Ottawa, August 23: With many using popular online social networking sites to get fasting tips and exchange Ramadan diaries, modern technology is giving the holy fasting month of Ramadan a special taste.

“The spirit of Ramadan is the same,” Arij Elmi, a 21-year-old Canadian Muslim, told.

“But what has changed is that instead of looking at a calendar, I can look at my friends’ Facebook status to see what is coming.”

Elmi often uses Facebook, the world’s largest online social network, to get helpful recipes and tips for getting the most out of the daily fast during Ramadan.

Urban poor most vulnerable as climate changes: WB

New York, August 22: Climate change directly impacts food prices and wages in some developing countries, driving the urban poor deeper into poverty, a new study supported by the World Bank has said.

The Development Research Group at the World Bank and climate researchers from Purdue University in Indiana have concluded that the urban poor will be “hardest hit and they enter more rapidly into poverty as the climate changes throughout the century”.

Satellites put into orbit for Japan and Australia

Kourou, August 22: An Ariane-5 rocket put into orbit satellites for Japan and Australia after being launched from French Guiana on Friday, space officials said.

The rocket blasted off from the European Space Agency’s (ESA) launch center in Kourou, French Guiana on the northeast coast of South America.

One of the satellites, a JCSAT-12, will provide telecommunications services covering Japan, the Asia-Pacific region and Hawaii for Japan’s Sky Perfect JSAT Corp. It was built by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems.

Ericsson CEO clueless about fate of Nortel deal

Toronto, August 22: Swedish telecom major Ericsson, whose acquisition of Nortel’s wireless business here last month has been challenged by BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) and Canadian opposition parties, says it is still in the dark about the fate of the deal.
Ericsson was the highest bidder at $1.13 billion at last month’s court supervised auction of Nortel’s wireless division.

The 124-year-old Toronto-based Nortel, which has been operating under bankruptcy protection since January, is selling its businesses one by one to pay off debtors.

Malware is a software that can damage or compromise a computer system without the owner”s consent.

Natalie Connor, spokeswoman of the anti-virus company, said that even visiting any of the named websites could expose a computer to infection and put the personal information into the hands of unwanted people.

NDMC to use GIS-enabled map for better services

New Delhi, August 20: To ensure better delivery of services to the people, the civic authorities in the city will now use a GIS-enabled land map to gather information on public utilities on the click of a mouse.

The 3-D Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping of areas under the jurisdiction of New Delhi Municipal Council has been completed recently. The 3-D database was developed under Delhi State Spatial Data Infrastructure (DSSDI) project of the Delhi government while the NDMC is focusing on its municipal components.

Washington, August 19: Until now, DNA was considered the “gold standard” of criminal investigations: Hundreds of wrongly convicted individuals have been freed around the world after DNA analysis proved them innocent of their crimes; and many of the guilty have been brought to justice through DNA evidence as well.

But the days of DNA’s supremacy in the courtroom could soon come to an end, as researchers in Israel say it can be faked and planted at crime scenes, using basic DNA analysis techniques.

South Korea rocket set for lift-off

London, August 19: South Korea is preparing for its first space launch, which if successful will make it the latest nation to join the region’s space race and the 10th in the world to send its own communications satellite into orbit from its own soil.

The partly Russian-made Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1 (KSLV-1), or Naro-1, will blast off from the Naro Space Centre at Goheung on the nation’s southern coast on Wednesday, officials said.

The lift-off, which has been delayed several times since last year due to technical problems, is planned for 07:40 GMT.

Microsoft seeks stay on Word sale ban

New York, August 19: Microsoft Tuesday sought stay on a court injunction which bars it from selling its popular Word document creation software in the US for violating a patent belonging to a Canadian company.

Toronto-based i4i had dragged Microsoft to court in 2007 for using its patented technology in the software without its permission.

In its ruling last week, the US District Court in Tyler, Texas, banned Microsoft from selling Word 2003, Word 2007 and future versions of the software that use i4i’s technology without a licence.

Govt identifies 110 sites to develop hydro power projects

Srinagar, August 18: Jammu and Kashmir government has identified over hundred sites to develop small hydro power projects to meet the power demand in the state.

“As many as 110 project sites for development of hydro power have been identified by the Power Development Department,” an official spokesman said after a meeting.

The joint meeting of the officers of Science and Technology and Power Development departments, which was chaired by Minister for Science and Technology Aga Syed Ruhullah, discussed in detail 2MW and above capacity power projects.

VOIP used by 26/11 planners, 150 test calls made before attack

Mumbai, August 18: Pakistani conspirators were in constant touch with the 10 terrorists involved in the 26/11 attacks through telephone calls using VOIP service of an American company and also made several test calls prior to that, a US-based witness told a special court today.

“Before the 26/11 attacks, people from Pakistan had made several test calls to Mumbai to ensure the quality of sound,” the witness, the fourth US citizen to hint at Pakistani link in the case, said in a video conference from Canada.

Hackers indicted for stealing 130 mn credit card numbers

Washington, August 18:A Miami resident was charged with stealing 130 million credit and debit card numbers in what the Justice Department described Monday as the largest data breach ever in the United States.

Albert Gonzales, 28, and two unnamed computer hackers were indicted for using a sophisticated hacking technique called an “SQL injection attack” for stealing card information, through exploiting computer networks by finding a way around their firewall.

India completes design of Chandrayaan-2

Bangalore, August 17: India has completed the design of Chandrayaan-2, its next mission to the moon this time in collaboration with Russia — that would have a lander and rover which can collect samples of the lunar soil and analyse them and send back the data.

“Right now, the design has been completed. We had a joint review with Russian scientists here,” chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation, G Madhavan Nair, said.
