Indians can invest up to $2,50,000 annually overseas

Encouraged by foreign exchange reserves touching record levels, the Reserve Bank on Tuesday doubled the annual overseas investment ceiling for individuals to $2,50,000.

“On a review of the external sector outlook and as a further exercise in macro-prudential management, it has been decided to enhance the limit under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) to $2,50,000 per person per year,” the RBI said in its Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy Statement.

Ebola threat: 9 year old Nigerian girl held at Airport

A 10-year-old girl from Nigeria was held at the Nedumbassery airport on suspicion of possible Ebola infection.

“The girl, who had arrived from Dubai by an Emirates flight, displayed certain traits which were consistent with the guidelines issued to us. Following the standard protocol, we admitted her to the Ernakulam General Hospital for Ebola tests,” the airport authorities said.

Police officers in Cyberabad who are supposed to take up the passport verification job were on Monday given tablets, so that the verification of Passports can be done only in 3 days.

Regional passport officer Ashwini Sattaru, along with Telangana IG Intelligence B Shivadhar Reddy and Cyberabad police commissioner CV Anand handed over around 70 tabs for doing the job expeditiously. It is expected to reduce the time taken for verification from 13 days to three days.

15 injured in fire near Lady Dufferin Hospital

Around 15 people have been injured in a massive fire that broke out near Lady Dufferin Hospital in Kolkata’s Bowbazaar area this evening.

As many as twenty fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to bring the flames under control.

The exact cause of the fire is not known yet.

Rupee rises 6 paise vs dollar ahead of RBI policy

Ahead of RBI credit policy, the Indian rupee on Monday ended 6 paise higher at 61.80 against the American currency on fag-end selling pressure from banks and exporters due to a weak dollar in the overseas markets.

The rupee resumed lower at 62.00 per dollar as against last weekend’s level of 61.86 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex). It moved down further to 62.01 per dollar on initial dollar demand from banks.

However, it recovered immediately to end at 61.80 per dollar on selling of dollars by banks and exporters, showing a gain of six paise or 0.10 per cent.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has asked officials to come up with a proposal on full-scale for cleanup operation of Hussainsagar this summer and take steps to ensure that drains carrying sewage were diverted from the lake.

The work should be taken up on a war-footing as the required funds is on hand, Rao said, while reviewing the civic programmes of Hyderabad at an official meeting here on Saturday.

Road mishap in AP, 11 killed

Roads in AP turned red on Sunday with accidents at different places, at least five persons were killed in a lorry-auto-rickshaw collision at Pedapalaparru village under Mudinepalli mandal. Four more injured were admitted to the Government Hospital in Gudivada.

In yet another accident, two persons were killed when the car in which they were traveling hit a roadside tree at Pitchaturu village in Chittoor district.

JNTU disaffiliates 803 B.Tech, 7 B.Pharmacy courses

In a major blow to private engineering and pharmacy colleges in Telangana, The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad on Saturday disaffiliated 807 BTech courses of the 143 engineering colleges for 2014-2015 academic years.

Similarly, out of the eight B Pharmacy programmes offered in integrated campuses, seven programmes have been disaffiliated for 2014-2015 academic year. The courses were disaffiliated by the University failing to meet essential requirements like qualified faculty and adequate infrastructure.

Nine Indians held at Turkey-Syria border, deported

Nine Indians from three southern states were detained at the Turkey-Syria border and deported to India where they were being questioned on their motives, police said Saturday.

“Turkish authorities detained the nine-member Indian group at the border while attempting to cross over to Syria and deported them to India late Friday,” city Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi said in a statement here.

Japan launches intelligence satellite

Japan Sunday launched a backup information gathering satellite (IGS), the country`s first launch of this year.

The satellite is equipped with a radar spy instrument capable of peering through clouds, darkness and camouflage to obtain high-resolution imagery of the Earth`s surface. But the satellite`s exact capabilities were not disclosed, Xinhua reported.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. launched the spy satellite aboard a H-2A rocket from Tanegashima Space Centre in Kagoshima prefecture.

Thirty years after the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi, a fresh probe is likely with a government-appointed committee recommending constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for the same, a move seen by the Congress as an attempt to woo voters ahead of polls here.

The committee headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice (retd) GP Mathur, which was set up on December 23 last year to look into the possibility of re-investigation of the 1984 riots, submitted its report to Home Minister Rajnath Singh last week, sources said.

IS fighters admit defeat in Syrian town of Kobane

The Islamic State group has acknowledged for the first time that its fighters have been defeated in the Syrian town of Kobane and vowed to attack the town again.

In a video released by the pro-IS Aamaq News Agency yesterday, two fighters said the airstrikes by the US-led coalition were the main reason why IS fighters were forced to withdraw from Kobane.

On Monday, activists and Kurdish officials said the town was almost cleared of IS fighters, who once held nearly half of the town.
