Cancer tumour of boy, 7, removed at Gurgaon hospital

A seven-year-old boy from West Bengal, Dildar Sheikh, who developed a major cancerous tumour on his lower back, successfully underwent a surgery at a city hospital, doctors said on Sunday.

Son of a rickshaw puller, Dildar started facing problems after a small lump on his lower back went undiagnosed for seven months. The lump later developed into a major cancerous tumour, making it difficult for the boy to walk.

Mumbai chief fire officer succumbs to May 9 burns

Sunil Nesarikar, the chief fire officer of the Mumbai Fire Brigade, who sustained severe burn injuries while battling a building blaze on May 9, died here on Sunday, officials said.

Nesarikar was admitted to the National Burns Centre in Navi Mumbai with over 50 percent burns and was under treatment since the past fortnight.

He failed to recover from his injuries, and died on Sunday afternoon.

With Nesarikar’s death, the toll in the blaze in the 50-year-old Gokul Niwas building in south Mumbai’s congested Kalbadevi area, climbed to four – all fire officers.

100 smart cities project will be launched any day: Naidu

Contours have been worked out for the 100 smart cities project and the flagship programme will be launched any day, Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said here today.

“Making urban areas more livable, by new initiatives, to make them engines of economic growth. Like building smart cities, 100 smart cities. The plans are ready, contours have been worked out. Cabinet has approved?it.

“Consultation with all stakeholders is over. Any day, it will be launched. We are waiting for the launching day,” he told PTI here.

Modi government for development of all: Naqvi

The BJP-led NDA government has been “working with the agenda of development of all without any discrimination”, Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said here on Sunday.

Addressing a media workshop of the BJP here in the Madhya Pradesh capital, Naqvi said “the government has closed down the shops of middlemen and power brokers”.

The “champions of corruption” have formed a nexus against the Narendra Modi government which had managed to push them into a state of “nervousness”, he said.

Blocked river in Nepal raises fear of flood in UP

The fear of floods in parts of Uttar Pradesh has emerged with Nepali authorities warning about chances of the bursting of an artificial lake, created after the Kali Gandaki river got blocked by a massive landslide early on Sunday.

Nepali authorities opened the gates of Gandak Barrage, located on the Nepal-India border, on Sunday after the Kali Gandaki was blocked in the western Nepali Myagdi district.

Known as Kali Gandaki or Gandaki in the hilly region, Narayani in the southern plain and Gandak in India, it is a left bank tributary of the Ganges.

Modi government allergic to Kejriwal: Sisodia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is “allergic” to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Sunday.

Sisodia told NDTV in an interview, a day before the AAP government completes 100 days in office, that the central government was trying to bulldoze the agenda of the Delhi government.

“The centre wants to run Delhi. They want to bulldoze our agenda, we will not allow this,” he said. “The centre is allergic to Kejriwal.”

Doctor suspended for medical negligence

A doctor at the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has been suspended for alleged negligence which led to the death of a patient.

“The principal of the Government medical college Jammu has suspended Medicine Registrar Dr Sushil Pandita for negligence which led to the death of a patient,” an official said.

However, the resident doctors association GMC Jammu and associated hospitals have alleged that the suspension was at the behest of ‘higher ups’ to shield the real culprits.

Pak should help tackle terror: Rajnath

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today asked Pakistan to extend all help in tackling terrorism as it was also a victim of the menance.

“It (Pakistan) should extend full cooperation in checking terrorism because the country is facing a similar problem today,” Singh told reporters.

Pakistan executes four convicts

The Pakistani authorities on Saturday executed four convicts in jails across Punjab province.

Ehsaan was executed at Lahore Central Jail. He was sentenced to death in 2002 for committing a murder, Dawn online reported.

Mohammad Saleem was hanged in Faisalabad Central Jail. He was sentenced to death in 2004 for murdering his cousin.

Abdul Ghaffar was executed in Multan Central Jail for killing three individuals — including his wife — in 1990.

Wazir was hanged in Sahiwal Central Jail for committing a murder in 1991 over a domestic dispute.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Saturday the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is hopeful of winning the Bihar assembly election later this year and termed as “impractical” the Rashtriya Janata Dal-Janata Dal-United coalition.

Bollywood actors Raveena Tandon and Vivek Oberoi inaugurated the program at the Police Club of the Azad Maidan police station on Friday.

Devendra Fadnavis’s wife Amruta meets with a road accident

The wife of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, Amruta Fadnavis, was involved in a minor road accident in Mumbai.

“Yesterday (Friday), while I was returning from office, a lorry dashed on to my car. I am fine, but there is a dent in the car,” Amruta said.

Amruta is a senior executive with a private sector bank here. The CM is in Kolhapur attending the state BJP executive meeting.

An Indian-American home- schooled boy has surprised one and all by graduating from a US college at the age of 11 with three associate degrees in maths, science and foreign language studies.

Tanishq Abraham, a native of Sacramento, California, graduated from American River College in Sacramento (ARC), California, alongside 1,800 students. The year-old Narendra Modi-led government says its schemes won’t leave any sector untouched as it flicks aside a Congress charge that it was repackaging the UPA dispensation’s programmes.

With banking schemes like Jan Dhan Yojana, mass movement programmes like Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, and social movements like Beti Bachao, the government says no sector has been left untouched in its commitment for inclusive development.

SAI trainee athletes discharged from hospital

Three trainee athletes at the Water Sports Centre of SAI, undergoing treatment at the Medical College Hospital in Alappuzha after they consumed a poisonous fruit in a suicide pact earlier this month, have been discharged from hospital.

During a brief interaction with media , the girls maintained that they took the extreme step due to “harassment and ragging by seniors”. They said though they had brought the matter to the notice of authorities, no action was taken.

Pakistan High Commission has rejected the visa of 150 Sikh pilgrims visiting Pakistan to commemorate the martyrdom day of 5th Sikh Guru Arjan Dev.

The visa was rejected after differences over the date of observing the martyrdom day, with SGPC officials wanting the visa for Sikh pilgrims for today (May 22), while Pakistan said it would grant visa for June 16 when Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee observes the anniversary.
