Militant nabbed after entering India from Nepal

The police have arrested a militant, who had crossed over into the country from Nepal, along with his family members.

Identified as Abdul Gani, he had crossed over to Pakistan 15 years ago and was undergoing training with different militant organisations, the police said.

He had joined Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit in 2004, followed by Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) in 2009. He was allegedly involved in many militant operations with both the organisations.

The research indicated that for each 5 percent increase of a person’s total energy intake provided by sweet drinks including soft drinks, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes may increase by 18 percent.

However, the study also estimates that replacing the daily consumption of one serving of a sugary drink with either water or unsweetened tea or coffee can lower the risk of developing diabetes by between 14percent and 25 percent.

Tata Steel workers begin action ahead of planned strike in UK

Tata Steel workers in the UK have begun the work-to-rule action ahead of a planned strike next week over the company’s proposed changes to the British Steel Pension Scheme.

Members of four trade unions are also refusing to work overtime before the 24-hour complete strike action on June 22.

Unite, Community, GMB and Ucatt trade unions had voted in favour of a strike recently, marking the largest industrial action in the UK steel industry for over 30 years.

Four aftershocks in two hours jolt Nepal

Four moderate aftershocks, measuring between 4 and 5.2 on the Richter scale, have reportedly jolted Nepal, taking the total number of aftershocks recorded in the country after last month’s massive earthquake to 320.

According to media reports, the first aftershock was recorded at 5.58 am, with the epicentre at Ramkot, seven kilometers west of the capital Kathmandu.

It was followed by a 5.2-magnitude tremor with epicentre at the Sindhupalchowk district. Another aftershock of magnitude 4 originated in the same area some time later.

In open letter, Taliban urges IS to ‘keep its nose out of Afghanistan’

The Afghan Taliban, in an open letter to the Islamic State (IS), has urged its self-styled caliph, Abu Bakar Al Baghdadi, to keep his ultra-extremist group out of Afghanistan.

The letter, signed by the acting chief of the Taliban’s central council, Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansoor, said that there no need for launching a ‘parallel front’ while the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan already existed, reported The Express Tribune.

According to police Shiva Mahesh Kumar, a B Tech first year student of Abhinav Hi-tech College of Engineering in Moinabad in Himayath Sagar area was allegedly set on fire in front of the college.

A 42-year-old woman from suburban Bandra in South Mumbai who was caught driving drunk in Mumbai left police officials perplexed when she locked herself in the car.

According to police, when the woman asked to stop her car for taking a breath analyser test, she initially tried to escape but later stopped her vehicle at a distance.

India-Russia trade target of $30 billion is achievable, says CII

Utah scientists announced a proposed expansion for their cosmic ray observatory, to speed up studies of on a ” hotspot,” a mysterious source of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays.

Physicists plan a 6.4 million dollars expansion of the 25 million dollars Telescope Array observatory in Utah. Japan will contribute 4.6 million dollars and University of Utah scientists will seek another 1.8 million dollars to nearly quadruple the size of the existing 300-square-mile cosmic ray observatory in the desert west of Delta, Utah.

Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro has revealed that he will be undergoing surgery for the third time on his injured left wrist.

Del Potro, who was the 2009 US Open champion, has been struggling with problems related to his wrist for the last three years, and has also dropped down to 578 in world rankings.

The Argentine consulted his doctor Richard Berger and decided to undergo surgery after trying all other options to rid him of the problem.

NASA’s Cassini makes final approach to fly-by Saturn’s moon Dione on June 16

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft will cruise very close to of Saturn’s moon Dione on June 16.

Spacecraft would be coming within 321 miles of the moon’s surface. It will fly past Dione one more time, on Aug. 17, swooping within 295 miles of the surface.

During the flyby, Cassini’s cameras and spectrometers will observe terrain that includes “Eurotas Chasmata,” a region first observed 35 years ago by NASA’s Voyager mission as bright, wispy streaks.

Finnish mother gets life sentence for killing five newborns

A court Finland on Monday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing her five infants.

The woman gave birth to the babies in her residences between 2005 and 2013. But after birth she left the babies without care and later deposited the corpses in refrigerators and basement, Xinhua reported.

The corpses were uncovered in June 2014, when outsiders complained about an unpleasant odour coming from the basement.

The woman told the Oulu court in northern Finland that she had thought the children were stillborn.

The Telangana government on Monday requested the external affairs ministry to take necessary steps to transport to Hyderabad the body of a student shot dead in the United States.

Sai Kiran, a student from Hyderabad pursuing his MS, was shot dead by unidentified people in Miami, Florida on Sunday. Chief Minister K.Chandrashekhar Rao expressed his condolences to the family members of the 22-year-old.

Biocon shares gain 3% as arm Syngene gets Sebi nod for IPO

Shares of biotechnology major Biocon gained 3% on Tuesday after its research arm Syngene International received capital markets regulator Sebi’s approval to launch an initial public offer (IPO).

Biocon stock climbed 2.93% to Rs 460 on the BSE. On the NSE, it was up 3% to Rs 460.

The company had filed its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) with Sebi through its lead merchant banker Axis Capital in April.

Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) issued its final observations on the draft offer documents on June 12, which is necessary for companies to launch any public offer.

Exports contract 20.19% in May, trade deficit shrinks

Continuing its declining trend, India’s exports shrank by about 20.19% in May to US $22.34 billion, marking a fall for the sixth straight month.

The slump in exports is mainly due to global slowdown, dip in crude oil prices and rupee appreciation.

In May 2014, the country’s merchandise exports stood at US $27.99 billion.

The last time exports registered a positive growth was in November last year when it expanded 7.27%.

The main exporting sectors, including petroleum products, gems and jewellery, engineering and chemicals reported a negative growth in April.

Petrol price hiked by 64 paise per litre, diesel price cut by Rs 1.35

Petrol prices have been hiked by 64 paise per litre while the price of diesel has been slashed by Rs 1.35 per litre.

This is the third hike in petrol prices in the past one month.

The revised price will be effective from midnight after which the price of petrol in Delhi will become Rs. 66.93 per litre while that of diesel will be Rs. 50.93 per litre.

Fuel prices were last revised on May 15, when petrol price was hiked by Rs 3.
