According to a top scientist, the earth sciences ministry is finalising a contract with the International Seabed Authority(ISA) to formally enable India exploit 10,000 sq kms of the Indian Ocean seabed for minerals including gold, silver and platinum.

Dhaka-Kolkata train firebombed in troubled Bangladesh

Passengers on a train coming from Kolkata on Sunday had a narrow escape when miscreants hurled petrol bombs at the ‘Maitree Express’ train in Bangladesh on the first day of a fresh 72-hour strike enforced by the opposition.

The attack is the latest in a spate of political violence that has claimed 75 lives so far in Bangladesh, where the opposition BNP has clamped an indefinite countrywide blockade.

However, no casualty was reported in the incident that occurred near the Iswardi Railway Station at Pabna, police said.

An FIR has been lodged on the complaint of former minister Bima Bharti against Minister Vinay Bihari and MLA Sumit Singh for threatening her with dire consequences if she did not support Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi Manjhi, station house officer (SHO) of Sachivalya police station Amrendra Kumar Jha told PTI.

NEW DELHI: Stock markets on Monday would react to exit polls that are predicting an AAP win in the Delhi assembly elections and trading this week is expected to be volatile, say market experts.

All the exit polls have predicted a majority for the AAP with one of them giving it as high as 53 seats in the 70-member House.

BSNL, MTNL not to participate in upcoming spectrum auction

State-run telecom firms BSNL and MTNL will not participate in the upcoming spectrum auction, from which the government targets to raise over Rs 1 lakh crore.

The chairmen and managing directors of the two PSU’s, BSNL’s Anupam Srivastava and MTNL’s P K Purwar, told PTI that the telecom firms will not participate in the auction.

Srivastava said there is no need for additional spectrum at this point of time.
The public sector firms had not participated in the previous auctions held in November 2012, March 2013 and February 2014.

Uttar Pradesh: 10-year-old boy arrested for eve-teasing minor school girl

A 10-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly eve-teasing a minor girl outside her school premises in Bagpat, police said on Sunday.

According to the complaint filed by girl’s family, the boy waited outside her institution and allegedly eve-teased the fourth grade student during the after-hours of school for a period of time.

The accused misbehaved with the other school girls too. He had been eve-teasing the victim for a long time, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Vidyasagar Mishra said.

Indian helpline in UAE receives 70,000 calls in 4 years

A toll-free helpline set up by India to deal with problems of 20 lakh Indians in the UAE especially the blue-collar workers has received almost 70,000 calls since its inception four years ago.

The Indian Workers Resource Centre, an outsourced facility, was inaugurated by then president Pratibha Patil during her visit to the UAE in November 2010.

The 24×7 toll-free helpline 800INDIA (80046342) now receives an average of 70 calls a day compared to the 40 calls of late, Khaleej Times reported, citing IWRC officials.

Now, Google’s ‘Device Experts’ will answer users’ queries about its devices via video chat

The Google Play store for devices like Nexus phones and tablets will now allow users to start a video chat with a salesperson who can answer any question about Chromebooks, Android Wear, or other devices that Google sells directly through the site.

The service, which is built off of Google’s video lesson platform Helpouts, is titled Google Device Experts, reported The Verge.

The assistants however, will not be available for tech support now.

Henderson found in his research that if a single mother has a higher level of education, then day care can be harmful to a child’s cognitive development, while children of single mothers with less education actually benefit from being in day care.

IDCO signs pact with Indian Rare Earth Ltd in Odisha

As part of its diversification programme, the state owned Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) today signed an MoU with public sector Indian Rare Earth Ltd (IRE) to set up a mineral separation plant in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

The cost of this project is pegged at Rs 450 crore. IDCO CMD Vishal K Dev and IRE CMD RN Patra have executed the MoU at the state secretariat here in the presence of Industries minister Devi Prasad Mishra.

Gold short lived its overnight short covering gains and dropped at the domestic bullion market here today on stockists selling driven by massive unwinding at the global level.

Silver also slid owing to hectic speculative selling and lower industrial offtake.

Standard gold (99.5 purity) fell by Rs 415 to end at Rs 27,290 per 10 grams from Friday’s closing level of Rs 27,705.

Pure gold (99.9 purity) also dipped by a similar margin of Rs 415 to finish at Rs 27,440 per 10 grams from Rs 27,855.

UN’s Resolution to Put Check to ISIS Group Financing

The UN Security Council plans to adopt a resolution next week aimed at halting funding to Islamic State militants from oil, antique trafficking and ransoms, diplomats have said.

A draft text, drawn up by Russia, was distributed to the 15 member countries ahead of closed-door discussions.

The resolution was completed after dialogue with the United States and Europe. It draws largely on previous UN sanctions on organisations and individuals affiliated with Al-Qaeda, particularly the freezing of assets and an arms embargo.

Govt to infuse Rs 6,990 crore in 9 public sector banks, SBI leads the pack

Government will soon infuse Rs 6,990 crore in nine public sector banks including SBI, Bank of Baroda (BoB), Punjab National Bank (PNB) for enhancing their capital and meeting global risk norms.

This is the first tranche of capital infusion for which the government had allocated Rs 11,200 crore in the Budget for 2014-15.

Among the beneficiaries, largest public sector lender SBI leads the pack with a capitalization of Rs 2,970 crore, followed by BoB Rs 1,260 crore, PNB Rs 870 crore and Canara Bank Rs 570 crore.

China All Set to Build World’s Highest Basketball Court

China plans to build the world’s highest basketball court, 3,658 metres above sea level, in Tibet to promote the game.

The new basketball court would be a breakthrough in the development of sports in Tibet and will bring greater diversity to locals’ leisure activities, Xie Yuteng, an official said.

The home court for the local team will be built in Lhasa, 3,658 metres above sea level, making it the world’s highest basketball home court, state-run China Daily reported.

City conjoined twins looking at UK doctors for new life

A team of doctors from Great Almond Hospital in United Kingdom are scheduled to examine the conjoined twin sisters, Veena and Vani on Saturday.

Veena and Vani are under treatment at city based Niloufer Hospital. The twins had been suffering by birth, almost from 11 years.

According to doctors, the Doctors team from UK will examine the duo. Once doctors give a nod for operation, the conjoined twins would be flown to UK.

It is reported that Dr David and Dr Jeelani from UK have successfully performed a similar surgery in the past.
