Five children from across India living in shelter homes in the national capital have been reunited with their families, Delhi Police said here on Wednesday.

“Five children aged between 11 and 16 years were united recently with their respective families,” Joint Commissioner of Police Ravindra Yadav said.

“The children belong to Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi,” Yadav said.

One billion smokers in the world now: study

One billion people in the world smoke tobacco while 240 million have an alcohol use disorder, according to a new study that compiled the most up-to-date evidence on addictive disorders globally.

The study shows that almost 5 per cent of the world’s adult population (240 million people) have an alcohol use disorder and more than 20 per cent (1 billion people) smoke tobacco.

Getting good data on other drugs such as heroin and cannabis is much more difficult but for comparison the number of people injecting drugs is estimated at around 15 million worldwide, researchers said.

Harbhajan Kaur Dheer, 62, at a ceremony at the Victoria Hall at Ealing Council on Tuesday became the Mayor of Ealing Council after succeeding councillor Tej Ram Bagha.

“It is a great privilege and challenge to be the Mayor of Ealing Council in London. I have no illusions about the task ahead. But if I can cope up with Ranjit at home I can climb even the Everest,” Kaur said.

Narayan Sai case: Eyewitness Mahendra Chawla shot by unidentified gunman

The main eye witness in the Narayan Sai case, Mahendra Chawla, was shot at on Wednesday in Panipat by an unidentified gunman. He was later admitted to a hospital and is said to be critical.

On April 16, the Gujarat High Court had granted conditional bail of three weeks to Narayan Sai, son of self-proclaimed godman Asaram Bapu.

Sai was accused of committing repeated sexual assaults between 2002 and 2005 on a woman who was living at his Surat ashram, following which he was booked under various sections of the IPC, including rape, unnatural sex, molestation, wrongful confinement etc.

American researchers have created certain chemical compounds that could lead to better therapies for people with psychiatric disorders from plant species traditionally used by healers in Nigeria to treat people with mental illness.

“After billions of years of evolution, nature has given us a great starting point for generating new types of molecules that could end up being used as innovative drugs,” said lead author of the paper Karl Scheidt from Northwestern University.

A Lashkar-e-Toiba operative, who also worked for Indian Mujahideen and is wanted in several terrorist cases, has been arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police from Lucknow.

According to police, Irfan was involved in several train blasts across the country post the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992.

He was later arrested and, after spending nearly eight years in jail, was released on parole, which he later jumped and had since been on the run, they added.
