High Court orders FIR against teacher who fails to write essay on cow

The J&K High Court made a teacher write an essay on cow and solve a class IV maths problem in an open court and ordered slapping a case against him when he failed, inviting strong observations from the judge who wanted “soulless” authorities to close down education “tuck shops”. The direction came yesterday when Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar was hearing a petition challenging appointment of Mohammad Imran Khan as Rehbar-e-Taleem (education guide) teacher in a school in south Kashmir.(Also read: Teacher held for molesting schoolgirls in Delhi)

Jilted lover sets girl on fire in Saidabad

An 18-year-old girl was set ablaze by a ‘lover’ on Friday morning in Saidabad for refusing to marry him.

According to Saidabad police the victim who is an MBA student had insisted the girl (who is also an MBA student) to marry him, but the the girl refuses the proposal.

Snubbed by her refusal, the youth allegedly set her on fire. Even as the two were engaged in a conversation, the boy doused her with petrol and set her ablaze. Later the boy also set himself on fire.

Both have been admitted to hospital with severe burn injuries and the girl condition is reported to be critical.

Moderate tremors of magnitude 5.7 felt in Nepal, West Bengal shaken too

Weeks after two major earthquakes, that struck within weeks, rattled the Himalayan nation, moderate tremors with magnitude 5.7 on Richter Scale were recorder on Saturday, which shook Bihar too.

The tremors were also felt in India, which includes north Bengal and Sikkim today evening at 5.05 pm.

According to the Indian Meterological Department in Sikkim, the tremor lasted for 10.5 seconds.

Meanwhile, seven mild tremors recorded near Kathmandu this morning with magnitude around 4 on the Richter Scale kept people on edge in quake-Nepal.

Commerce minister to meet tea industry stakeholders in Bengal

Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman will meet the stakeholders in the tea industry in Siliguri in north Bengal on Sunday to understand the problems of the industry.

“She will be visiting two tea gardens in the state and will hold meetings with the stakeholders in the tea industry on Sunday to discuss the problems in the trade”, director of tea development at Tea Board of India S. Soundararajan told IANS.

He is accompanying the minister on her visit to the tea estates in north Bengal.

Indian-American Boy Wins Prestigious Young Scientist Award

An 18-year-old Indian-American boy has won the prestigious Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award in the US for inventing a device that quickly shuts down undersea oil spills.

Karan Jerath of Friendswood, Texas, claimed USD 50,000 top prize yesterday at this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (IISEF).

Jerath was also one of the five students selected for the Intel and Indo-US Science and Technology Forum Visit to India Award.

Jerath designed a sturdy device that can collect the oil, gas and water spewing from a broken well on the seafloor.

Modi inaugurates Gandhian centre at Fudan University

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Centre for Gandhian and Indian Studies at Fudan University here in China.

“Historic launch of Centre for Gandhian and Indian Studies at Fudan University by PM @narendramodi,” tweeted external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup.

Two Chinese students recited verses from the Bhagwad Gita at the event.

“Chinese students reciting verses from the Bhagwad Gita at opening ceremony of Centre for Gandhian & Indian Studies,” Swarup tweeted.

NRIs in Dallas came forward to fund the Water Grid project for 20 fluoride-affected villages in Nalgonda district, he said adding the NRIs would adopt these 20 villages.

Chairman of the test V.S.S. Kumar, in a statement here on Friday, said the final key of the EAMCET would be released along with the results.

Out of the 1,70,440 candidates applied for the engineering stream, 1,62,807 appeared for the exam held on May 8.

Of the 69,840 candidates applied for the medicine stream, 66,428 took the exam. A total of 95.39 per cent appeared in engineering stream 95.05 per cent appeared in the medicine stream.

Deen-O-Duniya: 129 Madarasa girls enrolled into ZP school

129 Musli, girl students who were studying in a Madarasa were got enrolled into a Zilla Parishad Urdu school at Dahifal in Shevgaon Taluka of Ahmednagar district.

Zilla Parishad officials, along with enthusiastic teachers, convinced the Maulana to send the girls to the school. “It was a great achievement for us since we were trying to convince Maulana Sayyad Nasir for almost six months to send the girls for formal education, along with the religious education,” said Ganpat Daspute, an innovative and progressive teacher from Shevgaon.

FIR filed against IIPM founder Arindam Chaudhuri by UGC for ‘fooling’ students

Delhi Police have registered an FIR against Arindam Chaudhuri, founder of Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), on the basis of a complaint by the University Grants Commission of “misleading, cheating and fooling” its students as its courses were not recognised by any recognised authority.

“We have registered an FIR under Section 420 of IPC against IIPM Dean Arindam Choudhari and his father Malayendra Kisor Chaudhuri, who is a Director, based on the UGC complaint. We are probing the matter,” Joint CP (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said.

The Supreme Court today dismissed the plea of a bank employee who had challenged framing of charges against him for publishing an alleged “vulgar and obscene” poem on Mahatma Gandhi in 1994 in an in-house magazine of which he was an editor.

A bench comprising justices Dipak Misra and Prafulla C Pant said one cannot be allowed to use indecent language for “historically respected personalities like Mahatma Gandhi”.

First Woman to Contest Aligarh Muslim University Polls found dead

Four years ago, Asma Javed made headlines when she became the first woman to run the student’s union at the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University, defying convention. The 28-year-old was found dead in her apartment under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday.

According to the police, Asma Javed (28) is suspected to have died a couple of days ago but her body was recovered on Wednesday.

“We lost touch with her on May 9. I reached here on May 12 to trace her and today her body was found in her apartment. It is clearly case of murder,” her brother Salman said.

Kabul attack: PM Modi phones Afghan Prez to express condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called Afghanistan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to express his condolences over the recent attack at a guesthouse in Kabul, wherein five people, including a U.S. citizen and two Indian nationals, were killed.

The Prime Minister took to Twitter to share his thoughts.

Supreme Court upholds Noida land acquisition order

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld an earlier order by the Allahabad High Court on land acquisition in Greater Noida Extension, wherein 10 percent of the developed land will be given to farmers.

“The honourable Supreme Court today decided that the judgement given by the Allahabad High Court is the correct one and has been upheld. Allahabad High Court had said the land acquisition will not be quashed,” advocate Surat Singh told ANI here.

The recent advertisement garnered negative response due to visuals showing Ranveer taking a dive into an ocean to save a girl from a shark and beating up a shark to portray his masculinity.

Cannabis pills falls short in curing Dementia’s behavioral symptoms

Medical marijuana pills may not be able to treat behavioral symptoms of dementia, such as aggression, pacing and wandering, claims a new study.

Study author Geke A.H. van den Elsen, MD, at Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands said that the results of the study, which was the largest ever so far for the behavioral symptoms analyses, were valuable since any firm evidence of the effectiveness and safety of medical marijuana in the disease area was scarce.

However, researchers did find that the drug dosage used in the clinical trial was safe and well-tolerated.

Free Mobile service training by Minority Welfare Department in Hyderabad

The Minorities Welfare Department in association with Bankers Institute of Rural and Entrepreneurship Development (Rajendranagar) is conducting training programme in “Mobile servicing’ for minority community youths in the age group of 18 to 30 years from Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts.

Rahul Gandhi condemns Kabul guesthouse attack

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday condemned the suspected Taliban attack on a guesthouse in Afganistan’s capital Kabul that killed 14 people, including four Indians.

“Extremely saddened to hear that several people, including Indian citizens, lost their lives in the attack in Kabul,” said Rahul Gandhi in a statement.

“I strongly condemn the brutal terrorist attack in Karachi. Innocent lives have been lost in a senseless act of violence,” the Congress vice-president said.

Modi calls up Afghan president after Kabul attack

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani following an attack on a Kabul guesthouse in which four Indians among 14 people were killed.

“Spoke to President @ashrafghani & offered condolences on loss of lives due to the Kabul attack. We are one when it comes to fighting terror,” the prime minister, who is visiting China, tweeted.

“President @ashrafghani expressed sadness on the unfortunate demise of Indian citizens in the attack in Kabul,” the prime minister said.

2 Indians among 5 foreigners killed in Kabul guesthouse siege

At least two Indians are among five foreigners killed in an attack on a guesthouse during an hours-long siege that ended early this morning in Afghanistan capital here.

Though the exact number of Indians killed in the siege was not known, Indian ambassador in Kabul Amar Sinha said there are “a few Indian casualties among others” in the Kabul attack.

“Unfortunately a few Indian casualties among others at the Kabul g/house attack today,” Sinha tweeted.
