The ‘resveratrol’ compound is found in red wine, dark chocolate and berries.

People who consume a diet rich in resveratrol live no longer and are just as likely to develop cardiovascular disease or cancer as those who eat or drink smaller amounts of the antioxidant, researchers claimed.

Jaguar Land Rover global sales up 30% in April

Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Monday reported 30 percent increase in global sales for April at 37,171 units.

The company’s sales were up 72 percent in the China region, 19 percent in North America, 25 percent in Asia Pacific and 27 percent in Europe, JLR said in a statement.

“April sales continue the positive momentum we saw in the first quarter of 2014. Alongside the F-Type, all three Range Rover models delivered record April sales performances reflecting the global appeal of our strongest ever vehicle line up,” JLR Group Sales Operations Director Andy Goss said.

RBI bought $7.78 bn in spot forex market in March

The Reserve Bank of India was a net buyer of dollars worth USD 7.78 billion in the spot forex market in March.

As per the data of Monthly Bulletin for May 2014, the central bank purchased USD 8.75 billion in March while it sold USD 970 million during the month.

However, in February, RBI had sold a net USD 530 million in the spot forex market.

For the entire 2013-14, there were net buys of USD 8.99 billion, showed the data.

RBI sells and purchases dollar in the market to check currency volatility.

Indian Hotels to open new Taj in Dubai this year

Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) will open its new Taj hotel here in the fourth quarter of this year.

Taj Dubai is located in the Burj Khalifa downtown area and surrounded by architectural landmarks like the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and Business Bay.

The hotel will comprise 296 guest-rooms, including the Taj Club rooms, 20 junior and 14 luxury suites, a statement released here said.

The two theme suites – The Tata Suite and The Maharaja Suite – occupying the top floors will comprise private dining, living areas and views overlooking the downtown area.

Taxi driver held for trying to molest American tourist

A taxi driver has been arrested for allegedly trying to molest an American tourist on the Delhi-Dehradun National Highway, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Sunday night when the victim was on way to Rishikesh from Delhi in a taxi, SP (city) Sharvan Kumar said.

The taxi driver stopped the car near a roadside eatery and tried to molest her. The woman managed to flee from the spot and reached Rishikesh by another vehicle.

Based on her complaint, an FIR was lodged and a case registered against taxi driver Samey Singh who has been arrested, he said.PTI

Diesel price hiked after polling ends

After a brief hiatus, diesel prices were today hiked by Rs 1.09 a litre, excluding state levies. The monthly increases in diesel rates, which had been put on hold just before India began voting to elect a new government, were back no sooner than polling ended today.

The hikes, effective from midnight tonight, are excluding state sales tax or VAT and actual increase will be higher and will vary from city to city, the oil companies announced.

Rupee up 45 paise against dollar in early trade

The rupee became stronger by 45 paise to 59.60 against the US dollar in early trade today at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market amidst exit polls forecasting the BJP-led NDA forming the government at the Centre.

Increased selling of the dollar by banks and exporters amid sustained foreign capital inflows also supported the rupee, dealers said.

Besides, strong rally in domestic equity market in opening trade also helped the rupee post gains but dollar’s strength against other currencies overseas limited the gains, they added.

Thousands of houses destroyed as cyclone hits Jalpaiguri in W.Bengal

Cyclone and heavy rainfall destroyed thousands of houses in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.

Most of the houses with thatched and tin roofs were blown away along with the strong winds on Sunday.

“Heavy rainstorm enveloped the area due to which 3500 houses were destroyed and Bhutan border check post has been completely destroyed after heavy rainfall,” said a resident, Muhammad Shami Ahmad.

The twin has separate brains and identical faces but share a body, describing their girls as ‘little Aussie fighters’, a report said Monday.

Sydney couple Renee Young and Simon Howie came to knowat a 19-week ultrasound that their babies would be born with a rare condition called diprosopus, Woman’s Day magazine reported.
“Even though there is only one body, we call them our twins,” Howie told the magazine. “To us, they are our girls and we love them.”

Low intensity earthquake hits Jamnagar

A low intensity earthquake hit areas near Lalpur taluka of Gujarat’s Jamnagar district on Monday morning, state disaster management officials said.

The epicentre of the earthquake, measured at 3.4 on Richter scale, was registered 16 kms north-east of Lalpur town, which is close to some of India’s largest petroleum refinery complexes.

The tremors were felt by locals at around 11.36 AM today, said the officials. Since it was a low intensity earthquake, no casualty or damage to property was caused by it, they said.PTI

Sexual relations between a legally wedded husband and wife, “even if forcible, is not rape”, a Delhi court said while acquitting a youth who was accused of marrying a 21-year-old girl after serving her a sedative-laced drink and raping her.

“It is evident that the prosecutrix (girl) had willingly and in full senses solemnised her marriage with the accused and the marriage was registered in the office of Registrar of Marriages, Ghaziabad, on March 4, 2013. The parties engaged in physical relations with each other after the marriage.

Full-year profit of ‘Nissan’ jumps 14.0% to $3.8 billion

On Monday, Japanese auto giant Nissan said that its full-year net profit jumped 14.0 percent, boosted by a weaker yen, cost-cutting efforts and brisk sales.

According to Japan’s second-biggest automaker which says that it earned 389.0 billion yen ($3.8 billion) for the fiscal year to March, after sales rose 20 percent on the previous year to 10.48 trillion yen.
