US Muslims turn to Jews for Ramadan prayers

Dubai, August 26: A booming Muslim population in the United States is creating a shortage of mosques and prayer space, forcing the faithful to get creative during the holy month of Ramadan as Muslims in Virginia rent out Jewish synagogues.

In Reston, Virginia, a synagogue has opened its doors to Muslim worshipers to perform daily prayers during Ramadan, according to the Washington Post. The extra space is crucial to accommodate the additional worshippers expected.

Ramadan starts Saturday for most Arabs

Dubai, August 21: Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, will start the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan on Saturday along with most other GCC and Arab countries.

Senior religious councils in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen, Algeria and Iraq said the moon’s crescent was not sighted after nightfall on Thursday, and so Friday would be the 30th day of Shaaban, the month preceding Ramadan.

Unemployment claims worsen, rise 15,000

Washington, August 20: The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits unexpectedly rose last week, a government report showed on Thursday, as companies continued to cut payrolls amid uncertainty over the economic outlook.

Initial claims for state unemployment insurance benefits rose 15,000 to a seasonally adjusted 576,000 in the week ended August 15 from 561,000 the prior week, the Labor Department said.

Overstaying Bangladeshi lover held

Hyderabad, August 20: The Nizamabad police detained a Bangladeshi national, Ms Faroon Begum, 25, at Ansanpally village of Dharpally mandal on Tuesday. She had come here to meet her lover Mr Ravi, 26, of Ansanpally village. The police took her into custody for overstaying and is trying to deport her to Bangladesh.

According to sources, Ms Faroon, a native of Sabargaon near Dhaka in Bangladesh and Mr Ravi became close in 2008 at Dubai. The duo worked as non-teaching staff in a school there.

Six farmers commit suicide in a day, VJAS urges PM to visit Vidarbha

Bhopal, August 20 (Pervez Bari): The condition of drought in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra state is getting worse day by day as six more farmers committed suicides allegedly due to crop failure and acute distress following huge debt .

According to Nagpur-based Kishor Tiwari, president of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti, (VJAS), in this month of August more than 36 farmers in drought prone Vidarbha region have committed suicides. It is a matter of concern that now reports from new areas of paddy growing cases of farm suicides have started to come, he added.

DNA evidence can be faked and planted at crime scenes, researchers find

Washington, August 19: Until now, DNA was considered the “gold standard” of criminal investigations: Hundreds of wrongly convicted individuals have been freed around the world after DNA analysis proved them innocent of their crimes; and many of the guilty have been brought to justice through DNA evidence as well.

But the days of DNA’s supremacy in the courtroom could soon come to an end, as researchers in Israel say it can be faked and planted at crime scenes, using basic DNA analysis techniques.

India hub of child trafficking in South Asia

New Delhi, August 19: Nearly 150,000 women and children are trafficked from South Asia every year, “most of them from, via and to India”, says a new report that also underlines how the economic meltdown has heightened the risk of child sexual exploitation.

India is the main destination of “alarming flows” of crossborder trafficking in South Asia, says the study by global child rights group ECPAT International, supported by the Body Shop International.

“In India, the majority of trafficking in underage girls for sexual exploitation happens within the country,” it says.

Study: 90 percent of US currency is drug money — literally

Washington, August 18: That’s the conclusion, more or less, of a study that found 90 percent of the paper currency in circulation in the United States carries trace quantities of cocaine.

What’s more, this represents a more than 20 percentage point increase over a similar study carried out two years ago, researchers point out, when 67 percent of US bills were found to have traces of cocaine.

Ishrat was not a terrorist, justice will prevail, vows family

Mumbai, August 15: “My sister is not a terrorist. The Gujarat police killed her in a fake encounter,” said Mussarat Jahan, Ishrat Jahan’s sister reacting to the Gujarat High Court order on Thursday, directing a probe into the alleged fake encounter in June 2004.

Workshop on Emergency & Trauma Airway Management at AMU concludes

Powerful anti-cancer agent discovered

Washington, August 14: A new study conducted on mice has uncovered a chemical compound that effectively targets cancer stem cells — the key cells that spread malignant tumors and are usually resistant to treatment.

In a study published in Thursday’s edition of the journal Cell, a group of medical researchers said they had discovered that a compound called salinomycin directly targeted cancer stem cells.
