Former world champion Viswanathan Anand played out an easy draw as black against Hikaru Nakamura of United States and remained in joint third position after the end of the fifth round of Norway Chess 2015, a part of the Grand Chess Tour.

Following a victory against world champion Magnus Carlsen in the previous round and a much deserving rest day thereafter, Anand had his task cut out against Nakamura. The American had a small advantage but it remained just that as Anand played the defensive part to perfection.

FM Jaitley says “have partly restored credibility of Indian economy”

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said the credibility of Indian economy has been partly restored and the momentum must be sustained over the next two years to win over and provide comfort to world investors.

Michelle Obama played her part in marking Father’s Day by sharing a throwback pic of US Prseident Barack Obama where he’s shirtless on a beach playing with their two daughters, then toddlers.

The 51-year-old First Lady accompanied the image by writing “Thinking today and every day about the father of these two. Happy Father’s Day!”

The family was not together on the day as Michelle has taken their girls, Malia, 16, and Sasha, 14 on a Europe tour to promote her Let Girls Learn initiative.

Flood threat in AP, Telangana as Godavari overflows

Flood threat looms over parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as heavy rains continued to lash the two Telugu states for a third consecutive day on Monday. Only 0.35% domestic LPG users gave up subsidy

Three months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Give It Up’ campaign, only 0.35% of the domestic LPG consumers have so far given up using subsidised cooking gas.

At a review meeting chaired by Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan last week, it was informed that just over 5.5 lakh out of the 15.3 crore LPG consumers have so far voluntarily surrendered subsidised LPG and started buying the cooking fuel at the market price, a top official said.

Microsoft updates Bing’s video search

Microsoft has given a makeover to its Bing video search feature.

According to the Verge, new features include larger, easier-to-identify video thumbnails and the users can even preview videos straight from the results to get an idea of what they are looking at. For that, the users just have to move their cursor over a result to watch a small bit of the video.

In addition, Bing shows additional information on each result. Users can now see the view count, upload date and up-loader before clicking to the result.

Early tests of a prototype coating for fan blades, which mimics the intricate structure of an owl’s wing, have demonstrated that it could significantly reduce the amount of noise produced by wind turbines and other types of fan blades, such as those in computers or planes.

Murray better prepared for Wimbledon post winning fourth Queen’s Club tit

Britain number one Andy Murray believes he is in better position now than he was when he won the Wimbledon title in 2013.

Murray bagged a record-equalling fourth Queen’s Club title after crushing big-serving Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-3, 6-4 in Sunday’s final.

This was Murray’s third ATP title of 2015 after his victories on clay in Madrid and Munich.

Reflecting on his win, Murray said that he played better as the week went on, insisting that he had to come up with some great shots to win the game, Sport24 reported.

Taliban advancing on capital of northern Afghan province of Kunduz

Taliban militants have captured a key adjoining district as they advance on Kunduz, the capital of a northern Afghan province, said officials.

According to Dawn News, the Taliban advance has sparked fear among residents that the city may fall under the hands of the militants.

The Taliban launched their annual summer offensive in late April with a brazen assault in Kunduz province.

Chardarah district has fallen to Taliban after hours of fierce fighting wherein 12 soldiers lost their lives and17 have been injured, said Chardarah district chief Mohammad Yousuf Ayubi.

Illicit liquor factory unearthed in UP, 10 arrested

An illicit liquor factory was unearthed in Bakhira area here following which 10 persons have been arrested, police said today.

Acting on a tip off police raided a rice mill in Lagraber village last evening and unearthed the illicit liquor racket. 10 persons were arrested during the raid, Additional Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar told reporters.

Two militants, civilian killed

Two militants and a civilian were killed while two Army jawans were injured in an overnight encounter in Kulgam district of Kashmir, police said today.

The death of the civilian triggered clashes between locals and security forces in the area.

A senior police officer said that both the militants have been killed in the encounter and their bodies recovered.

He said the identity and group affiliation of the slain militants was being ascertained.

However, sources identified the deceased as Javed Ahmad Kachroo and Idrees Nengroo, both affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen.

Girl engrossed in texting gets leg wedged in storm drain

A teenage girl, who tripped on road and got her entire leg wedged in a storm drain while texting, has become the best example of why is it hazardous to text while walking. The girl, who has not been named, was focused on her mobile phone walking down the street in Mianyang City, in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, the Mirror has reported.

Although passers-by stopped to help, she was completely stuck until someone called the fire brigade. They eventually freed her after a 45-minute wait. The unnamed girl admitted she was walking and texting a friend when the incident happened.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday launched mobile application ‘police app’ enabling citizens in the state capital region with the facility to lodge complaint or report about any crime through their cell phones.

On the occasion, Naidu said the ‘police app’ will boost confidence of citizens across the capital region of Vijaywada and will also bridge the gap between police and the public.

Users can directly file complaint through the app and it can be also very useful while they are away from any nearby police station, Naidu said.

Nifty reclaims 8,300; Sensex up 278 points

The benchmark BSE index extended its gains by 278 points, while Nifty reclaimed 8,300 mark in morning trade supported by all-round buying led by realty, banking and FMCG stocks amid steady progress in monsoon.

The Sensex resumed higher at 27,427.19 and a touched high of 27,601.06 before quoting at 27,594.37 at 1045 hrs, a rise of 278.20 points or 1.02%.

The 50-share Nifty also gained by 91.00 points 1.11% to 8,315.95 at 1045 hrs.

Soon IIT-Kharagpur to Produce Doctors

Going beyond engineering, IIT Kharagpur would soon start offering MBBS courses as well. On a three-acre plot on the edge of the campus, the 400-bedded super-speciality hospital, Dr B C Roy Institute of Medical Science & Research, would be ready by the end of 2017.

“The government has already sanctioned a grant of Rs. 230 crore last year for this purpose. Construction work will start soon and is expected to be completed within 26 months,” IIT-Kgp director Partha Pratim Chakrabarti told PTI.

Apple has announced it will pay labels for rights to stream their music, just a day after pop star Taylor Swift slammed the company for its three-month free trial.

In a tweet, senior vice president of internet services and software Eddy Cue wrote that Apple would pay artists during the 90-day period.

Calling the trial “shocking, disappointing and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company,” Swift, 25, had written in an open letter she would not release her latest album “1989” on Apple Music streaming service.

Indiabulls Real Estate seeks shareholders approval to raise Rs 540 crore

Indiabulls Real Estate will seek shareholders’ nod to raise a total of Rs 538 crore from promoters, including convertible warrants worth Rs 290 crore.

The company’s board, during its meeting held yesterday, approved 3.67 crore equity shares and 4.36 crore convertible warrants, Indiabulls Real Estate said in a regulatory filing today.

The move is part of effort for augmenting “the long-term resources of the company for meeting funding requirements for its business purposes,” and also reflects the confidence that the promoters have, it added.

Only 10 days left to exchange your pre-2005 currency notes

Only 10 days are left to exchange pre-2005 currency notes, including those of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations, at banks as the deadline to do so is ending on June 30.

Seeking cooperation for withdrawing pre-2005 currency notes from circulation, the RBI has asked the public to deposit the old design notes in their bank accounts or exchange them at a bank branch convenient to them.

The earlier deadline was January 1, but later the Reserve Bank of India had extended it till the end of this month.

India slips to 61st place on Swiss money list; Pakistan at 73rd

India has moved down to 61st place in terms of foreigners’ money in Swiss banks and it now accounts for a meagre 0.123% of the total global wealth worth US $1.6 trillion in Switzerland’s banking system.

While the UK and the US have retained their top two positions with the largest shares of the foreign clients’ money with Swiss banks, Pakistan has inched up to 73rd place.

Interestingly, just two big banks — UBS and Credit Suisse — account for nearly two-third of the total money kept by foreigners in Swiss banks, while their share in case of Indians is even higher at about 82%.
