly terminated employees.

CI-Cell nabbe Nazeer Ahmed for attacking Kar Sevaks

Nazeer Ahmed who was an active member of Fashiuddin gang nabbed by Counter Intelegence Cell yesterday who are involved in attacking Kar Sevaks after the Babri Masjid Demolition in 1992.

According to police Fashiuddin and Nazeer form a gang to target Nandraj Goud and papaiah Goud who took part in the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992. Fashiuddin and others were killed in an encounter while Nazeer was able to fly to Saudi.

Nazeer was involved in many cases registered at Homayath Nagar and Abids police stations in 1993.

e-Challan system for Hyderabad and Cyberabad police

Telangana Home Minister N.Narsimha Reddy has launched an integrated e-Challan system for on Thursday at Cyberabad Commissionerate. He termed this system as a coordination between higher authority and police department.

This system enables two Commissionerate to have common platform and all violations and crimes can be integrated under a single platform. Mr. Narsimha promised to extend this system all over the state.

KCR hops cost 4.92 crore

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s VVIP tours in the State have cost the taxpayer Rs 4.92 crore in two-and-a-half months. Of the total expenditure of `4.92 crore, `1 lakh is ‘planned’ expenditure and the rest non-plan, according to the State government.

Twelve Killed, 20 Injured as RTC busbus fell into a valley: Anantapu

Twelve people were killed when a bus fell in into a gorge in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district today. Most of them were students. The driver of the APSRTC bus with registration number AP28Z 1053 lost control over the wheel while trying to avoid hitting an auto rickshaw.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 AM when the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus was going to Penukonda from Madakasira in the district where it fell into a valley, 20 feet below, Anantapur District Superintendent of Police Rajsekhar Babu said.

Coal India Shares Gain 3% as Workers End Strike

Shares of Coal India gained nearly three per cent today as coal workers called off their nationwide strike after the government assured trade unions that the state-run CIL will not be privatised and the employees’ interests will be protected.

CIL’s scrip climbed 2.69 per cent to Rs 385 at the BSE. On the NSE, it rose by 2.74 per cent to Rs 385.

Dalit families threaten to convert after being denied entry

Ten Dalit families of Jamalpur village here have said they will convert to Islam if they are not allowed to worship at the historic Lav Kush Janmabhoomi temple at Baleni.

In a memorandum submitted by the villagers to District Magistrate (DM) Pankaj Yadav and the SSP on January 5, they sought permission to worship in the temple by January 26 and threatened to convert otherwise.

Shyam Singh, a village resident, alleged that the priest had stopped him and ten other Balmiki families from worshipping at the temple on October 8 last year following which they lodged a complaint with the DM.

We do not associate with Sakshi Maharaj’s views: BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao on Thursday said that the party did not associate with Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj’s controversial remarks adding that the latter’s views were personal.

“We had made it very clear that those comments were Sakshi Maharaj’s own views. These are not the views of BJP or the Government of India. The party does not associate itself with these remarks,” said Rao.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Nalin Kohli too disassociated the party’s thinking from the leader’s statement.

Actress Bipasha Basu, who has turned 35, says she’s only keen to do roles that suit her and that she’s not game to essaying a college girl on the big screen.

SBH will hikes the term deposits from 8.60% to 8.75%

The State Bank of Hyderabad has increased the rates of interest on term deposits from 8.6 to 8.75 for periods ranging from five to ten years with effect from January 6.

The SBH also launches a new recurring deposit, SBH-KUBER Monthly, for 36 months where a customer depositing Rs2,500 a month will get Rs 1,02,649 at 8.85 per cent interest per annum. However, the 400-day SBH-KUBER deposit scheme will continue at 8.85 per cent per annum.

The deposits can also be made in multiples of Rs 2,500 during 36 months.

Egyptian President calls for ‘religious revolution’ to fight extremism

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has called for a “religious revolution” asking Muslim leaders across the world to battle the rising extremism.

According to CNN, he said that they do not have the time to lose now while addressing the crowd in a speech at the Prophet Mu?ammad’s birthday celebration that coincided with the New Year’s Day.

El-Sisi, elected in May after leaving the military to run for the office, stressed on the fact that they need a ” religious revolution “.

AAP urges EC to probe anomalies in Delhi voters list

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal met Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath and Delhi’s Chief Electoral Officer Chandra Bhushan Kumar seeking removal of anomalies in the voters list of the national capital.

The AAP had on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission claiming that around four lakh fake voters are in the national capital.

The party also demanded action against booth level officers for the discrepancies in the voters list.

Indian student deported from US for threatening women online

A 24-year-old Indian student has been deported from the US after he was convicted of cyberstalking for posting threatening comments on social media to carry out a campus shooting.

Keshav Mukund Bhide, a former student at the University of Washington (UW), cannot return to the US for ten years.

Bhide was arrested in June after he threatened women at the university in the comments section on YouTube.

He also defended the actions of Elliot Rodger, a college student who killed six people at the University of California, Santa Barbara in May and then killed himself too.
