Uber threatens to sack drivers attending China taxi protests

Uber has reportedly warned its drivers against participating in taxi protests in the city of Hangzhou in east China or risk having their contracts cancelled.

The taxi-hailing service, in a message sent to its drivers, said that it will use GPS coordinates to check if the drivers are attending the protests, staged by taxi drivers against the rise of illegal competition in China, reported The Verge.

Uber said that the harsh stance was aimed at maintaining social order.

Emphasising that yoga does not discriminate, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said he discovered the “simple sense of satisfaction” it brings when he tried his first “asana” during his visit to India.

In his message for the first International Day of Yoga to be observed on June 21, Ban recalled that it took him a while to gain his balance when he tried yoga for the first time in New Delhi during his visit in January but soon realised it can be done by anyone.

Adding to the benefits of avocados, scientists have found that the nutritious fruit may hold the key to beating deadly leukemia.

University of Waterloo Professor Paul Spagnuolo has discovered a lipid in avocados that combats acute myeloid leukemia (AML) by targeting the root of the disease – leukemia stem cells. Worldwide, there are few drug treatments available to patients that target leukemia stem cells.

AML is a devastating disease and proves fatal within five years for 90 per cent of seniors over age 65.

‘Polluted air’ can reduce white matter in our brains

In a new study, scientist have claimed that air pollution could cut down the white matter in our brains.

For the study, a research team took brain MRIs of 1403 women who were 71 to 89 years old and used residential histories and air monitoring data to estimate their exposure to air pollution in the previous 6 to 7 years.

Older women who lived in places with higher air pollution had significantly reduced white matter in the brain.

The findings suggest that ambient particulate air pollutants may have a deleterious effect on brain aging.

Thousands evacuated as ‘volatile’ Mt Sinabung volcano erupts in Indonesia

At least 3,000 people living close to a volcano in Indonesia were forced to evacuate after it started erupting violently.

Mount Sinabung, located on the island of Sumatra, became active again in 2010 but a sharp increase in activity has been noticed since June 2. Hot ashes and gas gushed down the side of the mountain at high speed at least 28 times on Monday, reported the BBC.

Before 2010, the volcano had been dormant for more than 400 years.

Scientists have expressed concern that the volcano could pose more dangers in the coming weeks.

Croatia to face disciplinary action over swastika symbol

European football’s governing body (UEFA) has begun disciplinary action proceedings against the Croatian Football Federation after a swastika symbol was marked on the ground before their match against Italy in Euro CUP 2016 qualifiers.

UEFA said it was acting after incidents of ‘racist behaviour’ at Friday’s match, the BBC reported.

The swastika, which is widely recognised as the symbol of Nazi Germany, was seen during the first half of the match and the ground staff was not successful in covering it up.

A new research by SmartRecruiters analysed data from over 270,000 job postings and found that Tuesday was the most popular day to apply for companies to post job listings, reported Business Insider.

The study showed that nearly 58 percent of all jobs being posted Monday through Wednesday, and Tuesday being the day with the most action.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday began his 10-kilometre ‘padyatra’ (foot march) in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir-Champa district to reach out to farmers and tribals affected by land acquisition for various projects.

He kicked off his foot march from Saradih village at around 9.45 AM along with a large number of party workers and senior leaders in the last leg of his two-day visit to the state.

The padyatra will pass through 10-12 villages and will conclude at Dabhra where the Congress leader will address a public rally this afternoon.

Petrol prices hiked, Diesel prices lowered

The price of petrol has been hiked across the country by 64 paise per litre, while the price of diesel has been lowered by Rs 1.35 per litre.

A statement by the Indian Oil Corporation stated that the cost of petrol was increased in lieu of the increase in crude prices in the international market, while the cost of diesel has been decreased due to the downward revision in the price of the fuel.

With this latest revision, the price of petrol will be Rs 66.93 a litre in Delhi, while diesel will cost Rs 50.93 per litre.

India to Test Reusable Launch Vehicle Next Month

In a technology that can bring down costs significantly of launching satellites, India will test reusable launch vehicle next month, the government today said.

The Indian Space Research (ISRO) will also launch Astrosat, India’s first dedicated satellite for astronomy by September this year.

“This is in its initial stages. There are multiple experiments which need to be completed. The first launch is in July and this will help improve cost effectiveness. It will reduce the cost by one-tenth.”

Nestle Values Maggi Stocks at Rs. 320 Crore

Nestle India today said stocks of Maggi noodles worth Rs. 210 crore were being withdrawn from the market and destroyed even as another Rs. 110 crore worth of finished and related material stocks remained at its factories and distribution centres.

“These are broad estimates because it is impossible to calculate the final figure while the withdrawal is taking place,” the company said in a filing with stock exchanges.
