A new study has revealed that beetroot is beneficial for athletes and may help in boosting their performance.

The study found that the nitrate found in beetroot concentrate increases blood flow to skeletal muscles during exercise.

In addition to improving athletic performance, the research also found that beetroot juice can improve the quality of life for heart failure patients.

Air quality deteriorates alarmingly in Delhi post-Diwali

Air quality in the national capital deteriorated alarmingly a day after Diwali as pollution levels spiked more than five times higher than normal leaving many at the risk of respiratory problems.

The Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM), which directly affects breathing, has gone up by five times from the national ambiance air quality standard, stated scientists from System of Air quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).

FMC takes fresh measures to boost liquidity in commodity market

Amid sharp decline in turnover of the commodity exchanges, regulator FMC has come out with a revised policy to allow traders to take higher position in commodities traded on the exchanges in order to improve depth and liquidity in the market.

To promote transparency and prevent price manipulation in the market, the Forward Markets Commission (FMC) has also directed bourses to disclose open position limits of top 10 trading clients including hedgers on their website.

2 chopped onions

1/2 tsp salt or to taste

1 Tbsp chopped ginger

4 chopped green chillies

75 gm cheese

2 Tbsp coriander seeds and black pepper powder

1 1/2 Tbsp red chilli flakes

1/2 cup roasted besan

100 gm paneer

2 Tbsp corn flour

Oil for frying

Method

Lay a muslin cloth over a bowl and pour the yoghurt into it. Pick up the edges of the cloth and tie a knot. Hang it till it turns into a cheesy mixture.

Leopard Dies After Being Hit by Vehicle in Katarniaghat

A leopard was killed after being hit by some unidentified vehicle on Nanpara-Lakhimpur road in Katarniaghat wildlife division.

The leopard, said to be around four-year-old, was killed on Wednesday night when it was hit by some vehicle in Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary area, forest officials said.

Project officer of WWF, Dabeer Hasan said a panel of doctors would conduct the post-mortem on Friday to ascertain cause of death.

He said as per 2005 counting, there are 32 leopards in the Sanctuary.

Liverpool football team boss Brendan Rodgers has provided striker Mario Balotelli to prove his worth or the manager would have to accept that his 16 million pounds gamble has not worked out and use the January transfer window to buy a more reliable goal-scorer.

More graves found near Mexico town of missing students

Six more clandestine graves containing human remains have been found near the Mexican town where 43 students went missing after an altercation with police a month ago, sources said.

The graves were discovered by members of a local self-defence organisation at a site called Monte Hored in Guerrero state, a lawyer for the group told Efe by telephone.

Five of the graves contain human remains and the sixth was empty “and you could see it was ready to be used”, attorney Manuel Vazquez said.

Facebook launches anonymous chat app

Facebook, the world’s biggest social media network, has launched a new app for mobile telephones that allows users to share interests with others anonymously.

The new app, dubbed “Rooms”, was unveiled Thursday and is an adapted version of internet “chat rooms” and operates independently of Facebook, so users do not need an account with the social media giant.

According to the company, users can create a “room” on a single topic using a pseudonym and share photos, videos and text with others who have the same interests.

India Asks UNSC to Enforce Resolutions on Countering Terrorism

India’s UN Ambassador Asoke Kumar Mukerji has asked the UN Security Council (UNSC) to enforce without exception its resolutions on countering terrorism in order to stave off “an ever-widening spiral of violence and destruction”.

“The Council must seriously and transparently take measures available to it under the Charter to require member states of implement its resolutions on countering terrorism without exception,” he said Thursday.

Delhi fire department gets 293 calls on Diwali, highest in past 5 years

The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received 293 calls — the highest in the past five years — on Diwali on Thursday, an official said on Friday.

“This is the highest figure in the past five years. On Diwali, from midnight till 7 a.m. Oct 24, we received 293 calls of fire incidents from across the city,” a fire official told IANS. “Of these, 55 incidents were related to fire caused by crackers.

But in most of the other cases, the reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained,” the officer added.

Pope wants death, life terms to be abolished

Pope Francis issued a call for all the countries to abolish capital punishment and also eliminate sentences for life imprisonment because “a lifetime in prison is a hidden death sentence”.

At a Vatican meeting Thursday with representatives from International Association of Criminal Law, the Pope said that he finds it hard to believe that countries should not have any measures other than capital punishment to defend their people.

“All Christians and people of goodwill are called to fight for the abolition of death penalty, be it legal or illegal,” the pontiff said.

PCB releases Saqlain from Ajmal duty

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have released former off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq after completion of a one-month contract but said that suspended off-spinner Saeed Ajmal will continue his remedial work on his bowling action.

A PCB press release said that the PCB will decide whether to hire Saqlain again after an evalution of Ajmal’s remodeled bowling action at a bio-tech laboratory in the United Kingdom by November 10.

“Following this evaluation the cricket committee will decide whether or not to accquire the services of Saqlain Mushtaq afresh,” the release said.

72 year old man sexually abuses mentally challenged minor girl

A mentally-challenged minor girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 72-year-old relative of hers who has been absconding after the matter came to light.

According to the FIR lodged by the girl’s mother on September 28, the accused allegedly sexually assaulted the girl and also threatened her against talking about the matter to anybody.

The officer-in-charge of Kamarda police station and the investigating officer in the case, Brahmananda Nayak, said that a case has been registered and the victim has been medically examined.

India’s first fish hospital to come up in Kolkata

The country’s first hospital to treat abnormalities and diseases in fish is set to come up in Kolkata by mid-2015, a senior scientist said.

Senior scientist T J Abraham, who is spearheading the project told PTI that the work has already started on the project.

He said that nearly 60-65 kinds of disease and abnormality were found in fishes in India and the one reason why West Bengal slipped from the number one position in fish production was due to the fact that 10-20 per cent of them died of diseases.

Ingredients

1. 1 medium carrot, thinly sliced
2. 5 radishes, trimmed and sliced
3. 4 Tbsp rice vinegar
4. 450 g thin-sliced boneless, chicken breasts
5. 1 Tbsp olive oil
6. 2 cloves garlic, minced
7. 1/2 tsp hot sauce
8. 1/2 c reduced-fat mayonnaise
9. 4 mini baguettes, split
10.1/4 c fresh mint leaves
11.1/4 c fresh cilantro leaves

Method:

1 Toss carrot and radishes with 2 Tbsp vinegar in bowl. Let stand, 15 minutes.

2 Combine chicken, oil, garlic and remaining vinegar in ziptop bag, massaging to coat. Let stand 15 minutes. Mix mayo and hot sauce in bowl.

Kiss jam cookies

Ingredients:

1. 1 c natural unblanched almonds (150 g)
2. 1/4 c granular sugar substitute
3. 1/4 tsp salt
4. 1/4 c sugar-free jam
5. 1 large egg white

Procedure:

1. Heat oven to 190 degree C. Line large baking sheet with parchment.
2. Combine almonds, sugar substitute, and salt in food processor. Process until finely ground. Add egg white and process until mixture forms a paste.
3. Transfer dough to lined baking sheet and shape into a 14.x 2.log about 1/2. high. With a moistened thumb, make a 1/4.-deep trench down the length of log.
