NASA certifies SpaceX to launch big-ticket science probes

NASA has formally certified US-based Space Exploration Technologies Corporation’s (SpaceX) Falcon 9 rocket to launch the most ambitious science missions.

The Falcon 9 is now certified by NASA as a “Category 2” launch vehicle. SpaceX has successfully launched six re-supply missions to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the NASA contract.

NASA and SpaceX began pursuing the certification of the Falcon 9 in 2012. SpaceX won an $82 million contract to launch the Jason 3 mission — a project jointly funded by the US and France to measure sea roughness.

Sensex gains 117 points, oil and gas stocks surge

A benchmark index of the Indian equities markets, the 30-scrip BSE Sensitive Index (Sensex), was trading 117.52 points or 0.43 percent up during the afternoon session on Monday.

The wider 50-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also was trading 40.90 points or 0.50 percent up at 8,303.25 points.

The Sensex of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 27,416.97 points, was trading at 27,441.52 points (at 1.20 p.m.) — up 117.52 points or 0.43 percent from the previous day’s close at 27,324 points.

Aspirin may slow progression of breath shortness: Study

Regular use of the common painkiller aspirin may help slow the progression of early emphysema, a lung disease that primarily causes shortness of breath, says a new study.

“Other than smoking cessation and avoidance, there are no known methods for reducing the risk of developing emphysema,” said researcher Carrie Aaron from Columbia University Medical Centre in New York, US.

First tribal woman takes oath as Jharkhand governor

Draupadi Murmu on Monday took oath as the ninth governor of Jharkhand, the first tribal woman to occupy the position in the state.

She was administered the oath of office at Raj Bhawan by Jharkhand High Court Chief Justice Virendra Singh. She succeeded Syed Ahmad, who has been shifted to Manipur.

Afghan soldier gets Indian hands in transplant in Kochi hospital

A 30-year-old former Afghan military captain from Kandahar, who lost his hands while defusing mines in the war torn country, now has two Indian hands by a successful transplant carried out at an institute in Kochi.

3-year-old brother shoots 1-year-old sister in USA

A 3-year-old boy shot his 1-year-old sister in the face as the two were in a car in the parking lot of a daycare in USA.

According news release said the shooting happened in the parking lot at 4:30 Friday afternoon in Venice, a small city south of Sarasota on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Officials say the children were alone in the car while their mother was talking to people in the parking lot. A report said the boy picked up a handgun in the car and fired it, striking his sister. Only one shot was fired. It was no known from where the boy got the gun, officer added.

Gold recovers as demand hardens, silver retraces Rs 40k-level

Gold prices recovered smartly at the domestic bullion market here today on fresh buying by jewellery stockists and retailers amid ongoing seasonal demand on the back of firm global cues.

Silver shot up and retraced the Rs 40,180 per kg level after 3-1/2 mths on heavy speculative buying, coupled with sustained industrial offtake.

Silver had last touched Rs 40k-level and ended at Rs 40,040 as on January 28, 2015.

Standard gold (99.5 purity) climbed Rs 155 to close at Rs 27,445 per 10 grams from Friday’s closing level of Rs 27,290.
